This is a very old building at the heart of "old Warrington". The pub was "modernised" back in the 1990s, but retained a few discrete rooms, rather than becoming the usual one room reminiscent of an airport lounge.
The selection of beers on offer is usually extremely good, although limited due to being a Pubco property (Punch Taverns at time of review). The landlady does manage to get in a variety of guest beers. The standard keg offerings are comprehensive and suited to the local customers and there is a good choice of spirits and shots.
The Games room has dartboard and pool table and, being away from the main bar and seating area, doesn't interfere with those of us who like a quiet drink and conversation.
A negative mark against the pub is that the toilets are so old that they cannot be kept as clean as customers would like. By the end of a night they can get quite revolting, but the staff try their hardest.
The other possible problem is that of parking. Locals either walk or know exactly where parking is allowed nearby. There is a bus stop very close and taxi drivers know it well (this is how I always get there!)
At the rear of the pub is a superb Function Room - used for all sort of celebrations and parties and, on Sunday evenings, for a regular acoustic music session. read more
