Marriott hotel room rates in Winnipeg for the middle of February were ridiculously high. My guess is that it was the Louis Riel weekend, which was the perfect opportunity to hike the rates up on tourists.
I went a different route. I used my Marriott Bonvoy points for a two-night stay at this Four Points hotel in the south end of the city. It was the cheapest room rate out of all of them.
I drove in from the Twin Cities. I had no problem doing a u-turn on Pembina Highway and pulling into a fairly close spot from the main entrance. I grabbed all my stuff and rolled my luggage up an L-shaped ramp. I appreciated not using the short set of steps to drag my belongings and me up them.
I had the nicest man at the front desk. He got to my name before I was able to say who I was. It was a nice touch that he was expecting me.
For some reason, my credit card wasn't co-operating with its hold system. He was lenient and said that since I was a platinum elite member, I could use my debit card for the hold. I appreciated it. The hold was seamless. I then sorted my credit card issue, which was more a security feature to prevent fraud.
I got my room cards and walked over to the elevators. You do need to swipe your room card to access any floor higher than the main level. Going down to the main floor doesn't require any card swipe.
This hotel was going through renovations. I barely heard a thing while I stayed here.
My room was on the fifth floor, which was the top floor. I liked how my room was laid out. There were lots of hooks for my jacket, purse, and more. I had a luggage bench that helped me unpack and pack without breaking my back.
The closet had more than enough space and hangers for my clothes. There was a mini fridge next to it with complimentary bottles of water. I am always suspicious of bottled water in my room where you pay an exorbitant amount for a bottle. Nope, bottles of water were free here. Yay!
The alarm clock was modern, with USB ports to charge your electronic devices. I got a king-sized bed that had the perfect firmness. I got a couple of good nights of sleep here. I loved how quiet this hotel was.
The bathroom was clean with lots of towels. The shower had the perfect water pressure, and enough places to store my shampoo and shower puff. The counter was also spacious for me to place my toiletries on it. I liked all the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and liquid soap provided. They were pleasing scent-wise and fully stocked.
I caught up with some Manitoba programming on TV. I enjoyed watching TV from my bed. It was cozy and I felt right at home.
My room had a desk that you pull out from under the TV. I didn't need to use it during my stay.
The first floor has a dedicated room for Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs). I first learned about them when I lived in this city. They are popular. I have never been interested in them, but you see them at bars. It was my first time seeing them at a hotel.
Next to this room is the restaurant. If you are a platinum elite and higher, you get free breakfast. Yes, please! The catch is that your breakfast can't exceed $14.
I got the two $14 breakfasts that were on the menu during my stay:
- Four Points breakfast with over-easy eggs and sausage.
- Three-egg omelette with bacon and mushrooms
I got whole wheat toast and fruit for both. If you don't like fruit, you can get hash browns.
I also got a Diet Pepsi. It seems like on holidays and weekends, it's free. On Tuesday, it was not. So weird.
Both breakfasts were delicious. Everything was done to my liking. I got extra strawberry jam for my toast, which was heavenly. The Diet Pepsi was cold. I got refills.
The dining area was relaxing. There were some renovations happening on Tuesday, but they weren't disruptive.
The best part of my stay was a woman at the front desk. I needed to print out my parking pass for the Manitoba Moose game. I left my printout at home. Ugh!
I asked her if she could print it for me. I sent it to the hotel's e-mail address. She fetched it and headed to her computer. The printer wouldn't work, so she had to troubleshoot a bit. She got it to work. I was extremely thankful for her help. She needs a raise!
I asked if I could get a later checkout time. It's normally noon, but my flight was at 3:45 pm. I got it, but left at 1:30 pm to grab a bite to eat closer to the airport. I had a chat with housekeeping that I was checking out. She was super nice.
The woman the front desk was nice, but it took her forever to figure out how to credit my debit account for the security hold. Ten minutes later, with the help of someone she had called, I got my money deposited into my bank account. Yay!
Parking is free. It's along the front and right side of the hotel when you are facing the main entrance. There were patches of ice that could be hazardous when walking.
I enjoyed my stay here and would return. It was quiet and comfortable.
