I last rented a car from National Car Rental at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG)…read morenearly 7.5 years ago. This review is long overdue. I recently flew into YWG because my round-trip plane ticket was cheaper ($301) versus flying in and out of Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport ($1200). My plan was to fly into YWG and do a seven-hour road trip down to the Twin Cities, similar to what I did when I lived in Minnesota, but shaving off an hour from what I used to do going home to Rochester. With gas fill-ups, it was still cheaper. It was a time-money tradeoff. YWG is a small airport. Most National Car Rentals at airports have Emerald and Executive sets of lanes where you select your car, do a quick registration check-in, and leave. It's not the case here. You need to visit the car rental counter first. National, Alamo, and Enterprise are under the same Enterprise umbrella. I managed to get Jamar at the Alamo counter. He was personable, helpful, and friendly. He found my reservation. He let me know that Winnipeg has even more speed traps and photo radar cameras these days. His mom recently went over the speed limit by 10 km. A camera caught her speed and she had to pay $380. Yikes! We discussed what vehicles were available. I went with an SUV because I like sitting up high, which is a change from driving my beloved Toyota Corolla liftback. I rented a Volkswagen Taos, which I hadn't driven before. I got my keys and headed to the rental lot. I got another nice man there who directed me to aisle 4. I found my rental vehicle. I was pleased with its condition. I put my luggage, backpack, and me into the car. I was off and running. I drove a lot. My final mileage was 2,283 km. I absolutely enjoyed driving this vehicle. It was smooth and quiet. Android Auto worked well with my phone. What do I miss about this vehicle? The heated steering wheel. It's a luxury feature, but it means a lot when the temperature dips and you have a warm, hands-on driving experience. I fuelled this car a number of times. It was straightforward popping the gas panel with a button on the driver side and fuelling on the right side of this vehicle. Returning this vehicle was a breeze. You make a right turn just before the Courtyard Hotel. I got the nicest woman who made sure that I was happy with my rental experience. I returned this vehicle with a full tank of gas. I am fortunate to get a corporate discount renting vehicles with National. I had an excellent experience and am thrilled that my rental had unlimited mileage! (78)

Rep gave me a choice among several vehicles to choose from based on the keys he had in the cabinet. They give you the paperwork, hand you the keys, and tell you where the rental car is parked in the structure. (RED FLAG: WHY DIDN'T THE REP TAKE ME TO THE CAR AND DO A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE CONDITION OF THE VEHICLE? I did my own, and it seemed to match what was already pre-parked on my paperwork). Car: Easy to drive, easy to handle, modern. Return: You park in one of the designated return-car spaces. Someone comes out to inspect the vehicle. The rep pointed out a "dent" to the passenger side frame. He had to point it out to us several times as we could not see it at all. We had to run back and forth to the driver side to compare, and even then, it was not obvious to the naked eye. There was absolutely no way we would've seen that unless the rep knew it was already there, and wanted to pin the damage on us. *Being in Winnipeg for barely 48 hours, and driving from our hotel to a family residence (a few blocks distance between the two destinations), the alleged damage could not have happened when the car was being used by me. The rep at the counter (obviously not even looking at my paperwork yet) started to question me as to how the damage had taken place, and I stated that I was not aware, nor could I see the "damage" they were trying to blame me for. Again, the rep was saying that the damage was not there when I picked up the car and that I should've done a thorough walk-thru and inspection of the vehicle, which I stated that I did do an inspection, and that even now returning the car the "damage" was still not visible to the naked eye. He eventually took a look at my paperwork, saw that I was fully covered for any damages, and his demeanor finally softened. He assured me that I was not going to be charged for the damage, so I told him that as long as the next driver isn't screwed over then whatever. TLDR: Car was fine, but I did NOT appreciate being blamed and accused for damage that was not done by me, they should be more thorough in walking the customer to the car and doing an inspection together. I'd suggest you feel up the car like you feel up your date that you're about to lose your virginity to on prom night. Feel that shit up, every nook and cranny, coz one way or another you're getting screwed.

I had an extremely disappointing and unsafe rental experience with Hertz last week. I upgraded to…read morean $80/day vehicle and was given a Kia. The following day, while driving on the highway in winter conditions, the rear window began malfunctioning and repeatedly went up and down on its own--even though I hadn't touched the windows. I called the Halifax location and spoke with the manager, Jamie, who instructed me to drive the vehicle all the way back to Halifax, despite the fact that I was past Middleton, NS (over 1.5 hours away). I was forced to drive for hours on the highway with the rear window fully down in freezing temperatures. The vibration made highway driving unsafe, and the cold exposure was severe despite having the heat on full blast. What should have been a simple fix turned into over four additional hours of unsafe driving, and I ended up getting sick afterward. When I returned the vehicle, I was initially offered only $30 in compensation, which didn't even cover fuel costs. After pushing back, this was increased to $100--barely covering the rental for the day and not accounting for gas, lost time, safety risks, or the overall ordeal. The replacement vehicle (a Nissan Rogue) was also disappointing. It had a strong unpleasant odor, inconsistent cruise control, and the exterior was extremely dirty--especially the passenger-side windows, which were so caked with dirt that visibility was affected. On top of this, the customer service was extremely poor. I was repeatedly placed on hold for over 30 minutes at a time with no explanation. During these long holds, I could hear staff talking in the background. Each time I would say, "Hello, is anyone there?", someone would suddenly respond and claim the issue had been "resolved," even though nothing had actually changed. It felt as though action was only taken once I spoke up, and even then, no real resolution was provided--just repeated responses without accountability. Overall, this was a very poor experience involving unsafe vehicle conditions, excessive delays, and inadequate customer service. I expected much better from Hertz and would not recommend this location based on my experience.

Thank you for being open late. 12 am…read more Everyone closes early nowadays. I was so happy Hertz was open late. Trying to find a car rental that has pickup in Winnipeg and drop off in Hamilton was an absolute pain. I've never rented from Hertz before this time. First time customer b/c they offered drop off in Burlington Ontario (I think it's called Burlington) which is 15 min away from Hamilton. Anyhow I was just happy to have found a rental place that had this offer and for such a good price for a SUV. Normally I always rent from Enterprise But Enterprise kept coming back with ZERO search returns for my filter options. Now I will be including Hertz in my rental search options going forward. Good Job Hertz. TIP. ask hertz about their gas fill options. With gas prices so high. Right now as we speak. $1.68 (Winnipeg). $1.89 (Vancouver). The Hertz guy told me for about the opportunity to pre authorization for them to fill the tank at $1.60/litre. Even if price goes up. Or drop off in Ontario like I plan to do. Don't fill. Drop it and they will fill at that rate. Normally that would be a laughable offence. Not today haha.
