On a last day without rain in what is considered the last clear weekday in the Autumn in San Francisco before the rain and winter sets in on Sunday I went on a stroll to one of the few villages in city. In this village there are lots of shops and restaurants. One thing I did notice is this village had two grocery stores on the same block. One grocery store is over 70 years old and the other over 60 years old. One of these grocery stores has a neighborhood charm which feels a bit vintage. It's called Bryan's Grocery. The Laurel Village in Laurel Heights neighborhood in San Francisco has lots of new places but Bryan's Grocery is neighborhood classic and favorite to buy groceries and also to grab drinks. Inside you will see a meat market along with aisles of drinks and food. There is also fresh produce like fruits and vegetables. You will feel transported to the past of old San Francisco once you roam the store. A good place to shop if you are in Laurel Village. Go to Laurel Village for a "bite " and also pick up some food to bring at that holiday party "invite " this place only opens in the day and evening but not at "night" it's at the Laurel Village in neighborhood of "Laurel Height" It's a place which is worth "trying" which has some beef available and chicken available for "frying" and lots of good food worth "buying" at a grocery store called "Bryan" read more

I've been going to Bryan's since I moved to SF in1981 and lived near Laurel Village. It reminds me of smaller markets in NYC where I grew up. Not the gigantic supermarkets, if that's what you want. But if I want top produce, meats and fish, I still find that quality and customer service at places like Bryan's (and Cal-Mart), both in Laurel Village. It's not inexpensive but the quality of the fish and meats are the best you'll find. It's like what a Butcher Shop and the Fishmonger's Shop were a long time ago. Bryan's still has the best quality including the folks behind the counters will help you find what you want or if you want to try something new, and if you ask questions, they'll be happy to give you cooking tips if you want to do something differently or just to remind you what you knew before. If you want something specialized that they don't have because they don't sell enough X or Y, they'll generally have it special ordered for you within a day or two. The produce section with vegetables and fruit is also top quality. I might pay more but they last in the refrigerator twice the time that I buy at the larger supermarkets elsewhere. That is saving you money because it doesn't go bad as quickly as the produce you buy at supermarkets. I wish it wasn't so, but a lot of my testing has proven it year after year. Some of the people behind the counters have been there for many years and they're all friendly, courteous and extremely knowledgeable. They are very nice people and are well trained about what they sell you and making your shopping experience a pleasure. And when you cook it for your family and friends you know you are cooking like you would in Italy, France and other countries: always start with the best quality you can get and cook it simply to bring out the quality of the food. Since we all need to be smart about managing the cost of our shopping, you can get your other canned and boxed goods, etc., somewhere cheaper where you're getting the same things no matter where you go. If you are willing to go to two markets in that way, you'll get more bang for your money. It's a nicer way for me to shop for food. The ambiance (or vibe) is definitely worth shopping here. read more

The owner even helped my husband pick the perfect cheeses from a huge and diverse selection from different countries. We were on the hunt for a certain French cheese. For a small, single store market Bryan's caters to the upscale crowd. There's a meat/butcher and seafood counter. Regulars are greeted by name! The shelves are super well-kept. You can find most things that you're going to need. The standout for me is their floral section. It's in the back (parking area side). The buyer of flowers has an eye for beauty. 'Cause he knows his customers are looking for this. If i had to buy a bouquet of flowers want to arrange a floral display myself, I'll come to Bryan's. Better check out service - they are selective as to who they bag groceries for. I typically bag my own if I can, but it's part of the service and they need to improve in this department. When asked recently if they bag, they replied "sometimes". I am a regular shopper here at least a few times a week and disappointed with this recent lack of service and have been shopping here for several years. read more

I go to Bryan's two or three times a week to purchase fish. Their prices are high but the quality is very good and the staff have always been very good I went there this afternoon just before they closed and they had a big sale on local halibut at $19,99 a bound which is real bargain. I had not seen the man I waited on me and apparently he was new. I was in a hurry to get out when I was leaving. When I got home I found I had been charged $29.99 a pound for sea bass. We eat as lot fish but never eat sea bass either at home or when we go out to eat. I am an eighty-three year old man and fins this very disconcerting . I hope when I contact them tomorrow that things will get straightened out. I no longer drive so I may have to take muni. read more

Good products, but unclear on the mangement team at the butcher counter. We put a phone pre- order in for a pick up of a 4 lb beef tenderloin tied, and when we arrive the butcher looks through 5 sheets of paper for the order and then asks what we want. He goes in the back to make one up and then tells us it doesn't need to be tied,(or he didn't feel like tying it) it will cook even without tying it. Third time this has happened with various different orders. One gets the feeling most of the workers there have one eye on their retirement calendar. read more

Bryan's is an upscale grocery store. I wandered in one day on my way back from an appointment in the neighborhood. Cal-mart just isn't cutting it anymore and I needed to pick up a few items for baking. The store is incredibly clean and organized. Items look like they are carefully plucked and placed for your shopping pleasure, so I had no problem finding what I needed and more. The meat department looked like a chef's dream, but I was on a mission for baking ingredients and supplies (wine to drink while baking). The staff was super helpful and very nice. Since I love to cook, I will definitely use Bryan's as a resource in the future, they seem to have a cut above everyone else and deliver on quality. read more

Good quality meats and vegetables. Prepared foods can be hit or miss (mac and cheese had no flavor). However, the sandwiches are all great; one of the best turkey sandwiches ever. There is not a way to give feedback to the Bryan's Grocery staff on their website so I am going to post on Yelp. I am so grateful to this store for the many family holiday meals that I hosted over the years. We would wait in a long line to pick up the reserved meats and seafood for our memorable family celebrations. It is still a go-to destination to find specialty and delicious deli items (bean and pasta salads), chocolates, and having butchers on the premises. It is a lovely, well-appointed grocery store and shelves are always well-stocked even during the pandemic. The staff at the check-out lines was first-rate and long-time employees who knew regular customers. I went to high school with one who has since retired. Unfortunately, the last dozen times I went to Bryan's, the staff at the check-out lines were dismissive and rude and, as a person of color, it was blatantly obvious. Sadly, it appears that the long-time employees have moved on. With this post, I am asking Bryan's to remind their staff to treat everyone the same as you would like to be treated. The quality of your products is first-rate but, for some of us, the experience is one star. Side note: I will send a letter to them via post. My wife purchased $80 worth of stew meat at Bryan's today. She paid a high price of $14 a pound and asked for large lean chunks of meat. What she got was outrageous: over a pound of fat which had to be laboriously cut from the chunks of meat. It took almost an hour of work. Usually butchers minimize fat on the stew meat they sell. When we called to complain, the butcher said that he thought we wanted fat in the meat. And he said, "How else would you cut the meat to avoid the fat?" We've been buying stew meat for 30 years; this is not how it usually comes. We thought Bryan's was selling a premium product, but we were very wrong. read more

Came here years ago to get some kobe (style) beef. I got a ribeye and it was decent. This time, they had both ribeye (good) and flatiron (HFS!!!!). Their kobe flatiron was one of the best (if not THE best) steaks I've ever bought in my life. Like 60% marbling, the way kobe is supposed to be. Nice work. The attached grocery store has a pretty great selection too. UPDATE (Dec 2013): I came again to see if they had kobe beef, and boy did they ever. $125 a pound for NY strip, and the uncut piece even had the wagyu association certification including birth certificate and registration number of the cow. (Yes, I looked it up online.) If you are a skeptic on imported kobe beef like me, you'll want to check out the photo I'm attaching of this steak... seeing is believing! UPDATE (March 2017): Thank you for all the votes and compliments! By popular demand, here's how I cook my kobe beef: Start with a 3/4" thick steak. Yes, it will probably be frozen, but that's OK. You can defrost it in the frig overnight. To prepare: - Stainless / aluminum fry pan (mine is All Clad) - Add about a tablespoon of vegetable oil to pan. You won't need more. - Set gas heat to "medium looking" which was 4.5 out of 6 units on my stove, allow pan to heat. Keep an eye on the oil to make sure it's not smoking. (If it gets close, it will start to skin over and discolor.) - Cut beef into 3/4" by 3/4" by 3" "sticks" of meat - Sprinkle kosher salt and freshly cracked pepper on beef. Press into meat to ensure adhesion. - Cook beef as follows: 90 sec first side, 90 sec opposite side, 30 sec next side, 30 sec next side. There will be spatter! Make sure to hold a screen (or loose fitting lid) over the pan to prevent oil from burning you and messing your stove. When turning beef, the just-cooked side should be golden but not brown or black. - Plate and serve. read more

Maybe some shoppers would not mind paying for overpriced groceries, but my main problem with Bryan's is several of their prepared items in containers (salads, pastas, soups, etc.) do not have expiration dates. I'm not sure if this is up to SF food codes. Also, I noticed that many regular packaged items do not list the price on the shelf or the item itself. I will have to say that the deli does have some good options. read more

Absolutely HORRIBLE service! I was shopping with my grandma, who can't walk fast and well. We came into tje store 10-15 minutes before closing time to do some really quick shopping since we were having lunch at the latin restaurant a few doors down. (Amazing food & service by the way) Anyways, we go inside and begin to shop quickly. We pick out a lot of expensive produce such a nice cheese, ground veal and other great products. A few minutes into our shopping, as we leave the meat section and go to the cheese section, a woman RUNS up to me and asks me if she can start ringing me up (in the rudest attitude ever. she had long grey curly hair and glasses and was SO SO rude.) I don't reply and look at my grandma and after a seconds of thinking, I say alright and the lady GRABS the basket out of my hands. I continue to walk around. A few minutes after, she tells me they're closing (before their closing time ) and tells me to finish shopping and start paying. Our bill comes up to 160$, splendid! We pay and start walking to the door. The woman doesn't even say anything, not even thank you or goodbye (after we spent 160$ ) We start walking to the door and without even looking up at us, she starts yelling: THAT WAY! (in a horribly rude tone) and at this point i'm not very happy and I answer: oh that way? and she doesn't even look up (she's counting money) and motions her hand super rudely towards the back door which was accord the entire store. (keep in mind, my grandma can't walk to well and the lady saw that she couldn't) ANYWAYS, the ABSOLUTE WORST service. The other employees were okay, and the guys working at the meat section were super nice. I will call the store and ask to speak with someone so they know how their employees treat costumers! Don't go to this store unless you really have no other options and make sure the lady with long grey and curly hair is not there! The produce selection was very good though. read more

The overpriced and overcooked food as I never had before. I've tried their $11 sandwiches, they are bland. So I'd gave an opportunity to their food to go and, I've choosed Moussaka, since I'm Greek... BUMMER they need to change the fake moussaka or simply call it "meat cake". during christmas shopping december 19 i stopped in to purchase some items and after exiting i looked at my receipt and i saw that i had been overcharged $2 on one item. the cashier at first insisted the amount she had hand entered was correct. after she inspected the printed shelf price label she still insisted that her price entry was correct but did refund my credit card with no apology just attitude. she must have learned how to displease customers from her supervisor whose "apology" was "i'm sorry you're having a bad day" and inappropriately touched my arm. i was actually having an enjoyable day and told her so and added " i just don't like to be overcharged $2 on an item and have the staff act as if overcharging is no big deal. read more

I'm sympathetic to needing to pay the rent and that it costs a lot of money to rent a space, but I just can't economically justify shopping here. $13 for a pint of chicken salad? $10 for a pint of potato salad? Bryan's looks good. Bryan's smells good. Bryan's feels good. It sounds like I'm describing a car for a reason. Bryan's is more showroom than grocery store. It's uber clean, & the goods displayed look so good they border on pristine. I've actually dragged friends in here before just to show them the meat, fish, & the deli. The meat is beautiful. I've never called meat beautiful before. Basically, if you're here, then you are at the Neiman Marcus of meat in SF. Dry aged wagyu beef. Yes, it is beautiful. And, it's about $125 a pound. I imagine it would be mighty nice to live in a world where I could afford to eat meat that costs $125 a pound on the regular, but I'm not quite there yet. Sometimes I'm afraid to even admit how much I spend at Starbucks a month. No joke. It's not just the meat, fish, & deli cases that get me. I always make a point to pause & salivate at the baked goods here, too. Ok, ok. I do that everywhere. I've never encountered anything other than service w a smile. I honestly believe the staff are too happy being surrounded by all this food bliss to be in a bad mood. The quality is just unbeatable. The inventory looks, & is, impeccable. i agree that some of the check out stocking personal could be better, "do you have...?" "yea over there." i sort of like the put down what you are doing and help me find it approach. Without it I give up and don't buy anything. That said, this place is beyond exceptional; there is not a product on their shelfs that you would not have in your pantry if you had a pantry the size if a shipping container. Meat and Fish departments are works of art; i have walked through just to look while waiting for a friend at an adjoining store. I went to Bryan's this morning to shop for fresh fish and got on line half an hour prior to there 9 AM opening. That grocery is one of the few locations that has a supply of fresh fish. Staff said to line up and I was the first of a group. Entered the store to purchase fish and was surrounded by other shoppers who had NO regard for safe distancing. I was forced to remind several shoppers to keep a safe distance. The staff and managers of Bryans made no attempt to remind shoppers to keep safe by asking that a 6 foot distance be kept. I felt very unsafe and it is clear to me that the Owners at Bryan's are ONLY interested in profit and have NO interest in protecting staff or the people that shop there. Be Warned that this is NOT a safe place to shop. Avoid shopping at Bryan's where profit takes top shelf over safety from Virus infection. read more

This place is stupid expensive. I understand it being upscale when buying high quality meats or seafood, but name-brand items are marked up way too high. Feels less like neighborhood store, and more like you're being ripped off. I get the cost of living in SF is high, but prices 20-30% higher than whole foods? One bell pepper cost $5. That's insane. We bought a normal amount of produce, 6 pack of beer, one bottle of medium-priced wine and our total cost was: $130, when it should've been $60. No meat!! The only thing I don't like about this market is the owner who puts his profit margin above health and safety. He can't bother to put out wipes for customers or glass barriers for his employees. You would think that for the outrageous prices he charges he could do his part in preventing the spread of the Coronavirus, like all his competitors have done. The meats, seafood and produce are all consistently good. The employees are wonderful. I have been doing more of my upscale shopping here for 20 plus years. My last visit to Bryans was the day before our shelter in place was mandated. I was shocked to find no sanitary wipes. When I asked I was told they ran out! I went to CalMart immegustekyvaftercthstvabd they were stocked with wipes and had people cleaning the carts. Much as I love Bryan's I have not been back. Maybe because if the upscale clientele, they believe they are immune for the virus! I'm not. I will phone them on Monday and ask for their updated safety precautions before I even think of returning. read more

High-priced, compact grocery store gets the yays for the meats, fresh veggies, and deli case offerings. I also bought fresh rosemary with the biggest leaves I have ever seen in my life! Veggies looked as fresh as can be. And I came here for lamb chops but I had to restrain the pork hunter in me cuz the pig chops were looking amazing as well. I had a Middle Eastern grocery list to fulfill and I suppose that I should have gone to a more specialty store, but I was able to find suitable substitutes here and there. I was kind of hoping to find some unique food gems in this store in the dairy and dry goods aisles, but I didn't. That's more of a note than a complaint. Next time, though, I think I will ditch the cooking idea and take the ready-made stuff home. read more

I have been shopping at Bryan's for almost 20 years. I usually love he market. The meat and fish are top notch and the the service is excellent. However, when I recently shopped here during the current shelter-in place period, I was quite appalled. Unlike other markets, they do not provide any control as to how many people enter. The small entrance area in front of the fish counter had at least 10 customers milling about, the store was crowded, especially with elderly people. There was no distancing at the cashiers registers either. They do not provide sanitary wipes and make no effort to clean either shopping baskets or the credit card payment terminals. I would stay away as long as this virus situation is still ongoing. read more

Be aware! Shady practice. We ordered several whole King Salmon on Saturday and on the website it said an average 11LB fish for a price at $80. But in the afternoon they not only changed the price to $100 but also reduced the average weight to 9LB. When we picked up the fish, 1 fish is at 9 LB, another 6 fish are from 6-9 LBs.
