I used to love it here for years, but it's gotten too popular and lost the charm it had for me. The popularity is great for the museum itself. It's experienced an undeniable glow up. People I could never get to step a toe in a museum now beg me to come with them to see some trendy exhibit they heard about. Marketing has improved immensely. They've expanded their reach beyond geeks and schoolchildren to a wide variety of people, and that's good. It keeps the museum alive. It's just no longer one of my favorite places personally. What I miss the most are the old First Saturdays that no one knew about. I'd look forward to them all month like a child looks forward to Christmas. It felt like Brooklyn's best kept secret. Now you have to preregister to get sardined. I'm not much of a noisy crowd person, so I end up leaving early the rare occasion I attempt to go. I do enjoy the salsa parties. Those are fun. Staff can be rude as all else. I've never personally had an issue, but I've seen some uncalled for behavior towards other patrons, especially if they give touristy vibes. The littlest thing can set someone off. It's completely uncalled for. read more

Three stars why ? Because they charge for the special exhibits. The Brooklyn museum offers a "pay what you wish" admission but it excludes the special exhibits. The First Saturday evening program is free but requires advance registration. I visited last week. Many sections were textile and design focused. If you're a fan of interior design, the museum has a great section with rooms recreated as they were in the past. My favorite was the art deco room. It's mysterious and unique. The dinner party by Judy Chicago is a great piece of feminist art. Seydou Keita "A tactile lens" was excellent also. I was hoping for a museum tour. They offer both free and paid tours but you need to "ask for location details at the admission desk" Good to know. The next big exhibit is by designer Iris van Herpen from May 16 - December 6, 2026. Tickets are required - 30$ adult general public price. Tickets are 21$ for students. The cost of admission places an unfair financial barrier. Exposure to art and culture can have a profound positive impact on people. Charging this much money just feels greedy. I'll say it ! They can't give broke New Yorkers one exhibit free day. We came here for their free first Saturdays! You have to rsvp online ahead of time to get tickets. I was able to get an order confirmation but no actual tickets were sent to my email. This seemed to be a common issue as the couple next to us was having the same issue. If you had the actual tickets, you could skip the lines otherwise, we had to line up to speak with someone. They were very friendly and helpful. They used our order confirmation number to print out our tickets. First Saturdays start from 5-7pm but since we arrived a couple hours early, the staff was so kind to give us some general tickets so we could roam around before first Saturdays start. They said when it starts, there's a long line outside the museum so they suggest to just stay inside before it starts. There were a few interesting exhibits but the one I was looking forward to: Monet (seemed like we just missed it which is such a shame). My favorite was the dinner party which had such an interesting concept and was presented in such a beautiful way. Waiting for elevators took a lot of time so I suggest going to the top floor and making your way downwards. Sometimes, it felt like a bit of a maze to get through the exhibitions. At 5pm, they had an hands on art activity for everyone which was first come first serve until capacity. However, they did try to limit the time people participated to 10-15 mins to accommodate more participants. It was a fun activity - using magazines and tear off technique to make a collage. But it did feel a little rushed to finish a mini project in 10-15 mins as they went around giving many time reminders and encouraging people to wrap up their projects in 10-15 minutes. When first Saturday starts, there's lots of music. There's live music on the 1st and 3rd floor as well as various speakers. On the 3rd floor, they also had an open market with lots of vendors. Overall: it was quite an interesting experience but I can't say I really enjoyed this museum. I definitely have other museums in New York that I prefer more but it's still nice to visit once. read more

Visited the Brooklyn Museum recently and had a really nice time. The space is super unique and offers a variety of different art -- from time period to medium, there was a lot to see. Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area and looking for something indoors to do! read more

I loved this museum! I didn't realize it would be so much art because the name doesn't indicate that, I thought it would be a museum about Brooklyn for some reason LOL. There are 5 floors and so much to see & I loved that the exhibits were really well curated. We went during the Iris Van Herpen exhibition and this is my only issue, and not just an issue here. The exhibition costs extra money and if you have a museums for all (free) entry, it does not include that. Many museums follow this practice and I think it's worth reconsidering. Nobody should have to miss out on exhibits because they can't afford it. Other than that, this is a lovely museum that you can spend hours walking around and taking everything in and I highly recommend making a stop if you're visiting the area. read more

I continue to visit and appreciate everything Brooklyn Museum has to offer. It's one of my favorite museums! I was the lucky recipient recently to be invited to the new Monet + Venice exhibit. A private event with delicious Venice inspired appetizers and wine along with a private viewing of the exhibit (running until February 2026). The museum seems to have undergone renovations from since my last visit and every time I go, their exhibits take my breath away. The current Monet exhibit is no exception. I love the work of Monet and this dreamy collection of Venice, water lillies and more is a must see. Brooklyn Museum stands proud on Eastern Parkway adjacent to another favorite of mine--Brooklyn Botwnic Garden. Two amazing institutions. Catch this exhibit and enjoy all Brooklyn Museum has to offer. read more

Saturday October 5 When we went to the nearby Brooklyn botanic garden we took a Subway from 57 and 7th station on the b or q line getting off at prospect Park right next to the botanic garden 275 without transferring what a bargain . Could not do this on a weekend as the b or q line did not go out of Manhattan on weekends so had to transfer to another line to get to the Brooklyn museum. Georgia O'Keefe exhibit here. Do not have to go to Santa Fe North Albuquerque to see her paintings. Extensive collection of art paintings mainly older not modern. Very large collection of Assyrian and Egyptian mummies and caskets for those interested in such things. Enough to rival the metropolitan museum in Manhattan nearby. Next time I will come on a Tuesday through Friday and visit both the Brooklyn museum and next door Brooklyn botanic gardens preferably in May when flowers blooming. read more

Have always been a fan of Monet's artwork and noticed the Brooklyn museum had an exhibition of his Venice pieces. First time going to this museum and thought it was free entrance but it's around $30 to see the exhibit. Overall it was pretty nice and straight forward. Monet's artwork is much nicer to see in person, definitely worth swinging by and checking it out while it's available. read more

My wife and I are ticket holders year in. . this place other than the metropolitan museum of arts in Manhattan is special .the exhibits are really good and like the mma there is a old house to explore inside. There is a cafe on the first floor that serves wine and cheese plates and a bar . Outside of the Cafe near the elevator there is also a snack area and coffee,tea. During first Saturday which is seasonal it's best to use the stairs because it's slow do to the volume of people. First Saturday is on the first Saturday of each month's that highlights different events and cultures it's usually party time. read more

I had no idea how large this museum is... we have never been before. So yesterday, we decided to go see it... thinking we would walk around for 2 hours and then go get lunch. Well, we spent 2 hours on floor 5 alone. Stopped for a coffee and snack... light lunch. It was ok for food. Then proceeded to go through floor by floor until we finished... 7 hours total. Beautiful art, awful curation. The lighting and exhibit design is HORRIBLE. I was with a group of artists in our 20's and all of us could barely see - glares on every painting and dark lighting on multicolored walls. Very try-hard curation that ruined the art. There is no artist info next to most of the art, erasing the artists for the sake of "modernity" (you can only find the artist on an iPad). The museum must redesign the galleries so the art can be appreciated. This was honestly pathetic and disrespectful to these incredible artists. read more

On a scorching hot day in NYC this was a fabulous way to escape the heat. Each floor was dedicated to specific subjects and time periods. Sculptures, oil paintings, time period rooms to full on projector piece playing (doors). There is something for everyone and if not there's always a coffee shop bakery to hang out in a great atrium room. *Food trucks conveniently outside as well. Entrance fee is recommended $20/person if you go to a counter person. Otherwise it's just standard $20 if you purchase ticket on a machine. There was plenty of parking in rear and on street! read more

Always an amazing experience. Especially, weekends with so many different events and art exhibitions taking place. Weekends can be very crowded. The wait time on the line can exceed over 20 minutes. As a born and raised New Yorker this is one of my second favorite museums to visit. The last time I visited was for a Frida Khalo exhibition. I highly encourage to purchase your tickets online to avoid the crowds and the lines in person. There is a separate line for those online tickets. read more

I cannot get enough of the Brooklyn Museum! The newest exhibit "Solid Gold " on the 5th floor is amazing ! I am impressed by the art. Each piece has a display explaining the meaning and the concept. The Kaws Twin statues are the welcoming staple. The pop-shops that are outside has vendors selling jewelry, glasses and ethic cloths all handmade. The Museum is walking distance from the Brooklyn Library and the Botanical Garden. The pics are from my various visits. I stay most of my day there going from floor to floor. read more

Again, Brooklyn Museum is not as big as the MET, not quite . . . but it's way edgier, way cooler. In addition to all the exhibits I've raved about before, Brooklyn brings the Black and the brown and the culture again and again . . . no Greek statues here. This time around they gave us "Toward Joy: New Frameworks for American Art," focusing on Black, feminist, and indigenous perspectives. Elizabeth Catlett: A Black Revolutionary Artist and All That It Implies. Self explanatory. The also have a large special exhibition, "Solid Gold," which explores gold through the ages . . . gold in fashion, politics, film, culture, fashion. And then the Brooklyn Artists Exhibition, which features less-known, local artists. So you get a fresh perspective. They did change their formal restaurant down the hall to a basic cafe in the front, so not a fan of that . . . but that's minor. Plenty of great restaurants nearby. I'm a member. A single membership for a year, without discount, costs 75 dollars and includes two one time use parking passes. So if you go a couple or three times a year, totally worth it. read more

I really enjoyed the Brooklyn museum especially the 5th floor with the modern arts! The museum is surprisingly a bit smaller than what I had anticipated, so I was able to go through the museum in less than 2 hours. I'd recommend checking it out! The Brooklyn Museum is a real gem that is probably missed by so many people! We have made it a couple times, most recently to catch the Oliver Jeffers exhibit. The rest of the museum has interesting special pieces, but even the main collection is creatively displayed and a wonderful learning experience. Be sure to make the trip! read more

They had a hard time processing two tickets for us online. We didn't know how to make plans the next day. Did we have tickets or not? They took our money.....no tickets. They had a hard time responding to emails and calls either, no one to contact. The Monet in Venice exhibit was exhaustive and brilliant, but it also was half...not Monet. And half....not in Venice, either. Maybe it just sounded like a good title? Such a great building, with....so little to see there. Could be better curated, managed, maybe they need bigger donors? Who knows. It remains, unfortunately, a 3rd tier musuem option that is strangely hard to get to. They are friendlier than the staff at most other museums in NYC, and staff at MoMA and the Frick, among others, could learn a thing or two from a visit. Their lobby cafe, the only place to eat there, had overpriced terrible airport-sandwiches, unfortunately. read more

Lots of history/culture to be seen here. Great for the kids over 10 that understand what they are looking at. Also attended a few event here that were even better. The cafe is great as well. Even if you don't go inside you can sit outside on the steps and people watch more take in the neighborhood sights and vendors. If that's not enough you can go to the Botanical Gardens, the library or simply walk up the street to Prospect Park. Great spot to just be out and about at. read more

Brooklyn Museum is such a feel good, enriching, explorative environment. I love that it has something for just about anyone and the exhibits are constantly revolving. It makes for a great location to revisit anytime you are in the area. On this day I was there for the Spike Lee, Brooklyn's own, exhibit that included a large installation of his personal collections. It was a great look into what has inspired him throughout his lifetime. There is always something new worth checking out at this museum. I would recommend check out their art and events calendar when planning your visit. Highly recommend. read more

This place is poorly run, and they're not transparent about their pricing. I went on First Saturday where there's free general admission with some strings attached. Here's what wrong with the museum in general: -The museum is "pay what you want", but their website tries to hide the fact that you can do this. -Additionally, "pay what you want" is not available with online tickets. You have to wait in line for their Admissions Desk for it. They should make it like the American Museum of Natural History where "pay what you want" is available with online tickets. -Even if you do get "pay what you want", that only gets you general admission. If they have any special exhibitions, you're forced to pay full price. They should make it like The Metropolitan Museum of Art where your "pay what you want" ticket gets you into everything. Here's what was wrong with First Saturday: -They don't do timed entry, and they only let a certain number of people into the building at a time. So even if you have a First Saturday ticket, you're forced to wait outside in the cold in a line that wraps around the building. -It's not clear on the website that special exhibitions are not included with the First Saturday ticket. -When I got to the Solid Gold exhibition they told me that even though I had a free general admission ticket, I would have to pay full price for a general admission ticket that included access to Solid Gold. So basically free admission to 90% of the museum, and they expected me to pay $25 to go into one room. They should offer reduced pricing for the exhibitions. -To make matters worse, there wasn't even a way to pay upstairs, so they wanted me to go from the 5th floor all the way to the crowded 1st floor to pay for an upgraded ticket. read more

I came to see the Zine exhibit, Alicia Keys show, as well as the women's exhibition... ...because it's women's month and I saw some magazine that it's where I need to be today! Alicia Keys exhibit... ahhh, a warm feeling! First of all to walk in and see the bicycle ... it just made you nostalgic for your childhood and listening to the oldies music all along! It was wonderful to see their collection of art! The Zine show was pretty charming. Made you think of how clever kids were in high school ~1 million years ago & using a xerox copier and clipping images /pop culture images from magazines, + just being witty and young ! The Womens exhibit was so interesting. Ladies express themselves. there's a struggle it's good to document the times . What beauty standards are and achieving your dreams . Egyptian area, Buddhism area, Asian art too!! There is a lot to see! Enjoy it! Also enjoy the cafe. They had special JUDY CHICAGO COOKIES. read more

I love BK Museum, especially during events like Black History Month and Juneteenth. The staff is generally friendly and well intended there, which is why I'm not going to mention the ONE person who was giving people a hard time at First Saturdays. I give a big shout out to the museums curators for honoring Brooklyn and Brooklyn artists and the history of the borough and its residents - even prior to gentrification in areas like Bed-Stuy and Bushwick. The artwork is obviously extensive as well. Much to be enjoyed. I'll go back over and over again. read more

I guess I love art. ;D Brooklyn Museum (est 1823) is an art museum in Prospect heights, Brooklyn. It has the most comprehensive and wide-ranging collections of arts and historical artifacts from around the world. This museum is often overlooked and less popular among museums in NYC. Its massive five floor galleries and exhibits are filled with interesting collections. We came on a weekend and it was not crowded. Admission ticket price is based on any monetary donation visitors can afford. Therefore, we pledged ten bucks and it's worth it! :D Plenty of parking space in the parking lot. Free Wifi. Staff were professional. Overall, I enjoyed my time exploring this museum. I highly recommend you visit. read more

Great exhibition! The staff from upon entering at security are courteous, professional and welcoming! The Spike Lee exhibit ends on Superbowl weekend! The staff told ne that they're anticipating huge crowds and believed this was the perfect day to visit. Spike Lee's work is displayed in brightly colored rooms with plenty of His life's work and includes items from his childhood up to the present where he is one of the NY Knicks biggest fan! The museum does have paid parking and is also close to buses and subways. Since my last time visiting, the museum has added a restaurant, in addition to the cafe that's been here for years. read more

I've visited the Brooklyn Museum a few times, and each and every time it's been to see really amazing exhibits. From the Virgil Abloh: 'Figures of Speech', Andy Warhol: 'Revelation' and most recently - Spike Lee: 'Creative Sources'... It's always a visual immersion and great learning experience. After going to see the Spike Lee exhibition, I've got a list of must see movies like 'Carmen Jones', 'Do The Right Thing' & 'She's Got To Have It' and rediscovered a lot of civil rights activists and significant black cultural figures like Lena Horne, Toni Morrison and Shirley Chisholm. Is this a great museum? Absolutely. Is it worth a visit? Absolutely. Will I be back? Most definitely! read more

Do the right thing and check out the Spike Lee Creative Sources exhibit on the fifth floor. It's was one of the coolest exhibits I've ever seen. I enjoyed learning about his village and favorite things, including his love for jazz music. It also reminded me of films that I had forgotten were his. read more
