That was July, 2014. After we were able to track them down by leaving daily messages, the General Manager met with us at our home in October of 2015. After that, they supposedly merged with another company, we were not able to contact them. All phone numbers were out of service or led to the other company. They took our money and ran. They are the worst contractors I have ever come across. They have no ethics, integrity or moral code. Please do NOT hire these contractors. Their employees are not licensed and, they are not listed with the Better Business Bureau. BBB gave them a grade of D- for their lack of professionalism and lack of human decency. Please do not hire these people. They stole our money and did not return our calls. Email bounced and like I said, phone numbers were out of order. They are not good people and they do not deserve your time and definitely not your money. Please do your research. If you do, you will see that you need to stay clear of this company.

I was afraid the estimates from Harth Builders would have been overblown and caused me a problem in court anyway.

I feel very strongly that I got exactly what I had envisioned from day one. Emily was our designer, and she knew what I wanted right from the beginning. She listened to me, and she made it happen. She was also honest when I asked her to help me make certain choices where I was indecisive, and I appreciated that very much. Our carpenters were excellent, highly skilled, and efficient. The project manager was there when we had questions and worked hard to coordinate subcontractors to complete the project with minimal downtime. Subcontractors were also great. Unlike another reviewer here, my neighbor just commented that Harth was very good about not disturbing the neighborhood, which he appreciated. Is Harth more expensive than other contractors? Maybe, but in my experience you truly do get what you pay for and what we got is exceptional.

In the middle of trying to understand insurance, inspections, and the many hurdles of rebuilding, I asked several friends and neighbors familiar with the construction business if they knew of a trustworthy contractor. Every one of them told me that no such thing exists. I can say, unequivocally, that they were wrong. Third Story Philly is exactly that--and more. From the very beginning, while mourning our home, our belongings and our beloved animals, Phil Katz stepped in with a level of care and expertise that changed everything for us. His knowledge is both broad and considered, spanning design, permits, zoning, financing, and the many specialty projects that arose during the process. Phil helped us navigate an overwhelming process when we were in a state of unparalleled grief and had truly no idea what we were doing. He also brought with him a network of high-quality vendors and specialists throughout the city, which ensured that every aspect of our project met the highest standards. 3rd Story Philly built us out dream home--a highly unique, fully custom house filled with unusual ideas and one-of-a-kind details. Zach not only understood our vision immediately, but he also executed every single unconventional request with precision and artistry. His craftsmanship elevated our ideas into a finished home that is even more beautiful than we imagined. Throughout the project, both Phil and Zach were unfailingly responsive and present. Every call was answered, every concern was addressed, and every problem that came up was solved with patience and clarity. Their team's work is impeccable, and the end result is a home that is structurally flawless and stunning in its design. They gave us a lifeline with the dedication of true professionals and renewed our faith in the goodness of people. At a time when we felt like we couldn't trust anyone with our best interests, Phil and Zach proved themselves to be people of rare integrity. I would recommend them without hesitation and would happily provide a verbal or written reference to anyone considering a project with them.

They predicted about 12 weeks from demo to completion, and things stayed on schedule. We were impressed that there was rarely downtime.   We hired them to design the space and do the construction. Their design team took our suggestions and put together beautiful plans, which we didn't make too many changes too. They suggested great fixtures, hardware, appliances etc and generally understood what our hopes were and put them into action.  When construction started we had a group chat with the project manager and site supervisor to keep lines of communication open. If we had questions, we could ask them and get answers quickly. We did hope to have more weekly check in meetings with our crew to avoid on the fly decisions, but schedules made that difficult.  Of course no contractor is perfect, and there were a few bumps here and there. But Gardner fox did a beautiful job in our kitchen, and they continue to be responsive when things come up. We would recommend them and use them again.
