It has been several years since I completed the program, yet I have many memories, both of friendships formed by the experience, and the frustrating battles with the college's staff and administration. The enrollment experience was very positive and set the stage well for entering this exciting new chapter. However, orientation was disappointing, with Phyllis T, our guide, lacking the charisma to handle questions and objections, and oddly offering up a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips as a welcome snack. One bag of chocolate chips, like you'd use for baking cookies, as a snack. To adults. Enrolling in a Master's Degree program. You can't make this stuff up! As the program wore on, we encountered sub-par facilities (the first room for our cohort had an ant problem and a very unpredictable thermostat which made dressing comfortably for class after a day at work impossible) and a mixture of excellent instructions offset by some truly awful "phoning it in" ones who were clearly looking for some extra cash, not advancing future leaders. The icing on the cake was being told that because our program concluded in June, we were unable to participate in the May ceremony, despite that undergraduate students in a similar situation were allowed this honor. We must wait for the December ceremony, a full six months past the finale of our educational journey. No explanation was given beyond it being "school policy." Despite all that, I did learn a significant amount during the 2.5 year program and still keep in contact with some of my classmates. Looking back I often wonder how I balanced work and school, and pat myself on the back for my time-management skills!

The faculty couldn't care less about their students. The school wants to appear big, bold, and strict with these new rules, but they've just gotten weaker. They make you walk six miles to raise money for stuff that you might not even do. There is no air con in the entire school except for the administration offices where no students are. My child was around 2.5 when starting his first "school" experience here. He was part time (3 hours in the morning) and attended maybe a total of 5 or 6 school days before they told me they needed to unenroll him. The reasoning was regarding his emotional regulation. I could definitely see that he was having a hard time with emotional regulation - even at home. They also advised me to get him evaluated. I have no issues with getting my son help that he needs, but it did shock me to have such a strong response after barely knowing him and without giving him a chance to acclimate to a new environment. I asked for specific things that happened to understand what he was doing exactly that would result in him being unenrolled and the examples they gave were like "running around" and "struggling with the routine". I thought they were going to tell me he physically hurt someone or himself or that he was destructive to the classroom. I took time to reflect on their comments and spoke to his doctor. He did not have concerns and said that at 2.5 we cannot expect toddlers to have a grasp on their emotional regulation yet. Since this experience, he has now been in different schools where he is thriving. It's not due to smaller class ratios - the school he is in now has the same ratio and he is so happy to go to every day. I'm not sure what was going on at North Shore that made him so distressed. I believe if they gave him the opportunity to adjust he could have done well there too. Unfortunately, I think they only accept specific types of children that can follow very rigid routines. I chose a Montessori school because I thought the philosophy was to follow a child's lead as opposed to rigidity. I definitely acknowledge that my child was having a harder time managing his emotions (especially at that age), but parents of toddlers who are still learning how to regulate emotions and need more fluidity to just be a kid should be aware of this before enrolling. I also want to note that I find it extremely odd that you can't find reviews on this school. Google reviews are turned off, and there are only 2 posts on Facebook.

His particular flavor of AuDHD became more and more apparent, and it became increasingly clear that Glendale Heights possibly couldn't meet his needs anymore. Which is reasonable! So, after a number of days of bypassing their own "three strikes" policies and forcing us to pick him up early after a single minor incident (still charging us the full rate, mind you), they unceremoniously kicked him out without warning us that we were anywhere close to that possibly happening. Which, ok, I get from their perspective and communication could have been better - BUT. The reason this is a 1-star review and I won't recommend Glendale Heights to any other parents? Is because, for that last week that he was allowed to attend, it seems that he was told that he was being kicked out and it was _his_ fault, and not Glendale Heights' inability to accommodate his needs. For weeks, we had a 2-year-old constantly melting down every time he realized he did something wrong and _physically beating himself up_ for it. Who blames a 2-year-old like that? Who tells a 2-year-old they're a bad kid? We will forever regret sending our child to Glendale Heights.
