Great local whiskey selection and super fresh oysters. Thanks for the great meal after a long day of traveling.

    Islay House - Living Room

    Islay House

LONG, HONEST REVIEW- TLDR, this place is a SCAM and you should spend your hard-earned money…read moreelsewhere. Any positive reviews of this place have to be falsified or are from before the property was repurchased. AVOID IF YOU VALUE YOUR MONEY. We booked 3 rooms at the Islay House in October 2025. It was an expensive booking, which is to be expected given there are very few accommodations in Bridgend and on Islay. Before we checked in, there was a large storm that unfortunately interrupted shipping of gas (necessary for heating) to Islay, which I understand is completely out of their control. However, this resulted in us having NO HEAT and NO HOT WATER for the duration of our stay. Normally, I would write this off and shrug, because it happens. Why the one star review? Because the staff INTENTIONALLY did not disclose to us that there was no hot water at check in, and that we would not have hot water or heat for the duration of our stay. Again, TERRIBLE customer service, but maybe not even worth a review. We were REPEATEDLY assured by staff that we would get a partial refund. REPEATEDLY. We made the reservation through Booking.com so they said we had to file the request through Booking. I asked the staff REPEATEDLY to put this in writing (to ensure an agreement regarding a refund), which they assured me they would do. I had a really nasty feeling that they would not do it but eventually we had to leave for the ferry so we hoped against hope they would do the right thing. We filed the complaint with Booking 10 days ago, and just received word that "we could not come to an agreement with the property regarding a refund", so we are getting nothing back. Absolutely disgraceful and completely disrespectful. I wish I could leave a positive review because there were positives of this property, however such blatant and disgusting SCAMS deserve nothing more than 1 star. Book at your own risk. Will update review if anything changes.

Saving the best for last: quite the awesome bar, fully stocked with local scotch and an incredible on-site restaurant ran by a talented chef. When in Islay, stop by.

Lochside Hotel - Vegan falafel burger, comes with chips and salad

We wanted to try their mushroom & walnut pâté but it was sold out when we went. So we each just ordered their vegan burger (£12.95). The burger patty is made of falafel and is pretty nicely done. The buns are standard. I liked the addition of sundried tomatoes underneath the burger. The accompanying salad and chips were fine as well. The chips are served with a rather bland vegan paprika mayo. Service is fine, friendly enough, and quick. The place itself has a beautiful view of the water. All in all, mediocre bar food but a pleasant spot and the vegan options are welcomed in a place where not many are available.

I can't vouch for the rooms here but man do they serve some great food and drinks! On my recent…read moretrip to the beautiful Island of Islay, the owner of the B&B we stayed at suggested having a meal here. This was some very good advice it turned out. I had a lunch and a couple of dinners in the dining room. This dining room, by the way, has a fantastic view for you to enjoy while you sit back and relax over your meal. The service was fantastic. It was just attentive enough without being intrusive and it was quick. Ah but how's the food you ask? Well, let me tell you. The food was delicious. I had steak and ale pie, fish & chips and salmon here and every meal was delicious. They also have a bar here which is (not surprisingly) very well stocked with whiskys. With this, you'll also have a few of the local Islay Ales on tap (cask conditioned) as well as some of the bigger beer names you'd expect to see in Scotland. Regardless of whether or not you stay here, you should definitely treat yourself and have a meal. I don't think you'll regret it!

Staying at No. 1 Charlotte Street was a highlight of our trip to Islay. Staff were warm and welcoming, and helped us with a number of needs during our stay, including advising on and booking a taxi to the airport and arranging laundry service. The included breakfast was among the best we had during our tour through Scotland, period. The made-to-order Scottish breakfast option was delicious and provided us with sufficient protein before going out to taste some whisky, while the cold breakfast bar was a lovely option for a quicker meal. I do wish that we had visited the attached bar; had we stayed in town longer, we would have tried it. Another helpful amenity was the upstairs lounge, which offers a comfortable living room type area for guests to enjoy some takeaway, or to make use of the provided books or board games. I could see this being a wonderful perk for group travel. The outdoor seating area would have been lovely if we had visited at a warmer time of year. The one real downside is that there is no lift, requiring guests to carry suitcases up and down the grand staircase. One of the staff members helped me with mine, which was lovely. For travelers unfamiliar to the UK, it's helpful to note that many hotels do not have lifts, especially older buildings like this one, so this wasn't that unusual.

I had booked two rooms and my room was exactly as expected, bright cheery and had a great view over the harbour. The bed mattress was a a little too soft for my liking and I think might slowly sinking towards the end of its life. That said I did sleep well. The bathroom sink had a loose hot tap as the plastic washer had snapped underneath it. I imagine that trying to get a simple thing like that fixed on Islay is an issue and it caused no problem as the tap worked fine but I would worry how long it might be before a leak happens. The crew who serviced the rooms did a fantastic job and cleanliness was top notch. Breakfast was simple but tasty and there was a good selection of choices. All the staff I engaged with were delightful but a special mention must be given to the ever smiling Kim on reception. Despite facing the main road in Port Ellen the hotel was quiet. The weather was unseasonably warm and dry and the sun shone long and hard; thus the view from the front of the hotel was fantastic. My friend was disappointed in his room choice. Nothing wrong with the room but simply too small for him and he had selected the wrong room. As the hotel was full he was unable to move room for two nights thus he decided to check out and move to the Islay hotel. No 1 Charlotte Street had no obligation to offer him a refund as it was his choice. However they choose to refund the two nights he had not stayed which is simply 'above and beyond'. If you want a reasonably priced in Port Ellen I would heartily recommend this place and do say hello to Kim from me.....she is a commensurate hospitality professional with many years experience and is also extremely charming.
