Please avoid this agency to save you some time. The agent that we worked with show us horrible apartments (it's a tough market so I don't blame him for that). However, he didn't plan ahead of time to arrange for the keys. We literally sat in the office for hours waiting for him to call all the places. We gave him plenty of heads up for the ones we wanted to see and ended up seeing 5 out of the 10-11 over 2 days. Bad business model. He knew we needed a place pretty soon and we have limited choices. He was pressuring us to take a place that's he knew it was awful. When we decided on a place he didn't help us to negotiate the start date or ridiculous deposit that the landlord has requested. He put in all the maximum numbers to secure higher probability that the landlord will sign a lease with us. We felt bad that he didn't earn any commission but... come on.. he needs to up his game. I worked with Stephanie at Bulfinch last year to find an apartment near Fenway. As I wasn't too familiar with the area and needed to find a place ASAP due to prior contract issues, I searched on Yelp for a realty company that knew the area well. I met up with Stephanie (who came to pick me up in her car after my job ended), and we went on to tour 3-4 different apartments on the same day. We couldn't find anything on that day, but she promised me that she would keep looking for the perfect match. This is probably the best place to go if you're looking to find a great apartment that meets all/most of your criteria. Everybody in the office goes out of their way to help you and they work cohesively as a team to figure it out unlike the other places where agents are just working for themselves. I reached out to them since I was moving from NYC and needed a building with a Conceirge in beacon hill area at a certain price point and they delivered it within a few hours and in less than 24 hours I had signed my lease. My building has a doorman, a rooftop deck and a beautiful apartment. I had a really bad experience using Bulfinch this year to find my apartment. It was often very difficult to communicate with our agent. We signed a lease for an apartment and they never gave us some of the crucial lease documents to sign such as the lead paint forms. I have lived in Boston for 7 years, during all that time I have rented apartments and this was by far the worst experience I have ever had with using a brokerage in the city. read more

I visited Boston from abroad for one week in August in order to find an apartment with a move-in date of mid-September. It was late in the month, and I had only a short period of time to find a place. I had already spent a long and depressing morning looking at a number of apartments, all of which seemed poorly maintained and rather unpleasant to live in. Certainly nothing that I would feel comfortable calling home. Every broker I spoke with that morning either had those few apartments to show, or straight-out said there was nothing worth viewing. Nearing defeat, I decided to give Bulfinch Boston Realty a try, based on the recommendation of a friend. I spoke with Nicole, and I told her my modest apartment preferences. To my surprise, Nicole claimed she had the perfect apartment for me. I viewed it, and sure enough, the apartment was clean, very well maintained, met all of my preferences and was close to my price-point. Both Nicole and the lessor were extremely professional during the viewing, and provided all relevant information in clear terms even without my asking. My experience with Bulfinch lasted about 3 hours, from calling Nicole to signing the lease. So if you want to live in the best part of Boston, this is the agency you want to work with. I recently moved to Boston and was very anxious about finding a place to live that's affordable. I wasn't sure what to do, so I decided to work with a broker. I actually found out about Bulfinch on Yelp. I worked with Nicole, and she was so sweet. She asked me about my requirements and made a few phone calls and found a place for me right away on Comm Ave. We checked out the apartment in the afternoon and I returned the next day to sign the lease. Knowing that I was new to Boston, Nicole showed me around and told me where things were in the neighborhood. She also told me about things to watch out for in Boston. I got Stephanie's name out of Yelp, and not long after, I got a separate referral by one of her former clients. It was a fairly simple process - I reached out to her with an initial phone call, then emailed my list of "requirements" for a rental. We then scheduled 2 days for viewing rental units. So we got there on a Thursday, she showed us a bunch of places, and at the end of the day, made a decision - filled out an application and cut out a cheque for a security deposit. An hour after, we got our approval from the property manager and received the copy of the lease for signing. There wasn't even a need for a second day. One thing about working with a broker is you have to give them as much specific information about your preferences, as possible. You can't expect them to know what you want based on a few, vague sentences. For example, one of my deal breakers is the absence of a laundry system in unit, but Stephanie explained to me that this is not a common feature in Boston apartments so I had to revise my list. Having said that, she still managed to show me a couple of units with this feature. If I hadn't mentioned this right off the bat, we would have both wasted our time looking at other units that have no laundry facilities at all within the premises - and time is of the essence here as rental units in Boston get snatched off the market so fast, it's not even funny. This is my first time to work with a broker and she has made this a very pleasant, and easy process. I'd recommend her to anyone looking for a place in Boston. read more

I spoke to several other agencies before contacting Bulfinch, but none of them seemed to listen to what I was looking for. They just wanted to make a sale quickly. I arrive in Boston with no sense of direction and no idea what to expect in terms of housing. Nicole went above and beyond to show me apartments that would be convenient for me to get to work. She even went over how I could get there and what each area had to offer. It was almost like having my very own tourguide! A lot of reviews mention that a lot of rentals they saw were not that nice. I checked out places with another real estate company and I think that has a lot to do with the housing market in Boston (you get a lot less than what you pay for). Working with this company (and Gary in particular) took so much stress out of moving. I was working with a very short time frame and was coming in from out of town. Gary spoke with me a few times to get a sense of what I was looking for and on only 2 days notice he was able to put together a list of great places. I flew in on a Saturday and Gary spent all day showing me around. He was extremely knowledgeable, patient and just a good guy who was easy to talk to. When I went back to the office to sign my paperwork I realized I left my ID at the last apartment we had seen. I had a bad experience with Bulfinch Realty. In the beginning it was ideal. They were friendly and engaging. It took them awhile to find me a renter, but they did find one who paid on time. I also paid Bulfinch Realty to maintain my apartment while I was away. The renter did significant damage - over $2,000 worth. I asked Bulfinch to pay and they gave me a small amoutn. On one hand I was lucky they gave me something. On the other hand they were responsible for most of the damage. It is criminal they wouldn't pay all of it. Literally joined Yelp just so I could write this review. Could not be more impressed with Bulfinch! Was convinced to give it a shot after reading the other reviews, because I had two days to find an apartment here, and Bulfinch has been in business in the area for about 30 years. I worked with Charlie, and within two hours of calling him the first time, I had six potential listings in my inbox. He was incredibly responsive throughout the whole process and seemed to understand and listen to every requirement and concern that I had. During our showings, one of the other realtors at Bulfinch got notice that a beautiful 2 bedroom in Back Bay (at a not Back Bay price) had just gotten on the market, and he had me there within fifteen minutes. I was the first person to see it and was instantly sold. Not only is it impressive how well everyone in the office works together, but they are so NICE! As in, they took time to talk with me and even offered to buy me Pinkberry when I was completing the application materials. They have an incredible knowledge of not just Boston, but the different landlords, and even though my budget was on the lower end for the neighborhoods I wanted, they clearly took the time to avoid sending me to someone who didn't care about their tenants. I'll admit, Bulfinch differs from some of the other places in that it doesn't seem trendy. They aren't going to roll up in some fancy car and promise unrealistic thing, and the office itself is small without a giant sign in a cool font. Instead, they take the time to educate you, educate themselves about you, and find you the absolute best you can get for your money. Plus, they're funny as hell and make you feel right at home. We agreed even though it was not 24 hours notice and our apartment isn't even available for rent for over 5 months (Sept. 1st). This am we text her to confirm that she was still coming between that time. She said yes. Well, the time came and went so I text her to see what was up. She apologized and said she wasn't showing it today. I just feel it is unprofessional and disrespectful that she couldn't take a few seconds to text us to let us know it was canceled. Very professional office! The staff were all very helpful, in particular Alicia, who is one of the co-owners of the business. She listened attentively as I explained my particular wants and needs. Since I just walked into the office, without an appointment, at the end of the day, she said she'd make arrangements for us to view a number of apts. the following day. Just as she promised, Alicia called me the next morning and we agreed upon a time to meet. We saw a number of apts. but none of them were EXACTLY what I was hoping for. Alicia said she had a couple of other possibilities that we could see but she had to speak to the property owners. I'm so glad I decided to wait while she made her calls because one of those apts. turned out to be my new home! Definitely contact these folks if you're searching for an apt.
