Sometimes I head through the lovely cliff side neighborhoods just walk along the cliff. I'd often find my self hanging out here for hours. Sometimes at the beach or sitting on the cliffs studying for school. There's a special connection to this beach to where I currently live in Hawaii. This is where Duke Kahanamoku, Olympian, politician, surfer, spreader of Aloha introduced Surfing to Australia. Inside the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club there is a little memorial for the Duke with pictures, trophies, and his original wooden board he took to Australia. If you head up the stairs above the salt water pool there is an overgrown little park with a statue of the Duke Kahanamoku surfing on a boulder facing Freshwater beach. It's definitely a cool spot for anyone visiting from Hawaii. It's a great beach too with dramatic picturesque landscape. Ideally probably one of my top dream Neighborhoods to reside one day.

There are cooktops and plenty of rubbish bins. There's parking and nearby toilets which are also well maintained. Oh and it's dog friendly. The beach access is netted on one side so no pesky creatures can get in to eat the children. The sand is a little silty but it's clean. There's a pier from which children were daring each other to jump in the water. There's a water fountain and a shower to rinse your feet. Plus as we left and walked through the nearby neighborhood I met some lizard friends.

A harbourside beach reserve looking…read moreout to Chowder Bay that is dog friendly, has lots of open space, enclosed bathing area, a wharf that's popular for fishing, great picnic areas, brand new toilets and a fab playground to boot. The playground has sand flooring, great climbing structures, swings and even a disability swing. It's a complete mystery to me why it's so quiet during the week but perhaps that's why we love it so much. Parking is paid, which is fine for Mosman residenst with parking permits but a bit exxy otherwise. Bushwalks from the west end of the reserve are head around the Sydney Harbour National Park and though the start of the walk involves a number of steps once on the track it's pretty easy walking along well maintained track. There's an ice-cream van at the weekend and just over the beach is a Bacino Kiosk. Superb spot.

Wish I could have spend more time here exploring the area and all those small shops and eateries. But I was only here for a bit to put my toes in the sand and water... This beach was larger than I had imagined. A very long stretch of sand and gentle waves. Oodles of surfers taking advantage of the spots with more intense waves. Above the beach are large grassy areas with some seating options and walkways. Perfect place to hang out for a while or spend the day.

While it's definitely an old beach town, it feels like an oasis. The most gorgeous water I have ever seen. The whole area is filled with delicious food options, as well. From dining in town or closer to the beach, there's something for everyone. And, the shopping is incredible. Favorite eating spot: Common Supply. Check out the pictures, as usual the pictures do NOT do the pool and area justice. Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve. Manly Scenic Walkways - Do remember that "freak" waves can come any time and hit you while walking the pathway. Small cafe; I did not visit. Good for scuba diving and snorkeling - A maximum depth of 12 meters. We saw many classes out there teaching and training locals and tourists. Atmosphere - Lizard and bird (turkey) friendly, see pictures. Art, statues, educational information, etc. along the walking paths. Pedestrian friendly, no/restricted bikes allowed on many paths. In the main town, there is plenty of shopping, eating, and people watching. Pay parking lots. Service - Quick easy ferry from and to Manly. Much easier than driving. Express ferries are also available for a little more $$. "Smart beach" - See picture for definition. There are public toilets and showers, but there was a long line the entire time we were there. A little bit of a walk from Manly beach. Just follow the sea wall. It's a lot calmer for swimming,…read moresnorkeling, just getting your toes wet. The area between the two beaches is a protested reef. So be mindful. The sand did have bit of shells and ocean debris. There was also some beer caps floating around, so just be wary where you walk. If you're looking for a nice shaded spot, bring your own or relax by the side where the trees are. The do have public showers, toilets, rinse off area and a filtered water station. Plus a nice beachside cafe for your dinning pleasures. Took a lot of great photos, but do respect the signs and the law. And clean up after yourselves.

There was a Jazz Festival, so as we walked down their shop-lined streets we heard Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing" and Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry About a Thing. We walked down to the beach and saw hundreds of people stretched out on towels. We even saw sun worshippers stretched out on the rocks. The water was a two-tone mix of blue and turquoise and was just gorgeous. We did some shopping, picked up bug spray, a big floppy sun hat for me, and four bracelets for my wife, daughters-in-law and granddaughter. We also bought a cool wood puzzle of a Koala for my grandson. We visited Manly without really knowing anything about it, but man oh man were we glad we did. We loved every minute of our visit.

So easy to get to, we walked to the ferry from our hotel and got a direct boat to the Manly harbor. A couple of blocks walk and you are on the beach. The weather was not all that great for swimming so we watched the surfers for a bit then headed on the trail that takes you out to the North Head and Burragula lookout. The sights and paths along the way are beautiful. We saw an echidna moseying along the way which was cool.

This beach isn't as swimmable as the other ones in Sydney, but is abundant with views, walking paths, and photo opportunities. Why a 3 though? I'm writing this review at the end of my trip, so I can now compare it to the other beach parks here. This one has many tourists and is quite commercialized. But I'd say give this a visit if you're a visitor like myself!
