It's basically an ordinary farm, but the public are allowed to go round and see all the animals - for a fee of course! It's council run, so the fee isn't too bad, actually. As you enter there is a little shop where you pay your entrance fee and can buy little souvenirs, and also some little bags of food for the goats. The first bit you come to after the shop is a pond and a load of ducks and geese. Beware, if you start to feed this lot they won't ever let you leave in fact they will follow you in quite a menacing way! It's a bit scary, especially if you've ever seen any Alfred Hitchcock films you know what I mean! The farm also has pigs, sheep, horses, donkeys, cows, etc. Depending on the time of year you might be lucky enough to see tiny little lambs, which are really cute. Then go back a few months later and find them actually quite scary and intimidating things with gigantic horns and an evil glint in the eye! There are also, of course, the goats. They are so cute, and will eat everything. They loved the little bags of food we'd bought so much that they not only ate the food, they ate the paper bag, too. There was nothing we could do to stop them! There is also a little play area for the children, with swings and a few other things. You can happily while away a few hours here, especially if the weather is nice. Often they have special events on, like once we went and they would actually let you have a go at milking a cow. Other events have been children's things like making Halloween masks, or making bat boxes. You usually have to book in advance for these events. All in all, it's a nice place and the children really seem to enjoy it - but I do feel it's under-used, and the council could make it so much more if they actually tried.

There is an excellent indoor play area, some outdoor play areas with go karts and ride on trikes..., and of course a huge selection of farm animals for your little ones to learn about. There is a cafe serving lunches and refreshments, and a party area upstairs. It cost us £24 for two adults and my three year old to access the playbarn and go on the farm tour, and my one year old went free. You can pay less just to access the playbarn, without going on the farm tour. This seems to be a great spot for parent and toddler meet ups. The farm tour was really excellent - lasting around an hour, with the opportunity to hold/pet mice, rats, Guinea pigs, and hedgehogs in the indoor small animal section. We then moved outside and saw goats, llama, pigs, donkeys, Shetland Ponies, sheep, chickens and ducks. There was lots of opportunities for the little ones to interact with the animals such as brushing the pig, sitting on the Shetland pony and feeding the hungry lambs. We all had a great day out at Big Sheep Little Cow and my three year old in particular got to try out new things through interacting with the farm animals. Special mention to all the lovely staff we came across - everyone was so friendly, and we all left smiling!

You can buy bags of feed at reception and spend hours feeding the adorable animals. The hay barn and indoor play areas are great, and there are lots of places to play outside too, weather permitting! The food at the cafe is resonably priced and of a decent quality, and the gift shop is stocked with beautiful souveniers, including a range of their own stuff featuring some of the animals living there. Overall, I love this place. Whatever your age, it makes a great day out.

The indoor play area is excellent, although can get over run with kids, the digger machines are brilliant and picnic eating facilities are excellent. The farm itself looks very much like a farm, usually these farms have graphics around but this looks like a working farm. The animals are probably the least appealing thing and the cafe needs a better menu but a good day out for kids.

There's an enticing restaurant and cafe onsite but we just got some fresh trout to go which was amazing - so tasty and definitely worth picking up!

We went for a mid-week lunch and settled for a very nice collar of pork, settled on a mound of black pudding mashed potatoes, pork medallions and the Thurs special of Beef Olives. All were served with a large family style platter of fresh veggies which were perfectly cooked. We were all very happy with our meals. They are child friendly and have high chairs ... and the service was excellent especially from the lady from the kitchen who came up to check that we were ok a number of times and also catered to getting some bread up as our baby, was getting antsy. There is an outdoor area and a kids play area so parents can sample a pint while the kids play. My only criticism is that their bottled beer is sold at the same price as I can get in other places, I would have thought it could be 15-20% cheaper (or sold as a pack of 12+ for a bigger discount) as I would have thought bulk sales would have benefitted all. The meat is hung for 3 weeks and instead of being sold fresh, it is all frozen instead of many other farms who sell fresh and what does not sell then is frozen. You can buy here with total piece of mind knowing that you have full traceability on the products. They also sell their own potatoes what we buy per sack. They have won a number of food awards, prices are quite reasonable and staff are efficient and friendly. The farm itself is medieval and time team from TV have completed a programme what is due to be on TV Jan 2009. This is a fantastic place to shop so please go and try it. I have no problem recommended this to anyone. This place is really the bees knees as far as quality of food goes

The shop is very well-stocked with all the sorts of things you'd expect; speaking from experience, the quality of their produce is very good although the prices are a shade on the high side. The pick-your-own area is well laid out and again, the quality is certainly there -- we picked stacks of raspberries and enjoyed them very much. There's plenty of parking, the staff are friendly and welcoming -- all in all, we couldn't recommend this place highly enough.

If you sit in and eat then the food is amazing and you can't help but want to go back. Half way between thornton dale and pickering, cedar barn is in a beautiful setting and there's nothing to distract you from the gorgeous fields that surround it. I don't know if they still do this but they used to grow strawberries and other fruits that you can go and pick and these were grown to perfection and if they still do this then I definitely recommend it.
