Second trip to London we took the London underground from Heathrow to Holborn all along the Piccadilly line without transferring. 23 stops along the line but we we were seated the entire time carrying day packs and one carry-on luggage each.. The cost was the equivalent of $7 per person. If you are coming from Heathrow airport during rush hour you can take the Heathrow Express directly from the airport too Paddington station. For two people this would be about the same Fare as Uber. And you would still have to get from Paddington station to your central London hotel. In our case we could have taken the Elizabeth Express from Heathrow airport to Tottenham Court road station and walked the mile to our hotel near Holborn underground station. The fair would have been about double that of the London underground. Both of the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line are more luggage friendly. Compared to the London underground. The London underground has contactless payment. You simply scan your credit card on entry and scan the same credit card on exit. Seats seats are cloth with armrest. People with oversized luggage can put your luggage near the doors in special areas. is not advised during peak hours was standing room only. Unlike New York City most London stations have working escalators making it possible, but not easy, to carry luggage on the trains. Make sure you put your luggage on its side. One person put his luggage on his wheels in the luggage area but the luggage rolled out the entrance on its own at the next stop.

London Underground is certainly cheaper than a taxi or uber, and we had no problems finding room on the trains with our luggage (two people, each with a carry on). Announcements remind you to "mind the gap", and the stations we visited were staffed and welcoming. One even had an inspirational quote up. As expected, some stations are more modern than others since they are utilized more. I loved that I could tap my credit card to get through the gates onto the train, rather than buying a physical card or downloading an app. I wish the DC Metro used this system.

Waterloo Underground Station is the third busiest station on the London Underground network, with…read moreannual passenger numbers surpassing a whopping 80 million. It is located in Fare Zone 1, serving London Waterloo Station. It is also a short walk away from the London Eye. Obviously, due to the location, it can get very busy and it always feels like they don't have enough lifts to meet the demand! The mainline station (National Rail) which is connected, has many places to eat/drink inside the station or nearby including brands such as Starbucks and Gourmet Kitchen. There is even a McDonald's, which is located right near the Underground entrance and ticket gates. It is easier to get to the Jubilee line from the other lines, while the layout is easy to follow, I agree that it can be frustrating if you do choose to change at this station onto another line. I like the Jubilee line platforms with the safety barriers/doors, which open and close when the train arrives. Many bus services stop outside, in terms of Underground services it can be served by the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern and Waterloo & City lines. 4*

So often, I've…read morespotted you from the National Rail at Paddington, I could probably navigate the passenger flow at the top of the escalator with my eyes closed. And yet, despite that familiarity, you still screw me over every so often. Your red signals keep me sitting between stations. Your crossover with the Metropolitan at Baker Street lets me wait a while too. Your electrical flow to the trains causes the jerk starts that hurt sometimes, especially when it happens twice, no three times in a row. You're only 100 years old. Get yourself together! Your brown lines usually only take me from Paddington, through famous Baker Street and to Oxford Street, where I go on to see that lovely blue line, the Victoria. Sorry, sweetie. You're just not going where I want to go.

England has everything good, like "Top Gear", BBC 1, great pubs, great Brit music, and I love the tube. Yes! I said it... the UnderGround. I love the Underground and the entire transit system of London. It's easy and convenient. The tube takes you anywhere in London within 30 min. or less. The underground is just a well-designed train system, especially when I compare the Underground to the Los Angeles' transit system. Comparing LA's transit system to London's is like comparing Victoria Beckham's 10 thousand dollar tatas to Ricky Gervais man-breasts. The LA buses are ugly, dodgy, and you just do not want to touch them. Sorry Ricky... I loved you in "Extra." In LA, everyone knows not to ride the blue line, green line or red line after 7 PM. It's just not safe. Plus, they're slower to get around town. A car is faster, even when it's parked in gridlock on the 405 FWY. Ew! Avoid this miserable 405 folks, should you ever be visiting Los Angeles, CA.

It is not an enjoyable line to take during the morning and evening rush hours -- you cram yourself into a tiny cabin full of suits and FTs and see how you like it! I do like being the only one (usually) on the train wearing casual clothes. It makes me giggle on the inside looking at all those idiots in ill-fitting suits, uncomfortable shoes, heavy backpacks full of important documents and laptops. BWAHAHAHAHA. The other nice touch on the W&C Line ("The Drain" to those in the know) is the old-fashioned train whistle that blows whenever a train is approaching. You don't even get those on overground lines any more!

The number 11 bus route is one of the best in London for sightseeing, if you don't want to fork out…read morefor the more expensive tour buses (and endure their running commentaries), and generally operates at a much greater frequency. Running from Fulham Broadway to Liverpool Street station, the route takes in a whole load of classic sights, as well as useful transport hubs such as Victoria coach and train stations, and Sloane Square, Charing Cross, Mansion House and Bank railway/tube stations. It was even better when they used the old Routemasters, but you still get a great view from the front of the top deck. If you go straight through, the off-peak journey time is around an hour end to end, although most people are likely to travel between Victoria and St Paul's. The route starts in Fulham Broadway, and then travels the length of the King's Road in Chelsea as far as Sloane Square, when the sights begin to really start: the Chelsea Hospital, Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Parliament Square and the Houses of Parliament, Whitehall (passing Downing Street and Horseguards Parade), Trafalgar Square, the Strand, the Aldwych (with all its churches), the Royal Courts of Justice, St Paul's Cathedral and the Bank of England. Not bad for a single fare of £1. At various times I've used this to travel to and from work when I worked in Whitehall. The frequency in my experience tends towards the lower end (ie every 10 minutes) although it has improved in recent years. Still, it's a great way to see lots of sights for very little cash, and if you have an Oyster card or travelcard, you can use it as a hop-on, hop-off service.

Actually, one of the reasons that I was able to notice how it was new was because there happens to be protectors along the platforms, which is something that you definitely don't see on many of the other Tube stations. So all things considered it's a great station and looks shiny and new in every regard, and in that regard it looks more like a Los Angeles or Washington D.C station than it does a London Station.

Mansion House is a tube station in the City of London. It is on the Circle and District Lines, and…read morethe station is a short walk away from central London attractions, including St Paul's Cathedral and Cannon Street. The history of the station dates back to its opening in 1871. The station is steps only, I'm afraid - no step-free access here. It acts as an OSI with Blackfriars Station nearby, which has National Rail services. I found the station easy to navigate despite having multiple entrances and exits. The signage inside is clear and well-placed, making it easy to figure out which exit to use for specific streets or attractions. However, the subway tunnel connecting these exits left much to be desired. It felt poorly maintained, dimly lit, and dirty, and you could see cardboard boxes and litter everywhere. It also looks like it's being used as a sleeping area for homeless individuals. I didn't feel safe walking through this space, and I presume this may be why certain entrances and exits are closed at specific times. For a busy central London station popular with commuters and tourists, the state of this area was disappointing and felt inappropriate. The platform area, however, was rather standard. 3* - Handy location but they need to do something about the tunnel as a matter of urgency otherwise I'd prefer to use Blackfriars.

For those who don't know, this was the station that some dude got off to prove that he could literally run faster than the tube, namely by getting off here, and getting back on the exact same train at Cannon Street (I could probably do that in Melbourne, but I bet that I don't even have to run to do that). Still, the fact that it closes early is still quite annoying.

The Piccadilly Line runs through Holborn. Massive escalators carry people up and down to the train levels. Walls are lined with theater ads. Tap on and off with a credit card is easy. Coffee and pastry vendors stand outside the station.

If given the choice between getting off at the Holborn Station or Covent Garden, STOP HERE…read more The Piccadilly Line takes you from the airport directly to the strand, but it's best to stop here. The Covent Garden stop is a mess and with luggage, you'll need to wait in a crowded section to use the lift rather than walk up the numerous stairs. Just so messy. The Holborn station is so much less busy and so much more pleasant.
