The skill sets of some helmers seem limited as a few sailboats with motors crapped out ... and they couldn't sail them to shore. The murky, muddy waters can get choppy as the high winds Kansas is known for whip up at times. As well, you are at the whim of Mother Nature: a drought has closed the park during the summer times you want to be there. Labor Day is great there. They have a killer fireworks show. We got a pretty good scoop from a local explaining ( legitimized my complaint) the ill tempered Mitch and his Partner when discussing things like Park cleanliness, broken glass in the so called beaches- all which haven't been maintained for at least 3 to 5 years depending on who you talk to. Mitch the officer/ of sorts, had the typical can't handle truth from a customer attitude. I complained that they describe beaches and fishing within walking distance- while true, the beaches are littered and over grown with trash, diapers ( literally watch a staff on a cart look at the trash on the beach and keep going leaving behind the obvious diaper/ glass bottles and large liter bottle of coca cola right where my family was sitting at the tables). I described the beach conditions with broken glass, shown in my previous reviews online, and how nasty the beaches ( all 3) really were. Then, When I talk to locals, they describe the two officers as" hot heads that dont care". Apparently True- I was shrugged off and told the conditions were a " matter of opinion. Rather unprofessional to say the least. I have yet to hear from and of the council members ( I emailed all) and haven't seen a response. I ALSO contacted the New Director- no response. Apparently tax payers may not have a voice, but while the beaches look like crap and are unsafe for children, bare feat and all, the 40 empty pavilions aren't enough...they can put up new pavilions for the cabins but can't spend a grand or 2 to clean up their beaches. Terrible business planning and management. Terrible experience except for the camp hosts- and completely unprofessional. I may return but unlikely soon- that place looks run down. Ol Mitch said it himself, he " doesn't swim in that lake" No kidding. I bet his girls wpuld be caught on them beaches.

The partly shaded concrete paths make the loop easy, and there's plenty of parking around the grounds. Along the way, you get a handful of highlights and distractions. The Junior Stonehenge solar salendar sculptures by Steve Murillo, which actualy function as an astronomical observatory. Lillie's gazebo, built in 2004 and overlooking the lake with its floating lily pad metal sculptures. The splash pad at Celebration Plaza, also added in 2004 and clearly popular on hot days. The park's long history shows up everywhere, from the half mile walking path that echoes the old horse racetrack to Murdock Street Bridge, originally built in 1925 and renovated in 2005. What makes the park stand out is how much variety is packed into a compact, walkable space. You can pass benches, picnic tables, restrooms, and the Kansas Wilkdlife Exhibit with its beavers, foxes, porcupines, mink, hawks and owls, all within a short stroll. The shade trees and open lawns give the whole area a relaxed feel, and the mix of historic markers and public art keeps the walk interesting. It's a great stop whether you're out for a quick loop, exploring the Riverside Park's long legacy dating back to the 1800s or just enjoying the breeze off the Little Arkansas River. Pretty cool concept I may add, it kinda reminds me of New Orleans's Royal Street. This street showcases old, new unique art ranging from photography to paintings. Ok back to talking about the Hudson. It's an old brick building nestled on the south part of the art strip that boasts an rustic urban feel. Kinda cool because this could've been a old torn down. But instead was renovated and made into a venue that host many events ranging from art show cases to weddings. Note: the Hudson is not an art gallery but instead a venue!
