If you like finding one-of-a-kind furniture or decorative pieces, statement pieces or antiques…read morewhich might have some interesting story attached to it, then you owe yourself a visit to Shivam Imports. Located in the ground floor of a warehouse straddling the very top of De l'Eglise Avenue, St. Patrick, the Lachine Canal and underneath the highway, I would never have even guessed or known about this place if it wasn't for the fact that my brother recently bought a beautiful, hand-carved wooden table here from Rajasthan, India - the kind you see in decorative magazines, high end lofts and spas or super posh furniture stores only you're too scared to look at the prices there. Here, you can look at them all you want and you'll be floored at the bargains you'll find, no joke. Shivam Imports is normally a wholesaler but they do sell to individuals and the prices are more than reasonable for the sorts of pieces in their showroom, but you need to make an appointment to visit their showroom (at the moment). So despite the appointments and out-of the way location, it is well worth your while to stop in and have a good look. You won't regret it. First off, this ain't no IKEA. You'll find hand-carved teak tables, antique mirrors, crazy pillars which look like the belong in a palace of some Maharajah, antique finished cabinets, candle-holders, unique pieces like wooden headboards. Stuff no one you know will ever have because everything here is so individual and unique. If you're like me and don't like generic anything, love old-fashioned quality then you'll just love it here. Andrew the owner is a really chill, easy-going guy and often buys pieces directly in India and makes trips several times a year there. If you're thinking of re-decorating, need some ideas or inspiration or looking for that one unique mirror to place in your room or a conversation-piece coffee table, look no further.

This place makes me dream of having friends over again whenever covid restrictions have lifted!…read more The base pricing here for regular sized items is ok. Some of it is cheaper than grocery stores and others are more expensive. However, some are definitely a great price if you buy 3 or more. Example, the 510g of McCain Deep'n Delicious sell for $4.99 when on sale at the grocery store and typically is $5.30ish regular price. Here, you're getting them for only $4.97 each and that drops to $4.47 if you buy 3 or more. Also if you want to buy a year's supply of flour, no need to pay overpriced for the 2.5kg bags at $4.99 from the grocery store! Here, you can secure a 20kg bag of Robin Hood flour for only $14.99. Major cost savings. You'll never buy pre-made bread ever again! If my math is correct, this would be equivalent to getting the 2.5kg bags for only $1.75. A customer walked in an asked for a pallette of 40 x 20kg bags of flour. I guess they know a good price when they see it too! Although they're President's Choice, they didn't ask for my PC points card. Looks like it might not apply here. They have tons of takeout containers and boxes too. Great for food a fundraiser. Hopefully, covid dies down soon and I can come back and buy 3+ portions to take advantage of the bulk pricing and invite guests over!

Very odd ambience for a grocery store. All the shelves are packed with stuff but everything is…read moreclearly just thrown in there. There are random carts littered throughout with random items sold for shockingly low prices. As many other people have mentioned, there is a metric fuck ton of dried fish in the back. It doesn't smell as strongly as the rest of the comments say it does though haha The meat was pretty shit though and the avocados we bought sucked

What can I say about Segal's Market? Once upon a time when I was a poor and starving student…read moreliving in Montreal I shopped at Segal's every week. Yes, it's grungy in there, and smells weird, and is full of salty people, but I was able to get bags of groceries that fed me for an entire week for about $10. Admittedly that was a while ago, and I was a vegetarian back then, and I weighed less than 100 lbs, but hey I lived to tell this story. I was back at Segal's this past week, for a stroll down memory lane, and with the exception of some new security cameras and TV screens, it's exactly how I remembered it. It's still poorly lit. The refrigerated sections still have those yellowing plastic curtains. The floors are still dirty and it still smelled weird. Prices are a bit higher, but I would say keeping with inflation. They stock a few more organic items now. The bulk items used to just be in open tubs (like at Bulk Barn, minus the coverings), but are now in plastic garbage/recycling bins, with lids, lol. The "scoops" are plastic water jugs that are tied to the bins. Most are cracked or broken. I found this amusing. This place has apparently been around since 1927. Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but I have a soft spot in my heart for its "this is who I am, warts and all, take it or leave it" attitude.

Looking for a set of Chinese China? (I've always wanted to say that) How about some decorative…read morewooden umbrellas? Perhaps a set of chopsticks or cheesy generic Chinese costumes? It's all here at the China Arts Whole Sale. Inside one will find aisles and aisles of what looks to be junky, low quality, made-in-China stuff and for the most part it's true. Nothing here will be of significant value, just something to get for decoration or temporary purposes (like halloween, a play, or for fun). The musty smell is also an indicator that you may come out smelling like mothballs. The guys running the joint are nice and helpful. English doesn't seem to be a problem here, but one would be much better off speaking Cantonese. They have a pretty extensive inventory for most of the things on display, don't be timid to ask for the new stuff if it happens to be in better condition. It's easy to get lost in the back and there are no signs to indicate what is what or where most things are located. It's one of those stores that could double as a flea market, but in order for one to find what they want, they need to feel things out first. Out of most of the touristy wholesale stores, this seems to be one of the largest I've seen in Montreal's Chinatown. I doubt I'll be back, I've seen one too many of these kinds of places already.
