Our local grocery store was out of a particular ingredient for a special soup I make after the New Year. I called up Dearborn Bulk Foods, and they had what I needed. My son and I stopped in and found exactly what we needed. The owner was at the register and warmly greeted us with a smile. He was just a nice, down to Earth kinda guy! I eat vegan, vegetarian multiple times a week and am trying to diversify my fridge/cupboard portfolio. Im looking for all the bulk stores in Metro Detroit. So help me out. This is essentially a comparison review between the Dearborn bulk food store and the Taylor Bulk Foods store. I feel that the Dearborn bulk store has a bigger selection for Dry Goods. There were beans, grains, teas, many flours like oat flour but also harder to find ones like phyllium husk flour, various styles of oatmeal, and Soup bases. Grind your own Nut Butter was nice too. Just be careful. They make you write prices and bin #s, but wasn't always rung up right. Also be selective with Your items, not all looked well taken care of. read more

This is a great store for buying spices, flours, nuts, candy and oats in bulk. My husband loves this place for bulk sunflower seeds, granola and cashews. You'll usually save way more here than buying in store, especially with oatmeal. Also, even though it's a "bulk" food store, you don't have to buy in bulk. Jacob normally buys just a couple ounces of sunflower seeds, granola, etc. The place is cramped, which is its biggest downfall. Don't bother grabbing a cart because there's no way to walk down the aisles with it. They are cash only unless your total is $5 or more. read more

Definitely a little high priced but if you're looking for a variety then this your place - I actually only came in for some pecans because in the fall there seems to be tough to find at a reasonable price. Walking in here - i wished i was a baker because i would be in heaven. Lol! I was greeted when i walked in and immediately asked if i was looking for anything special - of course i wanted to browse a little. Even though there's a policy of strictly NO TASTING - there were a few i would've like to. I guess when i'm feeling fancy i could pick out some new treats. Don't sleep on this place - they also have a clearance section in the back. I highly suggest stopping there FIRST. read more

An overall solid place to get bulk items. The store is old and out-dated, but I suppose that that's fine. The service is lack-luster, which can be frustrating. The few times that I've gone in here I've either needed to ask to have them refill the nut butter machines, or they are completely out - and this is the main reason I go in here... so, not great. If you need cooking supplies or just a candy fix, this is my favorite place. Aisles and aisles of spices, nuts, dried fruit, candy- you name it. And everything is reasonably priced by the pound. Just a tip, write a list of the items you need prior to entering the store. Otherwise, you'll wander down the aisles and start grabbing all kinds of treats. This place is tempting. For instance, for my most recent trip I really only wanted to make my special trail mix. However, my eyes spied a new flavor of gummy bears and I was lost. $20 in gummies later.... read more

Absolutely love this place! They have a great selection of spices, different kinds of flours, grains, loose tea and nuts...and candy, too! Great for making your own trail mix and granola bars! There is a little basket (near the tea) so you can measure out exactly what you need for a recipe! It's a bit out of my way, but I definitely have no problem making the 30 minute drive there! The only way they could improve would be to maybe have a couple more scales hanging around! read more

Whatever the lady at the front desk is having for breakfast, give me that. By far the nicest human being I have ever met and by far the most positive and delightful person. Short, dark hair, slightly dark skin, you my friend are awesome. Always smiling. Singing. Having a great day. She's the difference between a 3-4 star review and a 5 star review. We only come here for the sugar. Very large selection of candy and chocolate. Fill up your bag and take it to the register for a weigh in. Dirt cheap. Today we spent $1.15 for a decent size bag of mix candy. They carry other items. Spices and seasonings. Pretty much anything that comes in powder form. No complaints with this business. read more

Looks to be under new management, and it's getting throwback: used to be stocked with nutritional items, and now fewer is that category, and more is the candy, and junk-food stock. Also, they expect us to write the price and the item #, and last time I visited the store, only saw one unsharpened pencil. I ordered 10lbs of Kraft Cheddar powder cheese from them and Aiden took care of it fast and professional. I requested it to be shipped to CA. They normally don't do it based on what one of employee said so but they went out of their way to do it for their customer which is an A+ from me. Communication is also A++, they called many times during the transaction to make sure everything is correct, once they shipped, they called again to provide the confirmation number as well. I am so happy buying stuffs from this place. read more

This place is pretty cool for being in a crappy shopping center. They have a huge selection of candy bins. I just discovered the wonders of twizzlers other than cherry. They have peach, root beer, grape, and watermelon flavors. They also have a huge collection of dried fruit. For those of you without a sweet tooth, they have barrels full of spices for cheap. However, because I don't cook when I'm traveling, I shall stick to candy. read more

Nice staff. However beware of the bulk food items such as grains and flours. I saw live moths crawling in the bin of red lentils. I alerted the staff and they removed it right away. What if someone whose vision isn't the best bought some of that? Also bought home some nutritional yeast and ended up with a terrible infestation of red mites in my cabinet. Not happy. They have a great selection of items for baking & cooking (spices). I like to cook and bake and experiment with new recipes that sometimes call for ingredients i don't normally have on hand and/or don't want to buy a lot of. At Bulk Food's you can buy just a small quantity so it doesn't sit in your cupboard forever. I always buy all my Christmas baking stuff from here, too. Excellent variety. It is small and tight but so what - does not effect the variety of items or quality. I've never had a problem with the quality of the food. (I'm not a big candy fan but they DO carry my beloved root beer barrels. That alone warrants a very nice review!) Nice job, Bulk Foods people. read more

Randomly stumbled across this hidden gem while waiting to get my oil changed and man am I glad I did!!! This place is amazing! The last time I was this excited was when I came across the bulk candy factory in Eastern Market as a child and this one has twice the selection. All of the classic packaged loveables, as well as the staple pay per pound, dried fruits, trail mixes, and nuts. My new favorite local hideout :-P read more

I love this place! It's great for getting just enough of an ingredient you may not want sitting around forever. It's excellent for cutting down on the waste of packaging from grocery stores, too. They even let me scoop my purchases into my own reusable bags instead of their plastic ones. The big brand bulk places in Canada (where I live) won't let you do that, which is the main reason I come here instead. Great prices, too, especially on candy (buy here and take it to the movie theatre, just saying). read more

The Bulk Food store inside the Westborn shopping plaza is in a tier of its own when it comes to good business practices. I've occasionally frequented this place after work for a few years now and there's got to be hundreds of products in this little shop! Wanna eat healthy in the new year? go to bulk foods and check out all the dried vegetables, dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, oats, and beans. Wanna eat unhealthy? go to bulk foods and try one of the endless different candies or chocolates. They even have sander's bumpy cake in the freezer. My experience with the staff has been generally awesome. The management will even try to order products specially for you if you ask. The young gentleman that works in the back of the store literally drops whatever he's doing to help me find what I need or even research a baking recipe for me all the while making sure to make me feel welcome and unimposing. You can't find this type of quality service anywhere. 5 stars! read more

I grew up in Dearborn but now live out of state, but whenever I visit home I make sure to stock up on goodies at Bulk Food. As a kid, I loved the candy selection--every shape of gummi candy available, chocolate-covered everything, m&ms and jelly beans, and tons of things great for decorating a cake or a sundae. Now that I'm older, I've really gotten into the aisle with grains, dried fruits, and nuts. I was inspired to write this review while eating a delicious muesli I made with rolled oats, oat bran, wheat bran, flax seeds, dried cranberries, raw sliced almonds, and unsweetened coconut flakes. They also sell different kinds of trail/party mix by the pound, and delicious salty snacks like chex mix or sesame sticks. The best thing about this place is that, since they sell by the pound, you can buy as much or as little of something as you want, in case you're not sure if you'll like it. My FAVORITE store ever! This place is amazing - candy, oats, rice, cous cous, all kinds of flour, sugar, nuts, cookies, snacks, mac & cheese dust (you read that right!), spices, baking supplies, teas, sprinkles... Any staple you'd ever need in your kitchen can be found here, at a fraction of the price. Staff are friendly and helpful, and store is clean and well organized. I go here a couple times a month, and recommend that everyone check it out! read more

I was shopping at this store every two weeks, but I will never return. I went into the store on Friday to pick up some raw cashews, when I opened the bin I smelled fish. I took a scoop of nuts and smelled them, sure enough it was the nuts. I called the manager over and informed her that the bin was rancid. She said "thats strange we just got them in, you know raw nuts do smell different". I said yeah I know, but I'm not buying them . I just thought I'd let you know they were bad. She scooped some up to smell and said oh yeah, they do smell a little fishy. I said yeah, they're bad. I continued shopping for about 15 minutes and during that time she did not remove the bin from the floor. I returned the following day just to see if the bin had been replaced. It was not, it still smelled very strongly of fish ( which is what nuts smell like when rancid) . I am really bummed about this because this is the only bulk food store in my area, but I shop the bulk food store because I want to eat healthy and if they are not maintaining there bins in a sanitary manner then I am kind of defeating the purpose I think.
