It's also a hot spot for people after a work out, and pet owners looking for a dog-friendly and safe park. Exercise. There are long pathways stretched across both level ground and hills for those after a solid work out, regardless of whether you're running or cycling. For those looking to build muscle tone, there are public gym sets available throughout the park, e.g. for push ups, chin ups, etc. If you're after group sports, Victoria Park also wraps around the Gregory Terrace tennis courts, the Grammar school basketball courts, and Centenary pool. A warning for female exercisers: don't pass through here at night because there was a case a few years ago where a woman was attacked. But if you swing by in the day time it's a safe zone. Leisure. There's a massive, fenced dog park in Victoria Park that sprawls across a well kept lawn. It could easily fit up to ten dogs and their owners, and is a large contained space in which to let even the most hyperactive dog off their leash. If you've come with young kids, the park just unveiled a fully refurbished playground area earlier this year. It's more of a climbing, jungle-gym set up, and sturdy enough for adults to join in on the fun. There are also large, thick-branched trees for climbing if you're feeling nostalgic.

Here are four reasons to bathe at the pool: One, a very relaxed individual who looks after the complex; two, a selection of traditional ice-blocks and lollies; three, individuals can sunbathe on green grass while watching the ancient palms that dot the skyline; four, the ability to swim in freedom without being yelled at for encroaching on the wrong lanes. I notice there have been some changes in the landscape of late. Tennis courts from the nearby high school have encroached, and there is now a concrete path cutting "the hill" in two. With any luck, though, this pool will not be ruined in much the same way many of the city's public pools have been. Let there be no quasi theme park, let there be no excessive squad practice, let there be no militant life guard yelling at you because you happened to make a splash when you dive. Let life be a series of swims at Musgrave Park Pool, with the odd bag of lollies thrown in. So close to the city and West End, for any who need a place to relax and refresh after a hard day at work, this is it. Forget the pub and instead enjoy the pool's dark blue waters.

Because swimmable…read morebeaches are at least an hour away from the city centre, the public pools are a summer hot spot for locals. Musgrave Park Pool is a particularly lovely public pool situated in central West End, right next to, you guessed it, Musgrave Park. While you're practicing your back stroke, you get to look out to the greenery, and a pretty nice city view. For me, nothing beats doing laps first thing in the morning. You will have to share the pool with other swimmers, but, really, during summer, you're always going to have to share the pool with a lot of people. Please note that learn to swim classes take place quite often, and so the lanes can suddenly change at very short notice. The man who runs the Musgrave Pool deserves a mention. He's a dude. He often runs the place single handedly. If there's a "Back in 5 mins" sign as you walk in AND out (as sometimes happens), do the right thing and pay for your entry. If only for the Musgrave Park Pool hero. You can buy your goggles and swimming paraphrenalia there if you need to. They've got your regular assortment of pool 'aids', like paddle boards too. It'll cost you $4.50 for adults, and $3.50 for concession (just bring proof of concession). Go on, have fun, and don't forget to wear sunscreen.

Downey Park is home to a lot of sports associations in Brisbane. The Women's Hockey Association of…read moreBrisbane, the Softball Association as well as the Brisbane Table Tennis Association can all be found along Downey Park. It is THE park to go to if you're an avid sports person of almost any kind. They've got heaps of basketball courts, and a grassy area with basketball hoops there if you just want to practice shooting hoops. They've got at least two football sized fields for use. A bikepath runs past Downey Park and so cyclists can either continue on or have a rest stop at the park. At the southern end of the park, there's a fenced off lease dog area with training jumps put in place for owners who want to train their dogs or teach them tricks. The sporting options are many, and the facilities are fantastic there. It's a great park that really allows you to do everything you could possibly want to do in a park, except perhaps skate. No skating facilities. Other than that, Downey Park is your oyster.

I sucked at them all and eventually came to terms with the fact that I'm just not athletic. In fact, I'm totally uncoordinated and pretty much the last person you should pick in that humiliating team selection game thing. My sporting pursuits meant that I spent a lot of time at Downey Park. Whether I was tripping over clods of dirt on the hockey fields, tripping over the bases on the softball diamonds, or tripping over a painted line on the netball courts (do you see a pattern here?), I was always at Downey Park on a Saturday morning in one hideous uniform or another. Because I live quite nearby, even though I've given up my dreams of Olympic gold I still come to Downey Park quite often. For one thing they have a nice big enclosed dog park area at the back which is ideal for my two crazy terriers, but there's also a nice walking path along the creek which will lead you to City Farm. The playground at Downey Park was recently redone and now includes a dizzying whirly-gig that I can never walk past without taking for a spin and some swings under the shade of big jacarandas. There's always something to do at Downey Park, even for those of us who are athletically-challenged.
