Their store…read morein the Needlemakers sells menswear, but in spite of that it's probably my favourite of the two because some of the clothes are pretty cool. Amongst other things they sell flat caps, fedoras, beautiful butter soft brown leather journals and coin purses (£21.20). They also sell boys-y things like old fashioned mess tins and constructable cardboard dinosaurs. There is some cross over of stock from the high street store, for example with their own brand scents (£29.50) which come very tastefully packaged in plain glass bottles, save for a coloured button denoting which of their four scents is inside. They also sell interesting old fashioned notebooks at both stores. The high street store is larger, and has a café at the back, although it is also more twee. It stocks women's and children's clothes and accessories aimed at the mummies of Lewes. Saying that they do have some lovely things, and the cakes are very tasty. They certainly don't go in for the minimalism of other nearby shops like Flint and Adamczewski, and as a result it's a good place to go for a rummage if you are gift shopping.

As you go in they have fantastic wool blankets, jewellery, perfume, hats and scarves. Then they have two or three rails of fabulous women's clothes-all from ethical brands, all reasonable prices and all that great style on the go, chic comfort look that I love. Then you hit toys and kitchenalia- cake stands, milk jugs, wooden letters to decorate, soft toys and kid's clothes. Finally, at the back a big finale of white wooden tables-a cafe! Genius.

The have a great selection of cards here too, and I picked up a few for forthcoming birthdays. They have a large selection of toys here, a bit different from the norm, so great if you need a gift for a child. They also have a good selection of photo frames, stationary, kitchenware and candles etc. A great place for gifts if you don't want to spend over the odds.

There is also a balloon service offered which is where the company excels. They can provide the run-of-the-mill 50th birthday balloons but also offer a balloon decorating service which would add a touch of originality to your birthday, engagement or wedding party. The ladies who work in the shop are always nice too, which is a great asset, especially on a typical rainy Lewesian day.

It's one of those shops where you could get yourself a floral-patterned trowel and a cast iron bird-table, but you wouldn't go to get a pair of secateurs... unless you wanted floral ones, I suppose. It's quite twee and Cath Kidson-esque, but seeing as I don't have a garden its emphasis on style rather than substance doesn't worry me - I'd more likely be in here looking for a present for an elderly relative. It sells cards and wrapping paper too, so the owners are obviously conscious of the fact that people are more likely to be in here purchasing for somebody else. One thing that does set this particular twee home/gift shop apart is its good selection of rare and second-hand garden and cookery books, which really is a useful resource and makes it a more unique place to buy a gift for a fanatical gardener or cook.

I love this shop!…read more It's full of weird, random and quirky bits and bobs, and it is usually my first port of call when I am looking to buy a gift or present for someone. If you're a cat lover you are in for a treat, as there are plenty of cat related items in the shop, from lamps, to nail stickers and mugs! I spend a good ten minutes laughing out loud at a book of pigeons that was in there (who knew some pigeons could look so bizarre!? I probably should have bought the book; I'm laughing to myself about the pigeons now). There really is so much stuff in there, that you would have to spend an age in there to see everything. There are bits and pieces crammed into every corner of the store! My only qualm is that because everything is piled everywhere, there is not a lot of room to move! If there are more than 3 people in the shop or you are carrying a few shopping bags, you aren't going to last long in there.

However after paying, one of us checked the receipt and the full Visa card number and expiry date were printed on the receipt! This seemed sketchy as every other receipt always had the first numbers starred out. In calling the bank they agreed this was fishy and cancelled the card as a precaution. Just something to watch out for when shopping!

You will be overwhelmed with the calm, relaxed atmosphere, and equally amazed at the lack of pressure on you to buy something!! The staff are great, friendly, warm and knowledgeable....a real pleasure to be around. Light, airy and full of pleasant and sensuous "nose teasers"..and such an interesting book selection. If my wife is with me....I can't get through Hassocks without going into here....but I don't mind. You just gotta go.....
