I can't imagine a better hotel to stay in in Oxford! Although 'hotel' might be a little inaccurate…read more- this place is more of an inn or b&b. The location can't be any more central - down a tiny alley, right on top of the Turf Tavern and just around the corner from the Bodleian and Trinity College, Bath Place really is right in the heart of Oxford. Booking is a bit of a pain - like many smaller English hotels, they prefer that you book by phone, which is less than ideal when you have to pay international calling rates, but that's just a small hiccup. We arrived a bit later than anticipated due to some car trouble, but the hotel was perfectly accommodating. We were greeted by the receptionist and two friendly terriers, and shown to our room. I'd requested room 12 specifically because it's one of their few rooms with two beds, and it was perfectly lovely, but not for the mobility-limited. It's up a narrow, winding flight of stairs and there's no lift, so anyone who might have issues climbing stairs or those with giant luggage might struggle. We didn't mind, and had the top floor of the cottage to ourselves with a view of the bell tower and a pretty back garden. The room was quite spacious, especially for an historic property, and well appointed with a dresser, vanity, and mini-bar complete with tea and coffee fixings. The bath, although lacking a shower, had a generously-sized tub and a heated towel rail, which I was supremely excited about. We had a good night's sleep, uninterrupted by Turf revelers - with the windows closed, we couldn't hear a thing, although I imagine it might be different in the summer - and in the morning availed ourselves of the breakfast buffet. Breakfast is included in the room fee, and the buffet spread wasn't lacking. Meat and cheese, fruit, juice, cereal, yogurt, and tiny glass jars of jam and honey. Fresh bread and warm croissants were brought to our table, as well as a tiny French press of coffee made to order. There was also an option to order additional hot items like eggs or beans on toast, which we didn't bother with as the buffet was plenty. Although checkout was at 11am, we were able to leave our luggage at reception until our train later that afternoon while we explored the town. The room fee was very reasonable, especially considering the historic nature of the property, the central location, and the wonderful breakfast. I can't wait to return to Oxford and stay here again!

We booked in for a week on our next visit to Oxford. What a lovely place to stay. Our room was well appointed and furnished, the breakfasts filling and tasty, the bar area very welcoming. What a great place to stay. Come enjoy!

I stayed for two nights at The Buttery Hotel in late April 2015. My third-floor room facing the…read morerear of the hotel was clean and quiet with good hotel-quality furniture. The hotel itself was very clean and well-presented. The bathroom was also very clean and well supplied with fresh towels each day. You may want to ask at the front desk about how the shower nozzles work; they were a bit strange for those of us used to American plumbing fixtures. If you are staying here, you should note that there is no lift, so I had to haul my bag up several flights of stairs. They may offer porter service, but I usually just manhandle my bag to where it should go. They offered a free breakfast, which was enjoyable for what was offered. I usually just have coffee and fruit in the morning, so if you are looking for an elaborate breakfast this service may not give you enough. The wifi worked well enough in my upper level room. I thought for the price offered and the location--right next to the most busy corner of Oxford--the Buttery was a very good choice of accomodations. I was not there on a weekend, but I remember how unbelievably quiet it was for almost all of the night, and I kept the windows open to enjoy the outside air. I would stay there again when I next visit Oxford, and would recommend The Buttery to anyone looking for a good hotel in the downtown area.

Note: I only give out 5 stars to surprisingly EXCEPTIONAL, best-in-class establishments…read more My wife and I spent our honeymoon in the UK. We chose this establishment for the one night we were planning to stay in Oxford. This property has the best location of any hotel or bed & breakfast in the immediate area. It's right on Broad street almost smack dab in the middle of town. Frankly, the location can't be beat. We stayed in a remarkably average room. The bed wasn't very comfortable, the television had very poor reception and limited channels and the bathroom was VERY oddly designed; we had to dangerously climb onto a polished marble "step" to enter the raised bathtub area. Again, the saving grace for this property is its wonderful location. Also, the complimentary breakfast is delicious and hearty. To my knowledge, this property does not have an elevator available for guest use, so be prepared to begrudgingly carry heavy suitcases up a steep flight of stairs to the reception area, and then possibly up more steps to your room. Pleasingly, all the staff we encountered were friendly and accommodating. However, after dark, the area has a generally seedy feeling to it, with dim lighting and sketchy characters lurking about. I definitely recommend this property to anyone planning to stay overnight in Oxford. Third time's a charm: the location of this establishment is IDEAL.

nice place to stay, I don't think I would call it a hotel...., not sure correct name for this type…read moreof establishment; why not a "hotel", well this is just a building with whatever number of rooms they have (8, 10.. or a bit more, probably not) and a check-in happens across the street in a cafe/bar place, at one of the tables with a laptop on it. Parking situation is even worse; you can't park on a street because it is a residential neighborhood and have to have a permit, fee for not having one is €50, "hotel" has few invisible parking spots in front of one of the buildings that people have to park as close as posible to the building and most likely most that can fit is 3 cars..., then there are three more parking spots in back of a building that is down the street (spots being rented by hotel from some other homeowner..., but those spots are extremely difficult to get in as the width of the driveway is slightly wider then regular car and parking spots are barely same and there is barely any room to maneuver.. building is brick so if you touch a car (rental assumed) there will definitely be a damage (scrape)... all these parking issues can be resolved if you drive a mini copper or something similar. There is paid parking in town that's about 10 minutes away (walking) for a hefty price Rooms are very small but very cute...; king size bed, good size refrigerator, microwave, desk, air conditioner....TV (cable), internet in room... as mentioned earlier, town (Oxford) about 10 minutes away walking, nice beautiful walk... there are at least 2 grocery stores (Testo, Salisbury), and bunch of cafes and other establishments... grocery stores stay open till 10 or 11 pm, others close at 9 or before 10pm streets do drive to hotel are super small and on few streets cars parked on left and right and barely one car can fit in between but somehow it is a 2-way street... this reminds me more of a "bed-and-breakfast" rather than hotel... breakfast they have in cafe building for €12, which is I think is a bit high but for area that's normal I guess. in room I got there was no bathtub but a shower (that's ok); bathroom reminds of "motel-6" though.... but mini kitchen area and desk are nice!!! there's even an ironing board... walls seem to be very thin as can hear easily neighbor Overall me and wife liked this place and probably will come back!!!

We booked a deluxe double bed room with 2 doubles for a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children. Refrigerator with free fresh milk and bottles of water (both sparkling and flat). Very fast internet. Comfy beds and very quiet although our room was next to the street. Strong pressure shower and thick toilet paper. Worth every penny booking the business direct rate which includes free parking, full English/continental breakfast, £20 food credit at cafe ethos, early checkin at 2pm and late checkout at 1pm and an Oxford city card that includes a 10% discount to Oxford castle and many more. Can park in front of the cafe or there's a private lot behind the cafe. If you have a midsize car or suv, it might be difficult for you to park in the back. Staff doesn't always pick up the phone but if you stop by the cafe, they will get a hold of the front desk staff for you. We used the food credit to get 2 pizzas at the cafe. Pizzas were quite yummy! Breakfast had a nice spread of continental buffet and made to order items. Easy 15 min walk to city center. Would stay again!
