Not a fully seasoned market day gal but definitely not my first rodeo. First, Lions Club parking is now a $10 donation up from the $5 it used to be. There is one $5 lot but it's a cute walk. With shopping & an almost 4 year old kid, we opted for a close parking lot. There is something for everyone here. Vintage, garden art, pottery, freeze dried candy, jellies, hats, boots, hot wheels. There is even a donation only booth for a pet shelter/rescue. This is an open air market so weather is a huge factor here. Thankfully today was the first pre-fall cool front so the breeze & mid-80s awaited us! Bring your wagons/carts, coolers, fresh eyes & enjoy! Places like this remind me Texas is a beautiful place to live.

Arrive early as parking fills up fast! $5 fee to park at some of the lots and bring a wagon to tow all your purchased goodies. Maps are provided at the entrances and be prepared to browse hundreds of booths/vendors selling everything- you name it! Plants, antiques, books, food, home made decor, garden decor, etc. Concession stands throughout the market- selling BBQ, burgers, breakfast tacos, sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. This market is entirely run by friendly volunteers. Entertainment (live bands) are located at each stand. We ended up buying a beautiful plant (dessert rose), cute metal TX armadillo decor, a large metal round TX star art to place on a large stone in our front yard, an antique bike planter, and a large metal wind spinner. Drove through downtown Wimberley afterwards, but there was so much tourist traffic, that it was impossible to park. Looked like there were lovely restaurants along the river as well. Checking out downtown may have to be on a separate day. Cute cowboy boot statues are decorated throughout the city, great for a photo op. We look forward to attending market day once again in the future.

Honestly, you can spend quite some time in here checking it all out. The cashier attendant was very welcoming. Blanco was a little crowded today, what with the day being so cool and sunny. So stores had their share of foot traffic. I purchased a pair of cute earrings for $10. Most items in the shop were very reasonably priced. Go there when in Blanco.

This is the second time I have been here and both times I felt like it might just be the 8th wonder…read moreof the world. Went to the "Dirt Dauber" festival here which was a celebration of local pottery. Artists were set up everywhere, there were workshops/demos/contests, live music, pets and kiddos running around, hot dogs, and free beer (you were simply encouraged to purchase a vessel in which to pour it in). Everyone was ridiculously talented - and so friendly. The local community (san marcos I guess) is so supportive, but folks came out from all over in support. One highlight was they had the pottery wheels set up to play! SO. MUCH. FUN. (especially after beer) I totally want a wheel now, but it's easy to see it takes quite a bit of practice along with significantly more artistry than I possess. (Oh, and that scene from Ghost? Totally realistic because it's seriously erotic for some reason.) I am fortunate enough to be friends with the niece of the owners of the property (Beverley and Billy Ray rock!), and am unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to get a tour of the whole place. This includes their personal home which is a magical maze full of treasures. I have never seen so much art and sculpture and pottery and trinkets and souvenirs and momentos...the list goes on. It's a feast for the eyes. Everywhere you look there is something to explore. The house is divided up by season as well; for example, there is a "summer room" downstairs that has A/C, or the "Spring room" which has a handmade wooden murphy bed platform ON THE BALCONY that pulls down to sleep on. There is a fishtank for a wall by the tub indoors, or one could use the outdoor shower they crafted. They even have their own giant bar attached to the home. Walking around there is surreal; it makes you want an entirely different life. We also got to see a couple studios in which the owners (and visiting artists) work. So friggin cool. They do all sorts of workshops and also host celebrations/festivals/exhibitions of sorts (like the one I went to, or a salsa competition (the kind you eat ;). I encourage you to find any reason you can to get out there. The whole experience felt hippy dippy trippy to the max; by that I mean it didn't reek of patchouli or pot, but rather of a better place and time gone past where everyone was encouraged to be whoeverthefuck they want to be and express that however they wish (in dress, through art, or the way they live, who they love, and so on) and all were accepted, and appreciated. Good music, drank, and people all mashed up. Love.

We were greeted by a surly old man that asked us if we were there to "taste" wine or just to drink it. I assume that he could see the confusion on our faces, so he explained that if we just wanted to drink it, he would pour us some and let us do that, but if we wanted to "taste" it he would put us through his "Wine 101 Course." We, obviously, chose to taste. He proceeded to walk us through the reasoning for swirling the glass, how to properly smell the wine, the proper way to taste it and a few other steps to get the full experience and pick out all of the little nuances of the wine. It was very informative and we really enjoyed it, and learned to appreciate wine even more. He has a "Wine 201" as well, but I don't think I am ready to disappoint him by failing that course yet.

And they have rotating art installations, some of which were just uber cool when we stopped in (please see pics). The proprietor's Warren and his wife (sorry, I didn't get her name) were very welcoming and took time to show us around. We will definitely be back! Wine and art without pretentiousness. Yee haw!!!
