The key difference with Congregationalism is that there is no governing hierarchy. Each church governs itself. Congregationalism values each persons individuality on their faith journey, and ability to think for themselves. My husband and I come from different religious backgrounds and this church really met both of our spiritual needs. Another thing I love about this church is it's Community Through Understanding Program, dedicated to bridging the gaps in understanding and developing relationships with our diverse faith community. The congregation governs the church so it's a very democratic place to worship. It's family friendly, supportive of helping others in need through mission work and in 2018 started a program, "Community Through Understanding," which promotes developing relationships with those of different beliefs. We have found First Church helps us broaden and enrich our spiritual lives. We are better people because of our experience there.

I was bored out of my mind thru many sermons, and always participated in the Xmas eve programs with the rest of the kids. I left it all behind to be the Agnostic I am now, but there are still some pretty happy memories from my Formative Years that happened here. My mom teaches ESL classes here for the now mostly Hispanic congregation. And she's still a member. My dad and I don't get it, but whatever, it makes her happy. Oh, and she's learning Spanish from her students - have I mentioned she's gonna be 80? And is still hot. A really good experience I had here, was my confirmation classes. The pastor at the time was this no-nonsense, straight talk guy. He used to be not only a marine, but a policeman. He had a very realistic way of looking at the world, and related that to the religious stuff we were learning in 8th grade when we Lutherans were "confirmed". I can still parrot some of the stuff I memorized from Luther's Small Catechism - and if that doesn't amuse and horrify my friends, my friend, then nothing will.

If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, look no further! All you need is a decent grasp of conversational English and you can make a difference and make some friends while doing this. As other reviewers have stated, this church offers English classes for (Spanish speaking) immigrants 3x/week, 2 hours each. It is highly flexible, accepting volunteers from nearby schools, churches, and the community for whatever time commitment they can make. I initially signed up for 1 or 2 nights a week, but loved it so much that I signed up for every night I was available! I helped 2 students with English, they threw in some Spanish lessons for me, and we learned about each other's lives as we learned each other's languages. I developed a great relationship with the 2 students I worked with - so much so that I was sad when one of them was paired with someone else. We are going out for margaritas to celebrate the end of a recent session! The church is extremely generous and donates the space, electricity, and copies of the worksheets that guide our lessons. Other funding comes from other congregations, grants, and donations from students and tutors. The English lessons are headed up by Lori and Issac, two fluent English/Spanish speakers. Students and tutors alike enjoy Lori's enthusiasm and consistency. Isaac offers voluntary Spanish language Bible studies at the end of each day's lesson. Childcare is usually available for children older than 4. At the end of a lesson block student's accomplishments are recognized by having volunteers read their compositions and giving out certificates to students who have had perfect attendance or attended certain numbers of lessons (like 100). Afterwards there is a delicious potluck. It's a great celebration of the progress students make and a chance for locals to try some great Mexican food. Today was a special event at the cathedral, the annual Kirkin' o' th' Tartans, a celebration of…read moreScottish heritage and culture. The origins of the kirking are the stuff of legend, and like most legends, it is probably based in some fact but where the fact leaves off and the fantasy starts has been lost to history. First of all, what does it mean? The Scottish Gaelic word, "kirk" means church, and in this context, "kirk" means "blessing." Tartans are the traditional plaid emblems of Scottish clans, woven into (typically) wool cloth. According to legend, in the mid-18th Century, the British rulers took revenge on Scotland in retaliation for a failed attempt to regain Scottish independence. The wearing of tartans, kilts and any highlanded symbols was forbidden. Legend says Highlanders wore tartans under their garments, in defiance of the law, with their tartans blessed in church. 46 years later, the law was rescinded and the wearin' of the tartans returned. The problem is that no real history of the secret wearin' o' the tartans is known in Scotland. So this tradition may be a uniquely American tradition, going back to World War II. Either way, the Kirkin' o' th' Tartans takes place in churches all across the county on April 6 each year. Sometimes it's celebrated on Reformation Sunday the last Sunday in October, sometimes on St. Andrew's Day (St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland) on November 30, or, as in Milwaukee, on Tartan Day on April 6. At the kirking of the tartans, there is lots of bagpipe music, Scottish dancing, remembrance of those who left us in the prior year, the reading of the 23rd Psalm (with a Gaelic accent) and, of course, the blessing of the tartans. The joint bagpipe/pipe organ rendition of "Amazing Grace" could bring a tear to your eye, and it was the first time I've ever heard a pipe organ almost overpowered. Now I'm looking forward to the Highland Games, but I'm marking my calendar for April 6, 2015.
