I remember being dragged kicking and screaming to my hometown library as a kid...it was dark, dingy, dreary (and any other depressing alliterative words you can think of (gawd my English teacher would be proud of me using alliterative in a sentence, never was any good at English!), I digress...). Fast forward twenty-something years and going to the library is actually quite a pleasant experience!
Bridgeton library is easily accessible by bus along London Road and situated directly across from Bridgeton train station and infamous umbrella. It is located in the once derelict Olympia building which has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now a stunning building to look at and admire.
When you enter it feels bright and spacious (no cobwebs here!). Aside from the mass of books, there are PCs (over a dozen) dotted around for public use, free wifi if using your own laptop or mobile and plenty of seating to do so. There is even a cafe serving coffees, paninis and breakfast items amongst other things!
Staff are friendly (we got chatting about gin for a good 10 mins tonight lol) and if the book you're after is located at one of Glasgow City Councils other libraries, they offer a fab service where it will be transported to Bridgeton free of charge to save you a trek across town - yip, you read right, free and council in the same sentence! ;-) Plus, Tuesday and Thursday are late night opening till 8pm which is always handy to know!
All in, a great addition to Bridgeton Cross! Once I've tried the cafe and had a proper browse at the selection of books (head firmly stuck in the cookery section tonight!) I'll update and hopefully bump it up to 5 stars! read more
