I'm not so happy with the fact that the entire house is done in retrofit LED units (which should have been noted when Jason came out to do the estimate). The units sent for the job were bulb-type units, not retrofits, so they did not match the rest of the house. I had to order and install my own retrofit LEDs so they matched the rest of the house and garage. I'll probably use them again, but I'll pay closer attention to the details on the estimate.

I kept getting routed into their voicemail system and if you didn't have a specific person's extension, you couldn't leave a message. There wasn't even a general mailbox for interested parties. Finally, since they were so near me, I just walked in one day on my lunch hour and found a group of people clustered around a big table. Rather than someone popping out of their seat to ask if they could help, they all looked at me like I had horns growing from my head. Finally one person got up, I told him that I had difficulty getting anyone on the phone and left my business card. I should have known right then that this was going to be an exercise in futility. I did get a call from the gentleman the next day and made an appointment to meet with him, my wife, and our real estate agent the following week. In the time between, I found a piece of property to build on and sent the info to him so his team could go by to look at it to get an idea of what size home would fit on it and if there would be any prep work necessary. I will say this: the Red Door website is very good. Lots of homes, plans, details about finishes and options, and some basic pricing. However...I suspect it is put together by their parent company...not the local office. The following week, we showed up at the time we'd agreed on, and the gentleman and the rest of the people reacted like we walked in without an appointment. They weren't prepared or ready for much of anything. The office was a mess and they hadn't prepared any estimates for us. The guy did a fairly decent job of BS-ing but I could tell they were completely unprepared and had forgotten we were coming by. We had picked a mostly level lot in an existing neighborhood, but they said the site work alone was going to cost upwards of $40-50K. I'll freely admit ignorance on pricing for this type of thing, but it seemed pretty excessive. We stayed for about 20 minutes going over a few possible finishes and other build options before leaving. As we walked in the parking lot, my wife and I looked at our real estate agent and said, "NOPE!" at the same time. Maybe these people have other customers who are happy with the homes that they built. Maybe business is so good for them right now they can afford to pick and choose their customers. Maybe other franchises in other towns operate much better, but so far as running a business reaching out for new customers or responding to new inquiries, this bunch were awful. If I ran my business like they did, I'd go out of business in a few months. I come from a family involved in construction and contractors. I know what should be expected from a construction company. These people weren't it. They have a pretty website, but after that, this local entity falls like a house of cards.
