After five years, fibroids regrew--which is not uncommon. I went in for imaging every 10 months or so to keep track of fibroid growth and I'm glad I did. Around the five year mark, they found adenomyosis, which is a common side effect of any gynecological surgery. It appeared on my surgical sites. This isn't the doctor's fault, but it's useful to know and to get imaging for it in the years after surgery. Problem is, when I went back to Dr Winner about a 2nd myomectomy, she encouraged me to do the myomectomy--which could have further increased my Adenomyosis issue. Mine was caused by surgery. The risk of more Adenomyosis was high with another myomectomy. Also, the iron testing she does before surgery is very general--I was anemic (at 24) when her test said my iron was fine. The Adenomyosis was making me anemic (it bizarrely hoards iron in the uterus). At no point did doctor winner advise me that there were other options for treating the Adenomyosis, like HIFU and UAE--both don't require traditional surgery and have great results for fibroids and Adenomyosis while preserving the uterus and eliminating the other health issues from Adenomyosis. This isn't fair to patients. I don't regret my 2020 surgery with Dr. Winner at all, myomectomy was my only choice with a massive fibroid and Winner was 100% the right choice. But when I complained of surgical site pain at my belly button, she didn't inform me that this could be a common side effect of the surgery where bits of endometrial lining could be accidentally left there--causing, essentially, endometriosis. There are interventional radiology treatments that are outpatient for this common side effect. Finding out that crucial context on my conditions had been left out by Dr. Winner in consultations was... not trust building. Dr. Winner should give patients more well rounded advice even if it means they don't choose surgery with her. She's amazing at getting big fibroids out with virtually no scars, doing endo excision, etc., but if you have post surgical issues or adenomyosis or fibroids that are 5-7cm and under, you may want to seek other consultations with interventional radiologists. Ultimately, I traveled to another state to get uterine artery embolization to kill off the fibroids and adenomyosis, which is performed through a single vein. No scars, no need for healing up my abdominal wall, and very little risk of causing more adenomyosis. 1.5 months out, my stomach has shrunk, my inflammation is down, my cycles are cycling and I feel great. I'll go in for cryo treatment of the belly button endo soon. --But I had to do extensive research and find other options all on my own. It would've been the kind thing to do to refer me to other practitioners so I could get the results I needed--elimination of adenomyosis and reducing risk of more adenomyosis sites. read more

I'm so thankful I was referred to Dr. Winner. After years of seeking answers and facing obstacles, it was such a relief to connect with her office and get a treatment plan in place. Her reputation precedes her, so her schedule was pretty full, and my operation was booked several months out. Still, due to my circumstances, they recommended a follow-up MRI to reassess and explore moving the date sooner, if possible. Don't trust her with your body, she ruined my entire life. Living with pain after I had a hysterectomy with her. Lot of false claims. Even did a prolapse surgery which gives me terrible pain. She got my consent when I was about to be sedated. Winner, If you're reading this, please don't do this young women. Encourage them to change their lifestyle and diet. I really react to red meat and diary and thus I know you you didn't really excise my endo instead you took my uterus and ovaries and cervix so I won't react to it. Dr Winner is an angel!! And I do mean that quite literally. My 23 year old daughter was referred to her for life altering endometriosis. She lives in Montana and we did several virtual visits prior to her coming to Seattle for extensive testing, coordination with a colo-rectal surgeon and major surgery. Turns out she has Stage 4 endometrosis that had breeched her colon. She had to have 8 inches of her colon removed, 3 large cysts (one in the ovary - which Dr Winner was able to save) and much to our relief, my daughter was pain free after several years of agony. Dr. Winner is amazing!! I had surgery with her in July 2020 and my recovery has been so easy I can hardly believe it. She performed removal of 2 ovarian cysts (Endometriomas specifically) and excision of stage IV endometriosis, laparoscopically. I had my surgery on a Thursday afternoon--was in and out of bed myself Friday night, no longer taking narcotics Saturday, and was off Ibuprofen & Tylenol by the following Tuesday. Considering I've had a similar surgery and could not get out of bed myself for at least a week solid, this new timeline was insane for me. To those who are familiar with Nancy's Nook or EndoMetropolis, I'll admit I was hesitant to see Dr. Winner at first because she wasn't on either of their lists, but they are missing out! I can't recommend Dr. Winner highly enough! She is kind and caring, intelligent and logical, and a very skilled surgeon. For years, my concerns about abdominal pain and missed periods were dismissed by other doctors and ob-gyns, even IVF doctors and endometriosis surgeons. I literally spent years going to doctors insisting I had Asherman's Syndrome and no one believed me except Dr. Winner. Dr. Winner coordinated with Dr. Broughton at Pacific Northwest Fertility (who is also absolutely fantastic) who was able to conduct a Hysterosalpingography (HSG) within 24 hours to confirm my uterine scar tissue and then completed a successful hysteroscopy to remove all my scar tissue within a month. I was referred to Dr. Winner from my fertility specialist. My specialist wanted Dr. Winner's opinion on whether I should have surgery (for endometriosis) before moving forward with IVF. This is such a tough decision and I am so glad to have had consulted with Dr. Winner. I ultimately did NOT have surgery but I can tell you that her attitude, knowledge and honestly were sooo appreciated. The procedures she ended up performing All laparoscopically were: -Ovarian cystectomy (Dermoid) - Myomectomy (Uterine Fibroid) -Excision of endometriosis -Hysteroscopic removal of IUD In the past I've also had a laparotomy to remove my right ovary with another surgeon and my recovery this time around was so much quicker. 1 night in the hospital and back to work within a couple days vs 4 nights and a month recovery. Just when I thought I had lost all hope that I would have to go through with an unwanted Hysterectomy I discovered Dr. Brooke Winner. In 2021 I was diagnosed with a large 10cm fibroid that was in the back wall of my uterus. I had extremely heavy periods changing an Ultra Tampon and Pad every hour. I also felt very uncomfortable when my bladder or bowels were full and went to the bathroom frequently. My uterus was the size of an 18 week pregnancy making me often appear very bloated and pregnant looking. No doctor wanted to listen to me. They all said it might be CANCER because I only had one and it grew super fast. They also said a myomectomy was too risky for bleeding out because it was so large. They told me I had no choice but to get a hysterectomy especially since I was done having kids (I am 37 with 3 kids). This was devastating to me. And even though I am certain I am done having children the finality of a hysterectomy and the possible complications really freaked me out. I started to seek more opinions. Doctor after doctor told me my only option was a hysterectomy. I even consulted a radiologist to do Uterine Artery Embolization and was told no due to the risk of Cancer. But as soon as I contacted the office the ball started rolling. I sent over all of my labs, ultrasound, MRI etc. The office staff was very helpful. They told me that everything would be done within the week of my surgery to help with the ease of travel. So my Pre-Op was just a few days before my surgery. I had already read tons of reviews about how awesome Dr. Winner was so I wasn't so nervous to not meet her in person until the Pre-Op. Oh my goodness did she exceed my expectations. I had a list of 14 questions! Yes 14! By the end of the visit she asked me if I had any questions. Well she answered all of them! Today I am 3.5 weeks PO and I feel great. I honestly can't believe how minimal the pain was. I was up and walking the neighborhood day 3 and was on a train for 6 hours day 4. I immediately noticed a difference in how frequently I needed to use the bathroom. I also see a significant different in the size of my tummy. I feel like I can breathe again! I feel like I got my life back. I am so thankful that she chose to take the extended surgical training so she can help people like me! I am thankful that she is an advocate for women! We need to change how the surgical program for OBs works. We need more doctors like her! We need OBs who are not trained in these areas to refer to specialist doctors like her instead of just opting for a hysterectomy. Being only 34 at the time, and having done a fair amount of research previously, that didn't feel right to me. I'm so glad that I was able to find Dr Winner and seek her opinion. It's been two weeks since my total laparoscopic hysterectomy. I had about 7 years of issues with my periods. My gyno and I had tried many options to try and regulate my periods. We exhausted just about every plan of action until I heard the magic words of "oh, let's just take it out!" I have to say that I practically jumped up and down with joy. Then reality sat in of what was about to happen. I was referred to Dr Brooke Winner and knew the moment she walked in the exam room that this was going to be great. I was so impressed with her confidence in her extensive training and experience was evident. When you are going under the knife, that is exactly what you want. She explained exactly what I was to expect - before, during and after. All nerves completely vanished. The day of the procedure I was more concerned about the nurses at the hospital struggling to get my IV started than I was for the actual procedure. I was in and out in what seemed like minutes....thank you to the great meds!! I stayed at the hospital for about 4 hrs after surgery to make sure I could urinate and handle some food. Thanks to the catheter, it was a little painful but there was no discharge. Nothing at all - almost as if nothing happened. I was able to get home and get comfy. Walking around wasn't that painful either. I was really amazed at how great I felt. I took the pain pills for maybe 3 days, switched to Advil/Tylenol and then nothing. Like I said, it's been two weeks and I feel like I never had anything done. Ok, maybe a little when I laugh. I'm still taking it easy and won't be pushing it just like the Dr ordered. She even called to check on me the next day. I'm telling you - well cared for is exactly how I felt. This review has been a long time coming. Like one other reviewer, I have also had very intimidating and invasive procedures in the past (doctors were dismissive, after care was way below satisfactory, IV's continuously were put in wrong, my concerns were slighted, I was told it's just me, etc,). That past experience left me with a huge emotional scar and so much skepticism that I was debating staying away from hospitals for as long as I could stand it. Since Dr. Winner does surgeries out of one of the hospitals that fits within the description above, I was beyond nervous about the procedure she suggested. I seriously had to weigh the pros/cons more than usual before going back to that hospital and only decided to move forward after our lengthy conversations and reading her reviews (at the time, she and I did not have a long rapport, as she recently took over my regular Gyno's patient's). Dr. Winner listened, asked questions, and attempted to reassure me, but I was still nervous....until I checked into the hospital. The experience was like night & day compared to my last: The nurses were attentive and seemed to have read the notes from Winner about my tricky veins. Dr. Winner came up with a solution that made the IV poke short and painless. Brilliant! I've never smiled with relief before a surgery. Pre-op: she checked in with me while I was still lucid and came across as comfortable, confident and very reassuring. Recovery seemed to go as planned; she was on time and there were no complications. Post surgery was just as smooth; there was individualized follow up AND pain management was taken care of. I was referred to Dr Winner by my obgyn after painfully discovering I had a large twisted fibroid. At 71 fibroids have usually shrunk with the advent of menopause. Lucky me I fall into the exception category. Mine had grown to three times what should have been normal size. Dr. Winner saw me for an emergency consult and scheduled laparoscopic surgery as soon as I could get on her schedule. Then Covid hit. So the procedure needed to be rescheduled. Two additional months later it was done. During that whole time, Dr. Winner and her staff stayed in touch with me, effectively "holding" my hand until surgery could proceed. Everyone from scheduling...and in a pandemic when you don't know from day to day 'when' something can proceed, that is a very difficult job; to nursing staff and Dr. Winner, they all checked in with me, keeping me up to date on any changes, and making sure I was ok. The procedure was a total success, and I feel better than I have in a long time. Guess I didn't realize just how sick I'd become in the last year as the tumor grew. Although I'm retired now, I have spent most of my career working in hospital and clinical situations. Because of that I can pretty much walk into a physicians office and tell by the energy and respect that is given to the doctor, how cohesive the team is. It's this energy that makes the difference between an ok practice....and an excellent one. Dr. Winner and her staff have built an excellent one. I will continue to be grateful that Dr. Winner has developed a much needed specialty and that because of that, at 71 I'm now feeling more like 50 again...ok maybe 60. Excellent Surgeon, I met with a few surgeons to talk about having a laparoscopic hysterectomy, when I met with doctor Winner I knew I had found the right one . I had problems with large fibroids for years And had to take care of it. She is to the point, tells you exactly what is going to happen step by step. I'm not being hyperbolic, I truly believe Dr. Winner saved my life if not my sanity. I had suffered years of intractable migraine plus heavy bleeding that was not being controlled by an IUD or birth control pills. It was bad enough for at least one terrifying ER visit. I met with Dr. Winner, whom I had been referred to by my exceptional PCP Dr. Jessica Rongstitch. She made me immediately comfortable and reassured me that the next step, a hysterectomy, could be done with minimal opening of the abdomen and the recovery would be minimal. I have a history of fibroids causing abnormal vaginal bleeding. I had endometrial ablation which helped somewhat but unfortunately, the bleeding continued. OBGYN suggested a hysterectomy as the last resort. I was not ready for a major surgery and started to look for a second opinion. I found Dr. Winner. She suggested a hysteroscopy with myosure. During the procedure she was able to remove two fibroids. The procedure went very smoothly and I felt fine the next day (no pain/minimal discharge). I had a severe case of endometriosis, fibroids, extremely painful cycles and more which were severely affecting my quality of life. I didn't know the full extent of my issues until after surgery.... I was referred to Dr. Winner through my naturopath who was concerned about my continued symptoms after my first surgery with ablation of endometriosis and endometrioma removal in August 2017. I had a different surgeon at the time and wasn't ready for a hysterectomy. Unfortunately, there is always a risk that the symptoms and endometriosis would return and chose (then) to keep my uterus and ovaries- hoping "cleaning the junk out" would do the trick. My doctor referred me to Dr. Winner's practice due to the nature of my previous health history and complex issues. A general OBGYN would not have had the expertise that Dr. Winner has with complicated female issues and surgical expertise. Her specialty focusing in high risk patients with complicated health histories was exactly what I needed to walk me through the steps of discovering exactly what was going on after my 2017 surgery with some testing and where my body stood in 2019. After the tests were performed, I was walked step by step verbally and visually (drawn diagrams) what was happening inside my body and what options I had to handle my health. Dr. Winner provided me with options and gave me the risks and rewards of all the options. I had my health plan set before my December 2019 surgery, and knew if the endometriosis had destroyed too much that a full removal was MY best option for recovery and a life with less pain and higher quality of life. From the moment I woke up after surgery I noticed a difference with less pain (and it wasn't just because of narcotics!). I was walking the hospital floor a few hours after surgery in less pain than during my cycles every month. The nurses even asked how my pain was since they were amazed at my mobility. I am a pain pansy, and to my delight, only needed about 24 hours of narcotics to manage pain. I was informed prior to surgery of my hormone options and after my full hysterectomy my symptoms were handled with Rx meds once I noticed I needed some hormone adjustments since medical menopause was setting in. Dr. Winner "reused" 3 old incisions from my previous laparoscopy- as not to further scar my belly. The recent incisions have healed so nicely and quickly directly over the old ones, and never had any issues with them from the laparoscopy. I'm 8 weeks post op now and have had all my questions and needs addressed before and after surgery. I'm so happy to be relieved of such pain on a consistent basis and looking forward to focusing my energy and efforts on other aspects of my life. Thank you, Dr. Winner, for helping me to have less pain and more freedom to focus on my life and family without constant pain. I had fibroids, endometriosis on both ovaries, endometriosis around my Fallopian tube and against my rectum, endometrioma inside my right ovary, and tissue encasing my left ovary to my pelvis. We just happened to be leaving the hospital floor to go home and Dr. Winner was entering the elevator at the same time to leave the hospital. She handed over the pictures taken during the surgery and said she could take the time right then to discuss how everything went and what happened. Since I was feeling pretty good and was interested in hearing what she had to say, we agreed and were taken to a conference room to informally discuss the surgery from a few hours earlier. I knew how much pain I'd been in, but the pictures- of how badly the endometriosis and other issues were- were reassurance that I made the right choice. At 41, I wasn't interested in another decade or more of constant pain hindering my quality of life. Dr. Winner was able to use her expertise in high risk surgeries to make my tricky surgery a great success. I highly recommend Dr. Winner to anyone with difficult female issues. read more

I had fibroids and a lot of menstrual pain and problems. Dr. Winner was the first gynecologist who really listened. I decided on a full laparoscopic hysterectomy for my treatment and it was the best decision. I wish I'd done it sooner. I had no pain almost immediately after surgery and recovery has gone very well. Dr. Winner brought me back to life. I had 7 fibroids that have caused me the most pain I've been in for months and a period that last 3 months. Struggling with heavy periods, cramps, backache and feel like going to the bathroom often? That was me. (late 40's and physically fit.) I recently had a laparoscopic myomectomy with Dr. Winner. I was very nervous initially to do the surgery. I did it in hopes of having another child one day, and I had some large fibroids that complicated my last pregnancy; under the advice of my OB-GYN, they wanted me to have them removed, and assured me that Dr. Winner was the best in Seattle for the job. I had six fibroids removed, the largest being 7 cm. I was in quite a bit of pain upon waking up after surgery, and the day after. Second day post surgery I felt much better and did not need narcotics/pain meds. I took Advil from there on and was able to move around more and more each day, even taking some walks - after a week I felt pretty good! I work from home and was able to be working with ease within 5 days. I was back in the Crossfit gym 4 weeks post op (taking it easy of course!), and have three small incision scars that were made on my stomach. Dr. Winner is warm and caring - her bedside manner is wonderful and reassuring. I wavered a few times on doing this, and had questions - if it wasn't an in-person appointment, she would call me personally. She even called me the day after surgery to see how I was doing. Finding a great doctor is fairly easy if you do your research - but finding one that's mastered their craft AND exhibits warmth and caring for their patients, that's not so easy! I highly recommend seeing Dr. Winner if you're thinking about minimally invasive fibroid removal. She is direct, honest, cares for her patients and is a highly skilled surgeon. read more

Dr. Winner provided excellent care for me throughout the entire process of a complex surgery. She thoroughly explained to me what to expect beforehand, was readily available for questions throughout my recovery, and took a chance on me with a minimally invasive technique when many other surgeons would have gone with an open procedure, and my recovery time was easier because of it. I appreciate how she calls patients personally with results and to check in after surgery--that was an unexpected and lovely surprise, especially since I work in healthcare and know how busy clinics are. My quality of life has drastically improved after surgery (no more chronic pelvic pain! It's amazing!), and I am so grateful for her care.
