Scenes from the 1998 romantic comedy "Sliding Doors" was shot on the Waterloo and City platform at the Waterloo underground station. Therefore it has to be the most romantic underground station on the network. Technically I can't find a reason to say that it isn't, so it is, ok? But still, I'm yet to have that moment where my reality splits into two halves after running down some stairs and being prevented from boarding a train. Usually I'm just stuck on the never ending travelators towards the Jubilee line all the while pondering why I didn't just change at another station.
The underground portion of the Waterloo station (I'm not going to refer to the above ground parts of the station in this review) are split very much into three parts - the Jubilee line, the Waterloo and City line and then every other line that comes through here. If you're lucky enough to not be using the Jubilee/Waterloo and City and have to change, then it's great! Otherwise it's nearly as bad as Bank and Monument for a switch over. Seriously, the Jubilee line is so far away from the others that it could almost be a separately named station. As for the Waterloo and City line, it is in some fifth dimension between the two that makes no sense at all as to how to get there, and I think only Doctor Who visits with any regularity because it takes a Tardis to get there.
However, the connections from all (well, except the Waterloo and City) the lines to the main railway services are great. But there is often no sense as to the direction of the escalators down to the Jubilee line (I think they're often used more for crowd control than actual transport) and the main area in front of those escalators is generally the biggest mess of people all going in conflicting directions anywhere on the Underground network.
But still, you might yet have a life altering situation where your realities split into two and you'll meet a nice Scottish chap with a love of Monty Python. How would you know if you don't try? (Just don't do it on one of the many, many days when the Waterloo and City line is closed for "maintenance" aka they let both the drivers have the same holiday). read more
