Kelly came highly recommended from friends, neighbors, and our mortgage lender. Having that many people from different social circles recommend her, we knew she must be good. "Good" is an understatement. From the first time we spoke with Kelly on the phone, we absolutely loved her. Her excellent communication skills were the initial draw, but her willingness to listen, hear, and understand what we were thinking and feeling is what made us know she was the perfect fit for us. Kelly is always honest, whether it was or was not what we wanted to hear; always hustling for us, going above and beyond whenever possible; always being a team player, keeping us and her team on the same page so there was always someone we could get ahold of and rely on to work on our behalf; all while being a positive, kind-hearted, respectful, well-spoken, and a highly-educated realtor. This review has been long overdue and is intended to help first-time home buyers. In short, Thea Velic was the worst real estate nightmare that happened to us. We contacted Kelly Brown Realty and they assigned us Thea. Thea from the start was understandably busy, but she never took any time out to explain the home buying process. Instead, she asked us to "have a feel" of the homes we like and that she would explain the process on the fly. Looking back now that was where things went wrong. It so happened that we ended up liking a home on our first showing. To make things worse, this particular home was on the market for over 100 days. After expressing our interest in the house, Thea said the seller had multiple offers (which was super fishy given that it was in the market for so many months in a seller's market) and you need to write your offer by this afternoon. Completely clueless about the process, and feeling extremely rushed and pressured into buying this home, we had many questions which needed to be answered. She kept sending texts like "you have two hours left to write your offer" and kept sending us these reminders every half hour. Finally, even though we were kept in the dark, we decided to trust Thea and put in our offer. We still don't know exactly what happened and why, but the minute we said we wanted to put in the offer, she sent out this text saying that "she could not answer our questions and will be no longer working with us" and that was it. No apologies, no contact. Two hours later, we were contacted by some other Realtor who wasn't even part of the Kelly Brown team saying she is taking over as our Realtor. She was kind enough to explain the process to us over the phone , but we decided not to continue with her because of the bitter experience with Thea. This whole incident I narrated above was still not the worst thing that we thought had happened to us. We were told we qualify for an FHA loan via Thea's Financer. However, when we finally sat down with our new realtor and gave him all our details, he immediately told us that we would qualify for a conventional loan and he was right! We qualified for a conventional loan. Although we were thrilled to know this, it cost us another hard-hit credit pull. It was only then we realized how much knowledge Thea lacked because we remember sharing the same details with her and she was quick to brush it off saying "it's not her department" and she gave us her financer's number to contact. Had she not ditched us, we would be still worrying about the appraiser calling out chipping paint in the basement, losing out homes in a competitive seller's market and probably still looking for a home. We went from being super worried to being confident, from losing offers via FHA loan to winning an 8bhk via conventional. I wanted to write this review so that it could benefit at least someone out there and hopefully not have to go through the pain and the chaos like we did with Thea. The only thing I would tell first-time buyers is to trust your gut, the vibe you get with your realtor and not just the reviews on google and Zillow. When Thea ditched us, we started researching extensively for a new realtor and it was hard to shortlist one because almost all realtors have 5-star reviews. It is so imperative to make sure you sit down with realtors and set expectations and those expectations are met. If they do not have the time to do so, you simply have to find someone who does, because, at the end of the day, you are not paying anything out of your pocket to the Realtor, the seller pays them approx. 3% of the house selling price. Please do not rush into anything and sign contracts with any realtor until you are completely confident working with them. Do make sure your Realtor explains the entire process before actually jumping onto the MLS and shortlisting homes, shop around for the best loan options instead of trusting one. My husband and I hired Kelly Brown for the simultaneous sale of our then current home, and purchase of our new home. During the first phase of our home sale, everything ran smooth. Kelly brought in a great photographer who took amazing photos. We agreed on a listing price and moved forward. From the beginning, my husband and I were clear with Kelly about our terms for selling the house. We received a full-ask offer within seven days and went into the inspection phase. Upon receipt of the inspection report, Kelly failed to adequately read and understand the report's findings. Kelly instructed us to update our Seller Disclosures since we now had "house issues", which we did not, and the report clearly stated that. Subsequently, Kelly admitted, in writing, that she was "hurried" and "did not sufficiently read" and understand the inspection report. Through multiple phone conversation between me, my husband, and Kelly, I began to realize that Kelly was talking in circles and intentionally trying to confuse us. At that moment, things started to feel uncomfortable. Kelly continued to push back on us to make repairs to our house that we were clear we weren't doing. In the spirit of full disclosure, our house was barely five years old, post build. We repeatedly told Kelly that if our terms didn't suit the potential buyers, we were 100% fine with them walking away. Kelly continued to persist and pressure us into making these repairs. When we resisted and said no to any repairs, Kelly took it one step further and forcefully offered to pay for the repairs out of her own pocket. We continued to hear "I'm doing everything I can to keep this together for you guys". It was clear that Kelly was more concerned about making the sale, than listening to our concerns. Through several more phone conversations, it became evident that Kelly was misleading us on what was being communicated to the buyer's agent and back to us. At that point, we felt that Kelly was no longer working in our best interest, and I requested that going forward, all communication was to be in writing. On 5/2/18 we found out our closing date was set for 6/7/18. During this time, Kelly and I exchanged 14 emails, with Kelly never mentioning she wouldn't be at our closing. On 6/4, three days prior to closing, we received an email from Kelly stating that she was going out of town and would not attend our closing to represent us. Kelly's email stated that she would be available via phone to answer any questions that may come up. On the morning of the closing, multiple emails were exchanged between me and Kelly. Upon arrival at the Title company at 1pm for losing, we were asked to go to a different room and were told that we were being separated from the buyers. My husband and I were speechless at what was happening. I asked our title rep why we were being separated and was told that was at the request of Kelly Brown. My husband and I felt SO uncomfortable. We were mortified at the message this was sending to the buyers. I insisted that this was inappropriate and that I wanted to meet the buyers of our house. I wanted the buyers to know how much we loved this home and how much energy and love we poured into designing it. This was supposed to be a happy and positive experience. Instead, we were blindsided by the room separation, and it felt like we walked into a tense standoff between us and the buyers. Post-closing, I immediately emailed Kelly to ask why we were separated from the buyers at closing and why this wasn't disclosed to us. Kelly began talking in circles again, ultimately, contradicting her own written statements and insisting this was at the request of the buyer's agent. So, I reached out to the buyer's agent with an apology. We found out that this was, in fact, initiated by Kelly Brown, and they too, were disappointed at how things transpired. Kelly not only continued to further lie and mislead, she also threw her assistant Katie under the bus by indicating that it was her assistants responsibility to communicate with us on closing day; to let us know about the room separation, not Kelly, as Kelly was out of town, out of WI-FI, and not reachable by phone. This was not true since multiple emails and calls were exchanged between us and Kelly on the morning of the closing. After three attempts to gain the clarification on the room separation, it was clear that Kelly had no intention of providing that. The situation was escalated to Kelly's broker and Kelly was ultimately removed from the remainder of our sale transaction and subsequent purchase of our next home. I am not one to write negative reviews but this experience with has lowered the bar and forever fractured our trust in realtors.
