My daughter has been attending ShoreNorth for two months. In that time a student has hit her twice…read more Both times she did not apologize and was allowed to continue playing with the group. I brought it to the attention of the staff and the first time the mom was present and did absolutely NOTHING! The second time she whipped her with a plastic snake and we left for the day. She ruins our experience every single week and no one does anything to discipline this child. The co op was supposed to be a fun learning experience for us and it has not been. I dread having to volunteer in the classroom. I thought my daughters safety was a bare minimum. All I asked for was an apology from the little girl so she would know what she did is not acceptable. Now I know why bullying is such a problem today. She didn't even apologize and was allowed back into the classroom. If you want to worry about your child's safety and not hear the teacher over all the disruptions then ShoreNorth is for you! Or if you are raising a bully and want to allow them to have the freedom to do whatever they want, then you found the place for you. I'm extremely disappointed and sad that my daughters safety is not a priority for them. Shame on them for not making a student apologize for physical violence. All they did was make excuses and try to be politically correct.

I didn't intend to join a cooperative preschool (they always sounded so involved, like so much work!) but here I am still a part of Shorenorth with my now 3-year old son and looking forward to attending with his new baby brother next year. I think what hooked me were a few things: I love the play-based model for my son and I love the parent education for me! I am a lifelong lover of learning and ideally, I try to be a parent who is thoughtful about my techniques and approaches. This school gives me the support and headspace to do just that, with a like-minded community of people who are also trying to do the same. We get to learn from great guest speakers regularly and we have support for all our parenting challenges from the instructor and other parents. Now these three years later some of those parents I met long ago in baby class are my good friends, and my son's best buddies are all friends from school. I really love all the parents and children in our class! People are kind, caring, and helpful while still being nonjudgmental. It's a wonderful community to be a part of. Basically, cooperative preschool really is what you make of it. If you resist getting pulled into the community or don't want ANY extra responsibilities, it might not be for you. But if you have space in your life for some fun new friendships - or at least some new people to appreciate, and you are willing to take on some tasks to do your part in helping the school remain the high-quality program that it already is - it might be for you! Last notes: the instructors are top-notch - warm, wise and always prepared. Sometimes I think to myself, "WWTJD?" (What would Teacher Jan do?) to get calm, caring, thoughtful clarity in the moment, and I have a feeling I'll be using that trick for many years to come. The motto of "no bad weather, only bad clothing," means that these kids are encouraged to explore outside every day in an amazing outdoor area at the school. They have no idea how lucky they are! If you are looking for a wonderful cooperative preschool experience, I highly recommend Shorenorth.

From night one, Laura instantly put me at ease. Laura did an absolutely fantastic job of taking care of our little one. She went above and beyond to make sure we all felt comfortable and removed all of the unpredictable variables in the early weeks of having a baby. She washed bottles, pump parts, provided detailed reports each night (that I could look at in real time when I would wake up to pump) and was just a gentle, stable presence in our home. Honestly, I could say that she took care of all of us. As a FTM, having someone around at night who knew babies better than I did ended up being such a huge comfort. She is reliable, consistent, knowledgable and someone who we could (and can still, to this day) consistently count on to show up for us and our family. I would easily recommend Laura to anyone looking for a Night Doula.

It is so awesome to see pics of my two guys building ramps together or cuddling during story time, and my fella really loves seeing our son grow and change along with the other kids in the class. The second thing I adore about our class is the talent: our teacher, Monica, is actually an opera singer, and she brings her beautiful singing to every circle time. Anyone who's heard a group of parents droning along to a song knows what a blessing a gifted teacher can be. Monica also provides a very laid back, attachment friendly style. When my son was scared of one of the circle time routines, she altered the practice to help him adjust, and she came up with clever ideas to help ease him into the routines of preschool. We also have a gifted "parent educator" who doesn't cram education down our throats but offers ad hoc support, tips and understanding. Third pro is the mixed ages. Any kid 1 - 3 years old can enroll. The bigger kids learn sibling skills and get to show off for the littler ones, and the younger ones get to copy bigger kids. It's a fascinating process to observe how fast the little ones learn. Finally, I love that I feel comfortable and at home in our class. The class doesn't operate along gender lines, which makes it feel queer friendly. The other parents who attend with their kids are friendly and open. Our teacher has a lot to do with that atmosphere. Cons? As I see it, this preschool's only flaw is that the co-op is perhaps too laid-back about organizing, which means we hover on the brink of under-enrollment. In short, I couldn't recommend our Saturday preschool more. Even though my own son is close to aging out, I hope the class will continue for many more years because it is so wonderful.

The stars of the show are the wonderful teacher Monica and Parent Educator Glenn. They are immensely wise and talented and gifted teachers. Thanks to the wonderful Monica and Glenn we have beautiful animated singing during circle time, ukulele-playing and sign language instruction too! We look forward to Saturday mornings in preschool because of these great teachers and fun multilingual families. We'll be sad to age out (though it won't be for a while) . . . hopefully by then the age range will be expanded so our son can continue to have fun being part of this community.
