The Comal Inn is literally in the perfect location! It's tucked away in a historic residential neighborhood and away from the noise and commotion of Interstate 35. It is charming, quiet and it is walking distance from the river and Schlitterbahn. The owners remembered me saying it was my sons birthday trip and we woke up to a treat of birthday cookies on the patio table the next morning! We all thought that was really sweet and thoughtful! The room was clean and cozy. There was a king bed and a queen pull out for the kids. We spent most of our time outside, but the room left nothing to be desired. There was a table for two, cable television, WiFi, microwave, coffee maker, and a fridge stocked with fresh fruit, yogurt, milk, and ice. I absolutely loved the shared garden! I was able to relax on the large patio each evening, which looked into the gardens, and enjoy the beautiful and peaceful surroundings. My family and I enjoyed breakfast and dinner on the patio table a few times during our stay. It was lovely! Overall the experience was wonderful and I hope to be able to come back to visit again!

The combination of location, friendly Texas hospitality and freshly prepared food is way better than opting for a comparably priced typical hotel with typical free breakfast. I guess my wife and I prefer an authentic experience over a cookie-cutter chain hotel. And Gruene River Inn offers that experience at a reasonable price.

Right of Ranch Road 12 as the bend winds around the most scenic valley in Wimberley are two luxuriously appointed cottages at extremely reasonable prices (for Wimberley, that is!). The very large shower is zero entry for folks who may have special needs. For me it was just lovely having so much room to turn around in there! The cottages have a FULL living area, micro fridge, plates and silverware, coffee maker. Flat screen TVs in both the bedroom and living room. And did I mention a hot tub with VIEWS OF THE HILLS! All this - and PET FRIENDLY too! I can't wait to go back. It was total relaxation and rest.

I received the booking confirmation with instructions that a Saturday arrival needs to go to the courtesy desk at the local grocery store to get the key. We found the grocery store and went in. After several minutes of looking they did not find our envelope with the key or anything with our name on it. They said to just go out there and maybe someone was there. I looked through my emails and found another one that had shown up while we were driving with completely different instructions on how to get in. It said we were to go to the place and the key would be under a planter. We drove out a few miles and found it (difficult to find in the dark) and there were a whole bunch of people around a fire pit, several hammocks hanging in the trees and bicycles all over the place. We did not expect neighbors since that was not clear in the description. We found a small sign and a place to park on the side of the "cottage". We walked up and the key was in the door, not where it said it would be. We unloaded and as we were our neighbors (who were certainly having a good time) came over and said they were going to be there for a few days and join them if we wanted. It was a nice gesture, but not what we were expecting. Needless to say we did not get to use the hot tub, fire pit or enjoy the views as described as it was always too crowded. Later I found the info on the other half of our "private cottage" and says it sleeps 4. They had more than 4 people in there and we could hear them through the walls. The inside was ok. On the table were the rules. I am fine with rules but when they don't apply to the unit you are in it makes things confusing. They mentioned an upstairs (there isn't one), wash the dishes (there is no kitchen and the only sink is in the bathroom), that no firewood could be used, only the fake logs you buy at the store, but that the grill outside could use wood and be used as the fire pit. WHAT? None of this made sense. The bed was very uncomfortable and covered with some kind of plastic that was very loud each time you moved. The cable TV was basic, there was no wifi as described and the instructions on how to use the dvd player were wrong. The coffee maker was disgusting and partially broken. I had to clean it prior to using it and only used it once. We went into town for coffee after that. Kitchenette? Not even close. A microwave and a toaster do not make a kitchenette. There was dirt on the floors, cobwebs in most corners, hair in the drawers of the bathroom cabinets, etc etc. The only views we had were to the bushes, no sweeping views of the valley as described. It was just disappointing. We were told to do the dishes and clean everything before we left, well, we left it better than we found it for sure. We had to purchase paper towels and kleenex as no paper products were provided aside from the roll of toilet paper. This place has potential but really needs to be managed better and the descriptions are very misleading.

We stayed there from Thursday April 23rd - Sunday April 26th 2026. It was like living in an Italian Villa and you would be hard pressed to find a more gracious host and chef than Justin anywhere ! He's been doing this for over twenty years ! We arrived at the Lakehouse around 3:00 pm and were immediately welcomed by Justin who carried our bags to our upstairs Medici Room and gave us a tour of the house. Justin also provided us with excellent tips on things to see and do in the area, as well as suggestions for restaurants for lunches and dinners. Thursday evening, we ate dinner on the outside patio of Gennaro's Trattoria where we enjoyed their Authentic Italian Kitchen. Friday morning, we enjoyed a delicious omelet breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room overlooking Canyon Lake and great conversation with other guests. Following breakfast, we took a leisurely drive down River Road to the quaint town of Gruene (that's pronounced "Green"). There, we had lunch at the Gruene River Grill, followed by a relaxing stroll through the many antique and boutique shops in Gruene, and a visit to Gruene Hall, Texas' Oldest Dance Hall. We then returned to Canyon Lake and enjoyed some merlot wine and cheese and crackers (which we had brought with us) on the Lakehouse's covered outdoor patio overlooking Canyon Lake. We had dinner at Canyon Lake's Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Grill which offers a full menu. On Saturday morning, we enjoyed a delicious Belgian waffle breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room. Following breakfast, we drove to the town of Blanco and visited Arnosky's Flower Farm. After walking around the beautiful flower fields, we bought some beverages and snacks inside Arnosky's barn and sat in the chairs on the barn's covered back porch patio overlooking the flower fields, humming bee feeders, and bird feeders. You could sit there a long time as the scene is ever changing. From Arnosky's, we drove to Tillman's Cabin Resort in Blanco and ate lunch at the Rio Blanco Café overlooking the Blanco river. After lunch, we drove to the original 1885 Blanco Court House in downtown Blanco where we took a leisurely self-guided tour of the courthouse. We also visited Blanco's many antique and boutique shops. Saturday evening, we attended the 4 pm mass at Canyon Lake's St. Thomas The Apostle Church. At the end of mass, we witnessed one of their congregants step up to the lectern with the pastor's approval, talk about what the bible says about a wife, ask the lady in the front row next to us to step forward, and then bent down on one knee and asked her to marry him in front of the entire church congregation, and she said "YES" and they kissed. What a beautiful proposal ! Following mass, we had dinner on the outside patio of Canyon Lake's Elio's Osteria e Pizzeria. On the evening drive back to the Lakehouse, we saw lots of white tail deer in the neighborhood. On Sunday morning, we enjoyed a delicious scone and quiche breakfast in the Lakehouse breakfast room. We again enjoyed conversing with the other guests as we had every day, and then we packed and headed home. Sorry for the length of this review but my wife and I thought readers might enjoy hearing about what one can do from The Lakehouse Bed and Breakfast at Canyon Lake. The private on-property pool was the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon. I agree with all the previous visitors who raved about Justin's fantastic breakfasts! Day 1 included orange scones and a delicious zucchini fritatta and roasted potatoes - incredible. Day 2, by special request, included strawberries Romanov and eggs benedict with sausage. Thank you, Justin, for the wonderful food and conversation. We highly recommend this gem and can't wait to visit again soon!

He mentioned that he built the chapel, and it was so fun to see the pride in his eyes when he talked about each of the pieces of the chapel and how it was built. The entire grounds were incredibly gorgeous, with chickens, a duck, a cat, and little Gracie (their daschund) roaming about. I spent most of my time drinking tea on one of their screened porches, watching the animals cruise around in absolute silence (we were the only patrons on the property during our stay, score!!). Our breakfast each morning was OUT OF THIS WORLD. My second breakfast was a quiche, bacon, fruit with whipped cream, and oatmeal. I remember Belinda saying that there was a ton of food for me...all I could think was, "Challenge accepted!" Every scrap was eaten except for a small piece of bacon for Gracie. Belinda and Steve were so incredibly warm, welcoming, and personable. I really felt like I was at home with my family. I will definitely be coming back. I can tell they have tried their best to manage/clean. A/C works well, especially at night! Not much noise created. All the fire pits were upgraded and well-maintained. Some things to be careful with: 1/ Some weeds in the grass can be sticky and painful to pick off. Be careful walking in grass near the cabins (wear water shoes). 2/ Some dogs may be reactive to people/other dogs (barking). But everyone was very respectful. 3/ Didn't try the swimming pool; it looks a little muddy. 4/ Coffee station not working well. **Extremely Poor Check-In Experience and Customer Service**…read more I booked my stay at 7:37 PM and drove an hour to the property, arriving around 8:45 PM. Upon arrival, there was no clear office or designated check-in area. I asked several guests attending a loud wedding at the back of the property for assistance, but nobody could tell me where to check in. I called once and no answer. After spending approximately 15 minutes walking around the property trying to figure out how to access my booking, I called the phone number provided in the booking confirmation again atound 9:11 PM. I did not receive the check-in instructions by text until 9:29 PM--far too late, after I had already left and been forced to make other arrangements. I emailed management to explain the situation and request a refund, but their response was disappointing and unhelpful. Given the complete lack of timely communication, clear check-in instructions, and reasonable customer service, this was an incredibly frustrating experience. **If a guest drives an hour to your property, they should not have to spend their evening wandering around trying to figure out how to check in.** Basic communication and a functional check-in process are the bare minimum expected from any lodging provider. Since I was unable to access the property as needed, I will be disputing the charge with my credit card company. I would strongly recommend reconsidering this property until management makes significant improvements to its check-in process and customer service.
