Open chicken soulvaki
Hannah L.

My mom loves Buffalo's Greek Fest, so we try to attend every year. And I never mind going, because I'll NEVER turn down a chance to eat some good Greek grub! I really like this fest as an opener to Buffalo's festival season. The weather is usually pleasant and everyone is in great spirits. Parking can be a pain, but there's usually plenty of seating, and LOTS of food and drinks to go around. This year entry was $3. You have to buy tickets for food and drinks, and depending on what you get it can be pricey. I opted for the open chicken souvlaki and some rice pudding for the road. My parents got an order of loukoumades which were delicious per usual. And my boyfriend had a beef soulvaki wrap which was absolutely massive! I'd say we did pretty well for ourselves in the food department. In terms of entertainment, the music is always going strong, which I love! They also have an area dedicated to artisan booths that include art and jewelry. I'll be back to the Greek Fest year after year. Yummy food, good music, and happy times. What could be better? Opa!

Greek Fest is a great time for anyone, including kids! If you're looking to try new foods, baked goods, or Greek wines, this is the place to do so! Outside is where the music is, kids activities, and much of the food. While we were out there, we had the Soulvalki on a stick, which was marinated pork on a stick and could be hit or miss. Mine was extremely flavorful and worth the $4. My husband's had a lot of fatty pieces on it though and he didn't think it had that much flavor. We also got two entrees to go (moussaka and a beef soulvaki - both good and filling). Inside there's a Greek history exhibit upstairs, gift shop, church entrance, and baked goods!! We split a delicious chocolate cake, dipped in a chocolate shell, topped with chocolate whipped cream, and chocolate sprinkles. As you can guess- it was amazing!! Downstairs there's a room selling used homegoods, another selling crafts, a shop with Mediterranean foods, a movie room, and a vineyard room, where you can sample and buy Greek wines. We bought a bottle of Zoe, an agiorgitiko and cab sauv blend. Also, very good! Even though there's a small admission price, it was worth it for everything going on.

We had a great time at the Greek Festival. Some of the best Greek food I ever had.(Gyro) (Kabob). The weather was beautiful that Saturday. We ate, listened to some music and walked around the absolutely stunning church. They also had a homemade pastery section. Easy parking. Great Music. A great way to spend a couple hours.

Buffalo Greek Fest takes place on the last weekend of May every year. It's an ethnic festival which has grown enormously in the 37 years it's been going on and serves an estimated tens of thousands of people throughout its weekend of operation. I take pride that Buffalo is home to the largest Polish celebration (Dyngus Day) in the US, a huge Greek festival as well as one of the largest Shakespeare festivals in the country. We definitely take our summer festivals very seriously and it's awesome to see the community come out and support these events. Entry to Greek Fest costs $2. We went on Saturday night and participated in some fun sirtaki dancing. There was a live band and a host of entertainers and dancers throughout the night. Beer is $5 a pop. For those coming to this event for "authentic Greek food," my sage advice to you is to set your expectations low. Food is expensive and meh. You can't expect high quality when they are trying to serve 10-20k people in a festival, fast-paced environment. I had some lamb with a Greek salad and it was just OK. One of the only vegetarian options is a spanakopita (the other is a Saganaki). I found the # of people at this event on a Saturday night quite overwhelming, but it was still fun. We did a lot of dancing, saw activities such as face painting. There's plenty of seating, so you can expect to find a picnic table to sit down at throughout this tented outdoor/indoor festival. It's a lot of fun and if huge crowds overwhelm you -- my suggestion is to come on a Sunday (although the dancing may not be as pronounced). For those that missed it this year, I suggest coming out next year and seeing if this celebration is for you!

This is my favorite festival in Buffalo of all time, the one that I always look forward to with anticipation! And even though it's true that lines for food sometime are endless and that the food quality maybe doesn't live up to your expectations, but forget about it! That's not why you go to the Greek festival, you can get Greek food at one of dozens Greek restaurants in Buffalo. What you go for is an awesome, fun, mindblowing, shoes wracking sirtaki dancing! No other festival in Buffalo offers authentic dancing that brings hundreds of people together and makes them swirl in circles for hours!

Just after opening--no line for the food yet.

I'm impressed by the Buffalo Greek Fest! I used to live in the Boston area, and a Greek church near my old apartment had a festival every summer that I enjoyed. I didn't have high expectations for the Buffalo Greek Fest since Buffalo is a much smaller city, but the Buffalo Greek Fest takes the cake (or maybe baklava in this case). I visited Greek Fest on Saturday, right when the festival opened for the day at 11. There was already a line to pay for the $2 admission fee. There were multiple stands within the festival to purchase food tickets, so we didn't have to wait long. I also appreciated that each ticket stand had a sign with food prices, so you could gauge how many tickets you'd need. Prices were pretty reasonable. For $30, this is what my husband and I got: - Moussaka ($8) - Tiropita, aka cheese pie ($4) - Greek salad ($5) - Greek coffee ($3), comes with a sesame cookie for dunking - Greek custard pastry ($6) - 6 marbled koulourakia (butter twist cookies, $4) It's not the best Greek food that we've had, but since we went early, the hot foods were hot, and everything seemed fresh. All the volunteers we interacted with were friendly. The festival is huge. The outdoor tent area has the savory foods, loukoumades (sweet fried dough puffs), the bar, and the live music. Inside, there's the cafe for coffee and desserts and a pastry shop on the upper floor, and on the lower level, there are a lot of vendors, selling Greek wines, groceries, T-shirts and other gift items. Plus, there are cultural presentations that are interesting, even if you aren't Greek or Orthodox Christian. My husband and I sat in on a presentation on Greek Orthodox iconography, in the church's main worship space. He stayed at the festival longer than I did for some additional presentations (I had to catch up on some work), and even did a tasting at one of them! I generally don't like paying entry fees for festivals (since I spend additional money on food once inside), but $2 is reasonable, and the presentations make it more than worth it. We weren't there at the right time to see any dancing, but I imagine that it's a lot more crowded at those times, so I'm not that disappointed.

It all started in 2010, and since then the event has been extremely popular not only among local residents. The festival takes place in a park worth visiting not just for the festival itself. It's small, but well-maintained and compact, with the picturesque Glen Falls. It's a perfect place for a little stroll, or a getaway from the crowd. This year, 150 vendors participated in the event. I'm sure everyone could find something interesting for themselves. I got caught at two booths for a little longer than the others. The first was Enchanted Cottage Candles. Actually, it was a really popular spot. We all couldn't believe how perfect each candle looked, not to mention the scent, which was absolutely stunning. I also had to stop at Susie Byerley Fine Art Oil Painting from Southern Indiana. I hardly ever talk to vendors, but this time I just had to chat a little bit. Her extraordinary talent was impossible to miss. I'm sure many complimented her traditional representational art. I hope she managed to sell at least a few of her beautiful pieces. A good chunk of the Elmwood strip is closed down for two days of music, food, and, of course, lots of wonderful art. What I like about the Elmwood festival over Allentown Art Fest is that the lineup of artisans selling goods that are not only affordable, but could easily find a place in your home, too. At Allentown, there are a lot of "once in a lifetime" pieces that you'd *really* need a specific place for. But at the Elmwood festival, you can easily find wall art, pottery, and glassware that could fit right into your space. There's always a great lineup of food trucks and bands here, and I really like how all the small businesses on Elmwood stay open so you can shop there, too. It's a little crowded -- but I never really mind. I know summer is coming to a close whenever it's time for the Elmwood Festival of the Arts. Pros: Id have to say each exhibitor was a high quality one. There really was none of the "junk" you may find at other festivals. The food options were in specific areas, I noticed two of them, one at the St James end of the festival, the other on one of the side streets. Id imagine there was a third, but I did not make note of it. The expected food trucks were available. Tons of "local tables", the BPO had one, Olmsted Conservancy another, Burchfield Penney a third. There were many others as well. A great way to learn more about the various attractions Buffalo has to offer year round. Cons: For these not living nearby or taking public transport, there was terrible parking organization, they had closed off most of the side streets nearby to "Local Traffic Only". If this had been a very humid hot weekend, that would have made for some long hot walks just to get there. As a result, there was really not a "disabled friendly" atmosphere about the festival. (If there was a designated disabled parking area, it was not well publicized enough to be easily found by me, searching for it on line). They sold water for $1 bottle. Really? Costs under $5 for a case (including the deposit costs), sell the water for .50 (even .75) and stop doing such a huge markup. And while you are at it, put a sign on the table of the cost so people don't have to ask about it. Other: There was music around as well, but I did not stay for long for any of that. Seemed like a great venue for it though, various stages and other covered areas throughout. While I found the quality of the vendors terrific, I can only give this 3 stars, I think it was A-OK. I am a fan, but the lack of easy disabled access brings it down a star for me.

This event is definitely all about the food, and it's huge. Definitely come hungry and enjoy Italian and Italian-American staples like pizza, sausages, meatballs, arancini, pasta, etc., as well as plenty of sweet desserts. With over fifty vendors this year, Hertel Avenue was transformed into a bustling, crowded marketplace. In my opinion, the atmosphere is rather intense. People are eating, drinking, socializing, and catching up with friends and family. The air around the festival is always heavy with the smell of smoke and frying onions and peppers. Believe me, lots and lots of grilled Italian sausages are floating around during this festival. Unfortunately, apart from tables near the main stage, which must be reserved in advance for a fee, there is nowhere to sit and eat comfortably. Lots of people are walking and eating or standing. I even saw someone use the top of the trash can as a table, yuck. As I mentioned, there's a main entertainment stage, if you like the Frankie Scinta vibe. The demonstration/cooking tent is a fun place to visit as well. The best way to plan for the special attractions is to simply check out the website. I think it's worth it. On the practical side, it's important to wear proper footwear. Because of the big crowd, I had to be extra careful not to get stepped on or have my toes run over by a baby stroller. It's wild. I guess that's the beauty of this festival. Fun fact: I ate my first raw clam many years ago at this festival while on vacation in the States :). Those were the days when carousels, rides, and similar attractions were still part of the event. It was probably more kids/family-friendly than it has been in recent years. Maria's Muffuletta sandwich from Maria's Bene Cibo food truck. This was my sandwich choice. The meat was really high quality and the olive spread tasted great. Sandwich was served on a seeded DiCamillo roll, yum! Customer service from the truck was also top notch. 2. (yes, tie for 2)Beef brisket sandwich from Fat Bob's food truck. This was my sister's sandwich choice. There were huge chunks of meat piled on the sandwich, which compared to others I've had that were sliced, made this way better.
