The kids section is large and comprehensive, with all the favourites accounted for. However, special mention must go to the classics section which has a particularly extensive Dickens collection. Pretty much every newspaper is accounted for, as well as plenty of magazines and periodicals.

It isn't a great place for the specialist, unless it it is in crime novels or science fiction, where they have some idiosyncratic choices, and the CDs are mostly mainstream pop with a bit of classical. But the staff are very helpful and, while it might be a sad comment, it is peaceful and underused. Besides, they have a large section for kids, set away from the rest of the building, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed.

My local library is Clarkston library but often if they don't have something then Giffnock will have so I take a little trip down to collect my book. It's really handy as Clarkston library is right next to Clarkston train station, so I can hop onto the train and get off at the next stop three minutes along the road which is Giffnock. Even more handy is the fact that Giffnock library is right next to the station too, so minimal walking effort required, fabulous! I don't use this library so much now but I used to all the time when I was younger as I was a total book worm. I still am a book worm but tend to use Amazon most of the time when I need a book. The staff are always super helpful and can give you great recommendations if like me, you struggle to pick a good book and after reading a couple of pages give up as you're bored stiff.

I was waiting for the train,…read moreand I needed to use a toilet, I was almost in tears needing to go, as I missed train and had to wait for another. They kindly directed me to their toilets to use. I never seen much of the library as I was there for one thing. But it looked a very clean looking place inside of what I seen. Apart from their selection of books,CDs & DVDs being better than before they're doing more such as an afternoon craft programme for young children & a teenage chill time. There are a bank of PCs which are free and I believe MacMillan also come in. The only downside is no comfortable seating to make me want to come and stay a while. Maybe there's a reason for that but with only hard chairs & small study desks I didn't spend as long there as I would have liked.

Indeed, Glasgow has a wide range of libraries that are fairly well equipped. This meaning, as M.K. has mentioned, their stock - book wise - can be a little on the dated side and slightly limited. In saying this, if your desired book is in another Glasgow library somewhere else you can easily fill out a request, be informed how long your wait may be and pick it/them up at your local library. Meanwhile, there's a good range of magazines, dvds, cds and videos that you can flip through before popping onto one of their computers. These allow you to surf the worldwide web, type up any important emails/letters, shop and also print/photocopy and even - I believe - now scan documents. Everything you could need in an easily accessible place and all either free (or for a marginal fee e.g. printing and photocopying). This particular library is really local, handy and has a lovely, quiet and relaxed vibe to it. Perfect.

They are warm, reassuringly musty, located in beautiful buildings and best of all - free to everyone. There were no doubt fears that libraries would be left behind in the Internet age, with books becoming redundant, over sites like Wikipedia and youtube. Thankfully, libraries have moved with the times and the Couper has done exactly the same - by introducing computers complete with decent software and Internet access. There are times when I've gone down there and used the computers and I've had no problem with access. The place is always stocked with recent magazines and newspapers. On the book front, things are less impressive but the Couper can't be blamed for that. People simply don't use the library there as much as they used to and return and take books from elsewhere. As a result, you tend to see the same old stuff on the shelf. I delight, however, in seeing something that has just been released and am proud that my local library has managed to pick it up. There is also an impressive children's section which I used a lot in my youth. Despite us now living in an Internet world where information can be accessed in less than a second, the death of libraries would be unforgivable. We should be proud and I'm proud of the Couper.

You can photocopy, use the internet, print stuff, rent DVDs, bring your kids for storytime, check out books in Polish, take a lifelong learning course or come to hear an author speak. The library isn't exactly bursting with literature, though. There is an awful lot of chick lit! But they can and will get whatever you want; you just need the foresight to order it in advance.

Pollok Estate has been the home of the Maxwell family since the mid-13th century. The current house…read moreis an impressive 18th century mansion which was gifted by Mrs Anne Maxwell Macdonald to the City of Glasgow in 1966. This 'gift' included the house's art collection and 361 acres of surrounding parkland. Within the house you can see collections of: Spanish art, antique furniture, silverware, ceramics and an impressive library. Rather sweetly, these collections were gathered through genuine interest and love of art, ceramics and books (instead of the mercenary reasons you'll find elsewhere). Furthermore, these collections are presented in a realistic setting throughout the house - with a bedroom, library, smoking room and billiard room on open display of the public. The items held within are kept preserved by limited natural light (if you move the shutters and/or blinds in order to look at the view please return these to their original state) and no photography. On the lower level of the house, you can have a look round a few of the servants rooms (this is where the photos were taken with permission). There is also a gift shop and a small, convenient tearoom which serves decent food at fairly reasonable prices. This is a lovely house, with tons of history and interest. For instance, visiting guests to this house over its lifetime have even included Chaucer.

I spent a few hours here, waiting for an appointment, and did find it tough to gather enough interestng reading material, about from The Hulk collection, which suggests that this is not the most well stockerd of places, and there are not that many spaces for casual readers.
