Having been fairly recently responsible for bringing a small person into this world (as a parent, not through my human trafficking enterprise) i would, nay, must give praise to the Hillhead Library for their "bounce and rhyme" sessions on Friday afternoons. Now, just to clarify. The bouncing and rhyming in question is of the nursery rhyme variety and not of the baby booty shakin' R n B/ gangsta rap stylee' which my brain first suggested would be the case.....its amazing what lack of sleep does to the mind. The session lasts for about 30 to 40 mins and includes singing and dance moves along to a selection of nursery songs. Its fun, easy going and more importantly...freeee! A great way for new parents to introduce the little ones to songs and movement, and also a nice way for parents to meet other each other over a post "rhyme" coffee in one of the local cafes. Hillhead Library come for the books, stay for the bounce....i'll wager that's never been said before.

It's not huge (but then I am used to The Saltire Centre), but has a decent selection of books... and free wifi. It's in a good location near Hillhead tube station and is usually quite quiet (as libraries should be!). There are worse ways to spend your afternoon than in here with a cup of coffee.

The kids section is large and comprehensive, with all the favourites accounted for. However, special mention must go to the classics section which has a particularly extensive Dickens collection. Pretty much every newspaper is accounted for, as well as plenty of magazines and periodicals.

Conveniently located next to the hospital, Langside Library is a little more old fashioned than the…read morenew libraries that are springing up across Glasgow: even the book selection is dated, with the Mind Body and Spirit Section specialising in the Abrahamic religions and the graphic novel section a mere whimper. It isn't a great place for the specialist, unless it it is in crime novels or science fiction, where they have some idiosyncratic choices, and the CDs are mostly mainstream pop with a bit of classical. But the staff are very helpful and, while it might be a sad comment, it is peaceful and underused. Besides, they have a large section for kids, set away from the rest of the building, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed.

I rather fancied some of the nicely presented salads and sandwiches coming out of the Mitchell's cafe, but as it wasn't lunch o'clock I didn't bite. Last year I attended a talk by AC Grayling in the comfortable and perfectly formed lecture theatre (part of the Aye Write Festival I think), and more recently was blown away by the George Wyllie Retrospective. The world could do with more George Wyllies! His sculptures, installations, art and poetry are enough to make a career curmudgeon smile. I think the exhibition is running for a few more months yet. Go there! If you have just half an hour to spare, do step into the permanent puppet exhibition to the right of the main reception desk. Some of those puppets are over a thousand years old and hail from all corners of the world. They don't seem to mind if you want to snap away and take photos. Would definitely recommend a visit to the Mitchell Library. Oh, and they have lots of books too.

I was here today (25/06) for the Scotch Whisky Association's exhibition, which was first class. Detail on the making of and maturation of Scotland's various whiskies as well as the history of branding, advertising and marketing of the sweet stuff. Highly recommended AND it's free!

At the centre of the Dennistoun community, it provides a place lose yourself in a really good book, or marvel at their quite impressive selection of CDs that are available to rent. When I recently received a huge reading list from my university, there was no chance I'd be able to buy them all, if any! So I took a wee walk to my local library with my list in hand, wondering if they might be able to point me in the right direction. The friendly girl behind the desk took my list and searched the library catalogue for each of the books I had on my list, managing to find a couple that were held at other libraries and she happily ordered them in for me. The service provided here is second to none, as I found out when I received a pleasant phone call informing me that my book had arrived and was ready for collection. Dennistoun Library is a great place, that locals should take more advantage of. They have an extensive list of interesting books, with something for everyone, and they are more than happy to order items from other libraries for you. They provide free Internet access and rent out the latest CDs and DVDs for just £1 a time. This place is ideal for everyone from young kids attending their reading clubs, to students making use of the study room and older folks simply enjoying a read of the paper on one of the comfy sofas.

Though it's fairly small they have a great selection and the staff on hand are brilliant. Although this isn't my local I do love it. I reserve a lot of books through the system and the ones I can't get at Baillieston tend to be picked from Dennistoun and sent to Baillieston for me. Love it!

Sadly there is no free Wi-Fi at the moment and the staff could be friendlier but they're just small points for me. More important and the reason why it doesn't have 5 stars, is because they only open one evening a week. A city centre library should be open a few more evenings so those of us who work can use it more often. I'm sure there must be a way of closing off the art gallery so this can happen. Anyhoo, it is worth a visit as the sections also include graphic novels, modern classics, lgbt literature and everything in between. They can also order in books from other libraries.

It's quite busy during the day and has a good buzz about it, more like a cafe with books than a library with a cafe. Depending on what you're after, this will either be good or bad. A handy wee place I can see me going to alot over the summer.

A fair sized, light and airy building, with a wonderful dome skylight with massive chandelier, Woodside is a pleasant place to whittle away an hour so so perusing the wordy wears on offer. Ad to this an ample array of fairly new ish PCs open to public use and you find yourself with a good decent public library. In terms of staff on hand, everyone seems to be fairly helpful and cheery to boot so no complaints here!!!

The range of books is good and they should have something for everyone: they even have books in foreign languages for both children and adults. They have a good children's section and a small reference section. Although it is quite small, I would definitely say it is worth a look, especially as you live nearby. All you need to become a member and have access to all the Glasgow libraries, is proof of ID and address.

Love of my life, this library system, I'm telling you!…read more Bailileston Library is located on Baillieston main street, right across fromt he Post Office, so it's always doubly handy. They have a small car park, which is a lifesaver most days as the main street can be terribly busy. Everything here was completely refurbished over the past few months, and is now gleaming like never before. A good half of the library is dedicated to children's books, as it always has been, which is amazing. They also have about 8 or 10 computer stations for internet access, some media (CDs, etc.) and a nice selection. IF there is anything you can't find you can look it up on the website and they will have it sent from another library to Baillieston for you to pick up. The staff are brilliant, super friendly and accommodating. They also call you up when your reservations have arrived. They have a book club and some other author events, and will direct you to other events in the Glasgow area. Top notch!

Whiteinch library is a historical place. Not only is it a very old building, but inside there are…read morea few very interesting artefacts celebrating Glasgow's past, with many photographs of local streets and buildings from the early 1900s to the '60s. There is also a display case about the Boy's Brigade, with old medals, photographs and clothing from back in the day. Although an old building, Whiteinch Library is quite modern inside. As well as tables and chairs in a quiet room ideal for studying students, there are a few computers with free internet access. The fact that you don't have to book these in advance and can just jump on any time makes is great - unlike Partick Library where you have to book. With only a few computers you'll be lucky to find one spare though. There is a large, separate children's room, as well as the main room, which has a great selection of fiction and non-fiction books. There are also DVDs and CDs that can be rented out. Ironically, even though one always expects a library to have a strict rule of keeping quiet, the librarians at the desk here were happily broadcasting their summer holiday plans to the entire room. There are a large selection of books, DVDs, videos, CDs, tapes and magazines. All easily accessible, well organised and extremely tempting. As Gordon has highlighted there are also computer and Internet services which are super handy. Surprisingly, this place is usually relatively quiet which means quick, service and your pick of the place. Ideal for finding a cosy corner to get some work done in peace and quiet. Just as long as the librarians aren't discussing their weekend or holidays...
