Lisa maintains the highest level of organization and discipline while radiating a warmth of personality and love of dance at all times. Her knowledge both of ballet itself and also the timeline of the development of the human body work together to prevent injury and ensure that skills are built over time, not pushed before a student is ready. (As a very active adult, I really appreciate that...I didn't destroy my body when I was 11!) Artistic expression is emphasized along with the pure physicality of dance. Musical selections are broad and varied, and Lisa always encourages listening to the character of a piece of music and allowing it to be a major part of the movement you create, even when working on an isolated skill for just a few minutes. The atmosphere that Lisa's studio creates is one of support and encouragement. I am still in touch with the friends that I made in her classes. Everyone has frustrating days in class, but even on those days I felt supported, valued, and respected by Lisa and my classmates. I think that experiencing the feeling of encouragement during a time of struggle is an invaluable part of learning anything, and you will find that at Lisa's studio 100% of the time. Lisa's studio also offers opportunities to perform as an ensemble in the community. Participating in productions for schools and community organizations was one of the best things about being Lisa's student! Teamwork takes on a new definition when you're in performance communicating non-verbally, and rehearsals offer a fabulous opportunity for older students to teach younger students new roles, or work with them on their own sequences. The feeling of completing a difficult performance onstage with no teacher telling you what to do is an unbelievable one for a student to have, and it means even more when you're doing it for an audience in your community. It's also nice to know that, unlike a once-a-year recital, the work that you've done to prepare the piece will be showcased again and again, as you continue to share it with more organizations around the city. In addition to choreography classes where you learn hip-hop technique (at different levels of skill/experience), they also offer aerobics-type classes - like Zumba but with better choreography and music (in my opinion). You don't have to have any dance experience to enjoy these, but dancers tend to love them because it feels more like dancing than working out (it's actually both, equally... shhh). There are flexible and affordable payment options: pay for one class at a time, buy a 5- or 10-class pack, or buy an unlimited month at a time! Save those pennies. It didn't take long before I realized that all of my anxiety was for nothing; Sarah is amazing! Every lesson with her was a fantastic learning experience and so much fun. While we were taking the lessons, we were also in the middle of a cross-country move, we had to put a beloved pet to sleep, and in general my boyfriend and I were losing our minds. These lessons were better than relationship counseling and really allowed us to reconnect and relax with each other. I'm not dramatic enough to say that without Sarah our relationship would have been in trouble, but I am positive that Sarah and her salsa lessons helped us during a difficult time. Plus we were totally able to impress the heck out of all of our friends at a recent wedding with our mad dance skills! I recommend Salsa Sarah to everyone! Despite living an hour and a half south of the city, we decided to give it a try twice a week. Fast forward to this year: he has completed his fifth summer intensive at Neglia and attends class 6 days a week. Yes, we still live 1.5 hours away. My son has discovered -under his excellent teachers at Neglia- that he wants to dance professionally, and there is no one anywhere near us that matches the quality of instruction he gets there. Besides that, the close knit studio environment has made them feel like family at this point! There is a small waiting area for the parents to wait on the kids, and I only saw two bigger rooms where the kids practice. There was no organization at all, especially for a first time grandparent doing the drop off. Thank God my 5 year old knew the drill. There is no staff greeting, that I experienced. The biggest issue is the parking situation. It's awful. You have classes getting out within minutes of the new classes starting. It is true chaos. For that reason alone, I personally would have never picked this dance studio. Could be the old lady in me don't know. But on the positive side, my grand daughter loves it here, loves her teachers and truly enjoys it. So in the end guess that's all that matters.
