This may account for the impeccable and tasteful décor, which I value just as highly as the food in a café - if I want to sit and eat my lunch somewhere it has to be a nice environment. There are a few small, quality pieces of art on display and for sale as well as larger, more generic yet coordinated prints. Interior design aside, the smoothies here are great, as you would hope from a place called The Smoothie Company! Each one is made to order with fresh fruit and there are dairy and non-dairy options. The sandwiches are a good size, leaving you feel full and healthy after a sandwich/smoothie lunch. You get the quality you pay for with both of these. I was pleased to find out they recycle their glass bottles but wasn't surprised as the atmosphere suggests positive ethos. The pot plants on the tables and little washing line on the wall to leave notes or flyers on are features that add to this good feeling.

Don't expect miracles, these hidden gems don't stay secret for long, so come 1pm the queue will still be out the door - just not nearly as push-and-shove-ly as the spots nearby. The added bonuses of extra staff, to take off the pressure, and a cute little side window to collect your order from at such busy times, is a boon indeed. They've a small array of outdoor seating for those intermittent sunny afternoons, and a decent amount of space inside, including a most exciting faux-grass carpet made of plastic. I know it's terribly kitsch, but I'm somewhat of a fan, as it makes the space feel fresh and light. The staff are as cheery as the space, which is lovely, and will help guide you to one of the offerings if you need help - which you might - as there are many options. The whole gamut of the smoothie world is covered, from the naughty-but-tasty, to the milk-based, right through to the purest juices. I had something raspberry and mint based, and it was refreshing and delicious. I came here for a catch up with the lovely Gabrielle, and I wish I could remember which she had, as it also looked marvellous... On this occasion I didn't take a bite, but there's a decent selection of sarnies on offer should you come looking for lunch. All in all, it's a super solid spot for smoothies, and you might even find just that bit extra. Check 'em out!

Their menu changes throughout the week, but everything is guaranteed vegetarian - a rarity in this age of burgers, hot dogs and fried chicken (don't get me wrong, these are some of my favourite items, but it's good to have a break!) They have juices, raw pad thai, vegan sushi, and a hot 'buddha bowl' option. On my visit, the hot option - perfect for the cold wet weather - was a mushroom strogonoff, served with wholegrain rice and steamed kale. I'm not usually a mushroom fan but felt like hey, sometimes you have to take a chance. At £5.50, it was a healthy lunch portion and kept me going through the afternoon. It was packed with mushrooms and plenty of sauce to soak into the rice, and you can also add some seeds if you'd like. I'll be back over the summer I'm sure. Service was really friendly and swift, and I can imagine that, once the sun finally does stick around for a while, the square will become a great place to spend some time.

I'm also not very keen on the consistency of smoothies generally, never has something been less appropriately named (a bit of hyperbole perhaps, but the name doesn't really describe it properly though, does it?) It was with some trepidation then that I visited Mojoes one afternoon whilst walking back to Blundellsands train station and was pleasantly surprised when trying their smoothies. Inside, the shop is a little on the small side but makes good use of its space, offering a pleasant, comfortable environment for you to relax and enjoy a drink or some food. As well as offering a range of delicious smoothies, I was pleased to see they offered alternatives to these, such as fruit juices, milkshakes and hot drinks, in addition to a range of sweet and savoury crepes (not quite as healthy as the smoothies, but a necessary evil in my opinion). Both the drinks and food are reasonably priced considering they use fresh ingredients, meaning a visit to Mojoes leaves you feeling refreshed and (fairly) healthy, depending on your order of course.

It looked quirky, independent, homegrown, interesting, fresh, colourful... Wait a blimmin' minute. How exactly do you pronounce the name? Joo-saffay? J...Oh goodness - well as it happened, when I arrived here to wait for my lovely friend and went up to order the smoothie, I had a lovely chat with the fellow working there. He was in the arduous process of renewing his domain name online and as he read the address out to me, I learned it was indeed... Joooo-kafé. It isn't exclusively for... It's for anyone and everyone, and in the times I've been there thus far, I've seen kids as young as 7 months and folks as old as 70, alongside disgruntled teenagers, all slurping up their smoothies. Ah, Lancaster. The price is right here, and I've enjoyed all my visits. The other half even spotted their quality when he realised they had one of the most expensive kinds of blender you can buy... in duplicate. Perhaps even triplicate. This place is as family friendly as it gets, from the big squishy beanbags in the corner to the chalkboard kids can draw on, to free WiFi and even a laptop to play on if you haven't your own, to a funky soundtrack, colourful environment and massive variety of beverages. You can get everything here - healthy smoothies, indulgent milkshakes and everything in between. I had a fruity pulpy beverage thickened with fat-free froyo upon my first visit, and Alexa had tea and toast, proving they cater to any mood. Yup, there's food here too. Another time I brought the Betrothed, and he had a Crunchy Nut milkshake. Nope, not a Crunchie milkshake. A Crunchy Nut Cornflake milkshake. I can only liken it to what I'd imagine Momofoku Milk Bar's cereal milk to taste like, but it was as close to a breakfast shake as you could imagine. Drinks you can chew. Now if Lancaster gets itself a Bubble Tea joint, my world will be complete!

I like making my own at home and I often pretend to myself that start making some to take to work with me...I know I never will. But that's when places like this come in handy! Smoothies is in the Arndale markets, right on the edge, you can't miss it and you really shouldn't, it's a good place for you to re-fuel after (or during) a hard days shopping! My personal favourite has to be the Strawberry Peach one, so fruity! They have a stupid amount of different ones to choose from though and they'll make anything you suggest, every smoothie is blended from fresh fruit right in front of your eyes. They also do energy booster 'hits' but I've always been too scared to try them. Maybe one day!

I'd eat a bowlful of fresh pineapple as enthusiastically as I'd munch some Skittles in the cinema. And I'd slurp a smoothie with as much gusto as a chocolate milkshake. Well, I've found my smoothie temple. 98% fat free frozen yoghurt and fruit. That's all that goes into these bad boys, served up by smiley and friendly people who are more than happy to help you out with your five a day. And goodness me, do they taste like an indulgent treat. My medium sized Pineapple Blush, a simple blend of raspberry and pineapple, felt like a dessert, and at less than £3 it was a bargain too! In the Arndale Food Market as well. Where else? Now I know exactly where to get my frozen fruit fix while I'm shopping in the sales. There are tons of flavour combinations including the Cobana, which blends together pineapple, coconut milk and banana. And it's stumbling distance from my house. What could be better to wean you off your summer cocktails into a full on detox? Guilt-free deliciousness. What more could you ask...
