    Pear Street Cemetery

The story of…read moreSusannah The Pear Street Cemetery is a spooky old graveyard and like most spooky old graveyards it has a spooky old story that is told about it. This particular story is about a young woman named Susannah. Susannah was a young woman that was married to a fisherman named Benjamin around the year 1785. And like all fisherman Ben had to go out into the harsh and dangerous ocean to earn a living. And like all fisherman it was never certain exactly when or even if he would return. On one particularly day the weather was especially nasty and stormy and Benjamin's boat didn't return. Susannah became frantic and went down to the water to look, wait and watch. Unfortunately night came and Ben's boat still didn't return so Susannah stayed by the water trying to catch a glimpse of the fishing vessel. The next morning Susannah's body was found floating by the shore. Apparently she was caught by a huge wave and either drowned or smushed on the rocks. Ironically Benjamin's boat did return later in the day and he was unharmed. Poor Susannah was buried in the small Pear Street Cemetery by her house and Benjamin eventually remarried. It is said that Susannah never stopped looking for her husband and over the decades and centuries a strange mist has been seen around Susannah's grave. Since ghosts don't seem to like me I didn't see anything strange around Susannah's grave but I did see a very cool, ancient and very historic old graveyard. Lots of strange, simple but unique memorials, many with the anchor that indicates the person was lost at sea. I didn't get to see the apparition of Susannah of any other ghost but it was a fascinating cemetery to visit. If you ever go here and actually see poor Susannah make sure you say hello to her for me.
