Totally a scam!! Avoid at all cost. They want you to book through their site and not use other apps…read moreso they offer 20%. When the offer on Hostelworld said if you wanted a room alone you had to book all 4 beds. They waited until we got there 2 days later to tell us we would all be split up in several rooms. This location is right in the heart of all the action, and every major spot to hit within the city is within walking distance or a quick tram ride away. I had never stayed in a hostel before, so I was a bit nervous based on stories from friends in other crowded cities. The check-in process was very easy. I booked through hostelworld and they just needed a passport to verify, then gave me the entrance key, house rules, and directions to my room. I stayed in a co-ed room with about 20 other people. Each bed was in bunk form with clean sheets and pillows with plenty of secure space to keep luggage underneath and an outlet to charge devices on the wall. The showers were clean and I felt like I had privacy while changing as well. The atmosphere at night was awesome. During my first night, I met four people each from a different area of the United States/England and we ended up bar hopping together. What an experience that was! The nightly rates are only a few more bucks than other similar ones, but I can assure you that they do not have the energy like the downtown Flying Pig does!

WE WERE ROBBED BY HOSTEL STAFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. This was the most horrific experience…read moreever. On an educational school trip, we booked a 4 night stay at this hostel. 8 women, including myself, were assigned ROOM 228. Hostel staff was aware that us women knew each other and were traveling together upon check in. We went to bed at 145am and woke up at 650am to the realization that euros and credit/debit cards were STOLEN from our room and our lockers. We immediately went to the front desk, which informed us that security would not be in until 3pm and that there was nothing they could review until then. We were also told that we could not view the footage due to "privacy". Interesting how we had no privacy though..in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. Upon further examination of the door in the morning, it appeared the lock was BROKEN and was not connecting with the door. The only way to get into our room was with a KEY CARD SWIPE. The hostel "manager" informed us that the hostel would be "opening up an INVESTIGATION". But would not guarantee a refund. We felt so UNSAFE here that we moved to another hotel. Never would have expected to have my rights VIOLATED in this way. This hostel should be shut down, as numerous other reviews mention thieves, thievery, theft, stolen items, feeling unsafe, and the room being in terrible condition. The staff are incompetent. Hostel staff- don't even bother replying to this review. Nothing you could say will make up for the traumatic experience I experienced at your establishment. My biggest recommendation for you is to FIX THE LOCK ON 228, refund our stay, and PROSECUTE the criminal who broke into our room. My biggest piece of advice to others is to AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Also, didn't appreciate the tattoo shop in the lobby.

On this visit, I chose Cocomama for part of the trip. Cocomama is close to Fredericksplein, which is the main artery for some hip places you'll want to go. It is near the city centre, but not too close, otherwise it gets tacky. The ladies at the front desk are friendly and helpful. They give you a full tour of the hostel, which was once a brothel. Just my luck... In the basement, there is a nice lounge area with shared kitchen and dining space. Lots of lovely couches to fall asleep on and a beautiful cat to keep you company. There is also a garden and you can go out there from 9AM - 9PM, only cigarette smoking allowed. Tons of books, movies to keep you entertained. You can also play old-school Nintendo. Wow brings back memories. They will also do your laundry for €6. If you don't have a tablet or computer, they can loan you one. Good wifi throughout the hostel. If you arrive before check-in time, you can leave your bag and check-in later, the front desk open 9AM - 9PM. I stayed in a 4 bed coed room aptly named, "The Brothel Room." Beds are comfy and also there are lockers in the room if you need to lock up something. The bathroom is in the room, so not as big of a hassle to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My only gripe is that they don't serve breakfast. It is probably one of the only places I've stayed at in Amsterdam that doesn't have breakfast. Bummer...

The hostel provided a fun environment for our two night stay and we were able to meet people visiting Amsterdam from all over. Unfortunately, the day after we checked out of the hostel my room mate woke up with bed bug bites all over her back and on her face. I understand that this is the risk you take when staying in a hostel, however I always expect for the staff to do thorough examinations of every bed before a new guest checks in. We immediately alerted Coco Mama via email about the bed bug situation. We told them about the time and money that we lost having to dry clean everything we brought into their hostel and asked for them to check the beds we stayed in. I received a response telling me that unfortunately things like this happen in hostels. There was no apology or mention of a partial refund for our stay. I reached out two more times about the situation and inquired about a refund and got no response. I find this to be completely unprofessional and telling of Coco Mama. It's unfortunate that what started out as a great stay ended up costing us time, more money, and a bad case of bed bug bites. I would not recommend staying at this hostel.

But, we were so disappointed in this hostel that my friend and I canceled our later pod hostel in this trip and swore we will never stay in another dorm room again, only private rooms for us from now on! Firstly, we unfortunately missed our first night as our flight canceled the day of and the next earliest one was the next morning. We were not upset at not being refunded the first night as we understand this is policy. However, when we arrived the next day we were not allowed to check in! They said the rooms were being cleaned. Well... if we were staying there we would be allowed access to the room anyways? Unless they just kick out everyone every morning? VERY strange. We then had to PAY for luggage storage. I've visited 20 countries, stayed in Hostels in every one, and NEVER heard of being charged for luggage storage. This is such a rip off. And of course, the luggage storage only accepted coins, not cash or card. So inconvenient to your travelers! The attached bathroom to the room only has a rain shower and sink, no toilet. You have to walk to the communal one outside the room to use the toilet. And these rain showers they brag about? They turn off automatically after only 5 seconds! Not a relaxing shower at ALL! When we were packing up the next morning, a half hour before check out time the receptionist actually came INTO our room and said, "Girls, everyone ready for check out?" Excuse me? I'm not on a school trip. I'm a paying customer here. The pod was comfortable, but VERY small. Other ones I've stayed in had room for your suitcase and your bed to sleep. Not this one and there aren't enough lockers for everyone. The rooms are tiny as are the pods. The one receptionist was nice and helped us carry luggage up as the stairs are VERY steep with no railing. This may be the worst hostel in which I've ever stayed.

The atmosphere of the hostel is so relaxing and inviting and the fresh lilacs made everything smell fantastic. Every morning we had a breakfast prepared by the staff and there was an option to have fresh eggs that were absolutely delicious. One complaint, or rather a warning: there's a man who lives above the bar across the street (lovely little local bar, by the way) who kind of just...hates people. He yelled and swore at my friends and I for simply being outside at any time of day, and at one point, he actually dumped a bucket of water out his window onto my friends. I hope this man receives the help he needs but he is extremely rude and bad for business.

The room I stayed in was for 14 people and had 2 shower, and a separate toilet for everyone to use. There are bike rental available if you want to cycle around town like the natives & even had a musician come in to entertain the guests once a week. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to everyone if you want to have a comfortable stay at a hostel.

Location is walking distance to many things. Very touristy area, though, so that kept us walking right past most of the shops and restaurants that were nearest to the hotel. Much of the art on display throughout the hotel and in the guest room is quirky and a bit racy. Staff were very friendly and helpful, both at the check-in and concierge counters. They even helped us book tickets for a canal boat tour. Our room was very spacious and clean. We even had a bit of a view from the window (mostly street view, but also a bit of the canal). Like so many modern hotels, the bathroom area was a bit atypical, with the sink and (ample) counter space mostly in the open, while toilet and showers are contained within their own separate stalls. There is actually a switch on the wall that let's you frost or unfrost the glass walls of the bathroom, according to your preferences... definitely don't share a room with someone you won't trust with that power! The hand lotion and soap smelled very nice, FYI. A few quirks. They apparently have to manually unlock the fridge/mini bar from the front desk when you check in. We learned this when we found our fridge was locked upon our arrival. Our room didn't have a remote control for the TV, which didn't really matter since we weren't going to use it, but we wanted to turn the TV off since it displays a room directory by default. Finally, it seems like someone (another guest?) stole the "Do Not Disturb" sign from our door and our neighbors' doors at some point? The front desk helped us with all this stuff, but just some weird things to share. Amsterdam hotels (and particularly in the city center) are wildly expensive. Credit card points helped us stay at this conveniently located, pleasant property.

The one award winning dessert with the peanut butter I wish had more peanut butter as we didn't really discover it till the last bite and it was so tasty. The other passionfruit dessert was so unique and different, I would definitely order that again. Restaurant itself was hip and modern and the service was as expected for an upscale place. I would return again.

There isn't much of a main area unless you smoke and want to use their reserved smoking room. As for storage for your bags before/after checking in, there are two cubbie holes near the front desk that are wide open and far from secure. As for the rooms, although my bed was very comfortable, there was only one toilet and one shower for each floor that was to be split between about 25 people. They did not supply any towels, breakfast, or even drinking water (that wasn't Bottled and costed €1). Not highly recommended, however if you have money and are just looking for a roof over your head it will give you that.

Best location (closest to all things touristy - I.e. Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank…read moreHouse, Heineken Experience), so that's 5 stars. And here we go... Minus one star for its steep ass stairway as their main entrance. You'll never find this place at night, since the sign is almost invisible and there's only a small piece of paper with the red letters painted "Hostel" posted at the top of the door. You have to ring the doorbell to be let in, then you climb up those narrow stairs to get to the main "lobby" to check in. There's a smoke room open 24 hours on the same floor (when you know you're in Amsterdam ). Minus another one for the small ass rooms with miniature bunk beds. Everything feels so squished (barely any walking room), lockers are run down, and the bed linen doesn't appear to be the cleanest. The beds were so close that I could literally turn my head and see a random face less than 6 inches away... No Bueno. Sorry, going to have to take one last star for the awkward way the showers are designed. You'll get absolutely no privacy the moment you decide you want a nice hot shower and call it a day. You scan your key, open the door, and there's a shower divided by a sliding glass (see through) door, without another door to separate that from the room with bunk beds... meaning anyone can walk in any time on you. I never felt so vulnerable in my life. ***** No free breakfast included. Free wifi. Really clean showers (despite the lack of privacy). Body wash/shampoo included. The toilets are in separate rooms outside the main rooms. In a gist, you get what you paid for. I'm not picky so I had no regrets. The proximity to everything made up for the crappy living accommodations.
