Palmetto Trail
Anne O.

We are always looking for a local trail to get in some scenery. We came across Palmetto Trail and decided to check it out. Buck Hall Recreation Area is a beautiful place to picnic, kayak, boat, or camp. A day pass is $5.00 and seems to be an honor system, as a lot of the area parks are. Not sure of boat or camping fees. This place is not very crowded, seems to be off the beaten path, but gorgeous! The Palmetto Trail is 7 miles and is a one way path. We were looking for a 4 to 5 mile hike - so it meant hiking out, turning around, hiking back. The path is well maintained, and clearly marked. The scenery could have been so awesome had the path followed the water way instead of the woods, but we still had a wonderful morning feeding the mosquitoes....

Buck Hall Recreation Area in Francis Marion National Forest is adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway and near the Cape Rowain Wildlife Refuge and the Center for Birds of Prey. This is a nice place to stay, the camp is clean and very scenic. Recreation.gov claims each site has 50amp power and no water hookups, but every site has 50amp & water. The sites are large and level, there are not too many trees in the RV parking area, so there are no issues with RV height. We will definitely stay here again in the future. This park requires a reservation, and the sites have been full up our entire stay, so book early. You can book a spot online @ recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. The cost is $20 per night for RVs ($10/night with Golden Age Pass or Access Pass), and $15 per night for tent campers ($7.50/night with Golden Age Pass or Access Pass). The bathrooms are clean but the facilities are older and could use a facelift. There is one shower in the women's bathroom, and one shower in the men's room. The shower heads are not that great and are in need of repair. There is warm water, so if you are looking for a hot shower, you will not find it here, but the water is warm enough to be comfortable. All the site are pretty open to each other, if you plan to camp in a tent I would definitely recommend the tent only sites (they are closer to the water and have more trees for privacy. There are hiking trails nearby, a large boat launch (3 boats can launch at the same time), trailer parking for day use, a fishing pier and a very lovely panic area. There are many types of water fowl and all sorts of birds for bird watching.

Awesome campground, especially during the festival of lights! If you're there in the summer, the…read morewaterpark and splash area are open too. Lots of other activities for kids and adults - walking trails, disc golf course, climbing wall, nature course, dog park, fishing dock, and kayak/sup rentals. The campground is well kept and most sites are great. Beware of the ones that share a driveway if you're going it alone (50/51, 78/79, 124/125, etc). The campground map clearly denotes which ones have shared driveways. Also several sites have a sewer/water/electric hookup right on top of the neighboring site pretty much (119 to 118, for example). Those are not well marked on the map. Firewood at the store is hit or miss, so bring your own if you can. Each site does have a picnic table and fire ring, but the picnic tables are on the older side. Lots of trees all the way around, and there are a few interior sites with concrete pads. Bathhouse and showers are newly renovated and very nicely done. For the adventurous folks, there is also a primitive camping area for tenting on the other side of the overflow parking area behind the RV campground. These have raised tent pads, but no water and electric at the sites. There is also an adjacent group camping area frequently used by the boy scout troops. The campground store is very nice and I always end up spending money on trinkets and souvenirs. If you're going to the Festival of Lights, the shops are right across the street from the campground and very easy to walk to. This makes it super easy to buy ornaments before the shops get crowded and get train tickets before they sell out. 4 stars instead of 5 for just a few drawbacks. One, because football season is rough there. No cable, no TVs anywhere in the park to go watch the games, and digital antenna picks up only the most basic channels. The wi-fi at the campground store is good but only if you're standing in the store. Even a few RV spots away, you'll need a satellite with you to get your favorite football games. Also, some of the camping spots within our group needed a little TLC. The ash in the firepit from the previous guest was all the way up to the rim, leaving us to do the cleanup work. Campground staff was zooming around on their golf carts at way too fast speeds, making us nervous with our kids trying to ride their bikes. For the price we paid, it was very good but not great - a hard packed dirt spot with no cable/wi-fi and a sewer line at our neighboor's back door.

Our first experience traveling in an RV. Can't say I would do it again in the near future but…read moreCampgrounds at St. James Island is a wonderful spot. There are wooded spots and more manicured spots for RVs. They also have space for primitive camping, groups, and fully equipped cottages. The staff here is absolutely wonderful. Everyone is friendly and very helpful. F and I arrived late in Friday night, but there is a park ranger available after hours to let you in and guide you to your spot. The evenings are quiet after 10pm. It is family oriented and dog friendly too. We were more interested in getting into Charleston on Sunday and Uber picks up right by the general store all the time. This is really a lovely spot with lots to do.

It's only been open several years. The pool was clean and relaxing, and the staff made us feel very welcome. There are great amenities like a playground, volleyball and basketball courts, and even a dog park and fishing ponds. Very clean bathrooms/showers. It's a great place for families and anyone looking to relax and have fun. Highly recommend!

Super nice RV park. I'm going to go with "Likely nicer than 97% of the RV Resorts you will ever…read morestay at." The place is new, clean, super organized. Easy to pull through. It has one of the best designed traffic flows I have seen. You drive to the back, find your row, take a left and pull into your slot. Look on their web site if this doesn't make sense. It's super easy. Every site is a very flat concrete pad with plenty of room. All roads are asphalt and are in perfect condition. It's the easiest place to get into and out of that I have seen. They have all the expected connections at every site. No cable, but there are more than two dozen channels available via antenna. They pick up your trash. Super nice pool. Golf carts for rent. Places for kids and dogs. The grass is very nicely maintained. The place is secure with a real gate that they give you a card to open. Everything here is first rate. The staff was super nice. We got an Amazon delivery but we're off at Bald Head Island near closing time they called us about it and we said just leave it by the door... someone took the time to bring it to our site! While you are there, definitely take the ferry out to Bald Head Island. It's not far. I definitely recommend this place and honestly will say that it deserves more than five stars.
