I would like to present only facts related to this business. The person who runs SJ repair and…read moreremodel is "Jim" Steinke or James P. Steinke. This is not a registered business as required with Michigan's LARA. He claims to be a general contractor but this simply is not true. He presented himself as such with very large promises to do a home renovation for us. After several initial meetings, we were presented with a contract and decided to move forward. Error on our end was not checking his business credentials or license. He became very distant with only very minor check ins for about 2 months. He made promises of architects and designers. Again, not the and never happened. Most of what he promises is wildly over inflated. He does demolition well. I cannot speak for much of his work because he only laid half a bathroom worth of tile. Never got any additional tile to complete it (we purchased the rest on our own). We also had to go with another contractor to complete that bathroom before our daughter was born. This was after literally begging to have it complete by Mr. Steinke. His trim work is sub par AT BEST. We have another company coming to fix imperfections he made. He, on several occasions, did not pay his sun contractors. ALL came to my wife and I for payment. And all were paid with bad checks at times. All walked off the job. As a result of us trying to not live in a construction zone with a toddler and new baby, we paid for a flooring to get laid as we loved the sub contractors. They were all honest and hard working. After requesting reimbursement from Mr. Steinke, he wrote we 3 bad checks. Most of our request to bring materials resulted in excuses as to why he couldn't bring them. Or he'd bring things over little by little over months. Prior to signing the contract, he promised ALL material to be delivered before starting work. He currently owes me money for work he never even remotely started. I am also aware of several other clients that were even less fortunate than my family and have had their money taken without work or materials ever coming into fruition. I cannot warn anyone enough to avoid this gentleman. He is a handyman disguising himself as a contractor under a false business. I am working with other couples to try to warn others and hopefully put a stop to his fraudulent activities.
