Birdie is a one-year-old Beagle, Chihuahua, and Terrier mix who weighs approximately 15 pounds. We researched boarding facilities, read reviews, and selected Uptown Hounds because we expected her to receive appropriate care. When we picked Birdie up, we noticed that she was unusually subdued and was limping. We also observed that part of a middle toe on her front paw appeared to be missing. We initially did not know whether the injury involved only the toenail or more of the toe. We contacted our veterinarian and arranged for Birdie to be examined. Our veterinarian diagnosed Birdie with a partial amputation of the toe, including the loss of part of the underlying bone. This diagnosis was documented in her veterinary records. The injury was more serious than a broken or missing nail. When my husband contacted Uptown Hounds, we were told that staff did not know what had happened. We were also told that the person in charge was not present that day and would contact us. At the time of this review, we have not received an explanation of how the injury occurred or when it was first noticed. We cannot determine from the information currently available when or how Birdie sustained the injury. However, she was returned to us with a significant paw injury, and we were not informed of it before pickup. We believe a facility caring for a dog should promptly identify, document, and communicate a serious injury and provide the owner with relevant information about any veterinary care. Since returning home, Birdie has also behaved differently from usual. She has been quieter and more withdrawn than she was before boarding, and she has not shown her normal level of playfulness, confidence, or affection. We cannot say with certainty what caused these behavioral changes, but they began after her return and have been concerning to us. We understand that accidents can happen when animals are in someone else's care. Our concern is the combination of Birdie's significant injury, the lack of information provided at pickup, and the absence of an explanation so far. Birdie is a rescue dog who had become a happy, trusting, and secure member of our family. Seeing her injured and behaving differently has been heartbreaking. We trusted Uptown Hounds to provide attentive care and to communicate with us if a serious problem occurred. Instead, we brought home a dog who required veterinary treatment and whose injury had not been explained to us. We are sharing our experience so other pet owners can ask questions about injury reporting, supervision, emergency procedures, and communication before deciding whether to use this facility. We are still seeking answers about what happened to Birdie and when. As of Tuesday afternoon, the manager or anyone affiliated with this facility has not called us to give us some answers or check on our little girl.

I have had several animals vetted there prior to change in ownership and they were wonderful. Even helped me with my semi feral cat who gets bad allergy breakouts. They vetted him by picture and it worked. Otherwise, I have to trap the poor kitty with a coon trap. New vet won't prescribe the medication (saying it's illegal / a steroid) unless he is seen. Won't to do it with pictures even though we've been treating him for years this way (he's indoor for 9 years but still won't be picked up). So the cat gets to suffer OR be mentally anguished by being trapped. I guess the original vet wasn't worried about jail time. He was worried for the animal. We went and checked out the K9 Safari facility and were impressed with the spaces provided for the dogs to play both inside and outside. Despite the facility being in Richmond, Marlize makes drop off and pick up convenient for clients by offering drop offs right off I75 or at various locations in Lexington. My two Shepherds get excited when they see the doggie bus pull in and they hop right in. That tells me they are happy there and I don't feel bad having to leave them when we go on vacation. She regularly sends pics of the dogs to us via text so we can see how much fun they are having there. I often say our one Shepherd is actually sad when she has to come home because she only has one dog to play with at home vs lots and lots of different dogs there. If you're too lazy to leash your dog for 5 seconds, you're too lazy to own a dog. I also find it hard to believe they had an attitude with you over the time you would arrive to pick up your dog. I work in Georgetown and have, many times, called them to apologize and say that with traffic and the time I get off work, that I wouldn't be there until right at 6pm and they were perfectly fine with that. They are near most of the distilleries, so it's convenient to drop them off and start the Bourbon tours. The staff was so friendly and of course Shadow was his charming self until it came to the exam lol. They were gentle with him and gave him plenty of treats afterwards . His Doctor was friendly and very enthusiastic about Shadow being in such good shape . He has nice teeth , clean ears, clear lungs . Knowing all of this made me relax more. He got a clean bill of health with the exception that he's FIV positive. Shadow is the only cat in our house and he's strictly a indoor cat. Even with that he can and will live a full life . One of the ladies did agree with me that he looks like he's part Russian Blue. In terms of cost the initial exam was free because we adopted him from LHS . I did pay for some additional testing and I think it was a fair price . Shadow does have pet insurance for those just in case moments hopefully they'll be none of those. Shadow will continue to to there for check ups and future shots .
