A well kept course, and fun to play…read more I hadn't played Markham before, but I've wanted to since I first saw it years ago while driving through Markham. I was there for a bike thing, but I made note it was there Last week I was to play with some friends and I said let's make the trek out west to Markham. It's always fun to try a new course. we got there at the early hour of 830. Plenty of people in line to get in, but most were for off-road biking. When we got to the course(far back right) there was only one more group starting off. After a couple warm ups we were were off. A couple water holes early but that was it for the agua. After that there were other tough holes in woods, but the back 9 was mostly open. The course had a nice layout, it never overlapped itself like I've seen a couple times lately. There were a few holes that gave a chance at a birdie for us amateurs which is always a plus. We all ended with decent scores, and the we could definitely do better on the next time. We will have to make it back soon to see if we can actually back that up.

Friendly disc golfers too. We left a disc at a hole and they put it on our car for us when we got back. Found a disc and texted the guy, but he had gone home to Illinois and said we could keep it. Poinciana Park is a nicer than average neighborhood park. It is named for one of my favorite trees…read morewhich is instantly recognizable by its bright red blooms. Spread out over six acres, this park has an exercise trail running around the perimeter of the park, a fenced in basic playground with climbing structures, slide, and swings, basketball courts, picnic pavilions with tables and grills, 2 tennis courts, sand volleyball court, and open area for play. Every neighborhood in Coral Springs has a park. I discovered this one while running errands in the nearby Royal Eagle Plaza. The park was the perfect place to walk around and get some fresh air after Ian had passed although parts of the walking trail were under water and a lot of palm fronds were down. This is a very nice place to take the kids to walk, play, have a picnic, or exercise on one of the athletic courts.

There are twenty-two communities in Coral Springs and they each have their own park with a playground and then there are also the larger town parks with sports fields and more athletic amenities. Six Acres Whispering Oaks is one of the neighborhood parks. There is a small parking area, large open play space, picnic tables and pavilion, and benches. The park is so open that you can't tell where some of the backyards of the neighborhood homes end and the park begins. Whispering Oaks has two fenced in play areas for children, one with just swings and the other with swings and a slide and climbing structure. Normally the playgrounds in Coral Springs are not fenced in but Whispering Oaks is surrounded by the Stranahan River. The fence keeps the kiddos in a secure area and away from the water. While walking near the water I saw several ducks, ibis, and a great egret. The water makes this park a great place to bird watch. Or come for a picnic or play. Coral Springs parks are always beautifully kept and they provide the community with an inviting place to take in nature in the city.

The two-year, $15 million renovation completely reimagined this 3.6-acre waterfront park. After visiting several times, I can say that even though it isn't particularly large, the design is so thoughtfully done that I always seem to discover something new. One of my favorite features of the redesigned park is the Riverwalk Terrace, a peaceful gathering space with shaded seating nestled among a grove of palms. A gift from the Motwani family, prominent local hoteliers and developers behind Merrimac Ventures, the terrace features curved benches and Adirondack chairs that invite visitors to sit back, relax, and enjoy the park. This peaceful retreat is the perfect place to unwind while watching boats and yachts glide along the New River. I imagine the Seminoles paddling this very stretch of water by canoe as they made their way too Ivy Stranahan's school and trading post during Ft. Lauderdale's pioneer past. Today, the terrace offers a wonderful vantage point for watching the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade as it makes its way along the river. But you don't need a special event to appreciate this spot. Any day is a good day to settle in and enjoy the shade of the palms, and take in what I consider one of the best river views in Fort Lauderdale.

There are lots of tall tress in the park providing shade. It is important to note that the following is prohibited while you are in the park: tobacco products, motorized vehicles, pets including dogs, and alcohol. This park is great for exercise, taking the kids to play, or having a picnic. I was pleased to see that they finally banned smoking. While I enjoyed walking the exercise path amenities are limited so unless you live in the neighborhood you can skip this in favor of one of Boca Raton's larger parks. like nearby Sugar Sand.

This county park is another one of the few natural pine scrub areas left in Florida. And after…read morevisiting Highland Scrub Natural area not far away, we decided to drive over and visit this very rare to south Florida natural preserve park, as well. The park is located right on a fairly busy street just south of the middle school. There was a lot of traffic traveling north and south here, but only one other car with one person had stopped when we were there. And the parking lot here is quite large. The person was relaxing in one of the shady pavilions having a late lunch. This sand pine scrub park is accurately described. The ground is sandy like beach sand and there is dry, desert like vegetation here. If you read the history, it explains how many thousands of years earlier Florida was mostly under seawater -- except for these high ridges that attracted vegetation and unique animals. And if you visit, it will remind you of parts of old Florida prior to urbanization. I like plants and flowers and found many interesting ones of both types to photograph here. As it was quite hot the day we came, we didn't walk the majority of the hiking trails. There are two trails -- one paved and one "natural". And they're both considered easy trails if you're dressed appropriately with comfortable shoes (which we were not). But we did also get to see some animal tracks -- some of which I'm not too fond. If you are new to Florida or new to the area, or just curious to what very old Florida looked like, this is a unique experience. It's quiet and relaxing and feels a world away from city life. I'm so glad that they've preserved this rare and ecologically sensitive spot since most have disappeared.

It feature 82 homes and is considered a safe neighborhood close to schools and shopping Dawn Park is a spacious four acres. There is a small playground with a slide and climbing equipment. The park also features shade trees, benches, a picnic table, and open space. However, there is no dedicated parking or restroom facilities. An important point to note is that the park is not fenced in, so you'll need to keep an eye on children to ensure they don't wander off. It ended up being the perfect place to sit for a few minutes while I planned my next destination. If you're looking for a park to take a nature hike consider nearby Jerry Morgan Park.

Pride Promoters Park in Coral Springs may be small, but its recent renovation has transformed this…read morehalf acre neighborhood park into a special recreational space. Originally built in the 1990s, the park is named after the local civic group Pride Promoters, which formed in the late 1980s to organize neighborhood beautification campaigns and encourage community pride in some of the city's older residential areas. At just half an acre, Pride Promoters Park fits the definition of a pocket park, a small public space designed to provide outdoor recreation and gathering opportunities within a neighborhood. Despite its compact size, the newly renovated park offers an impressive range of amenities, including public art, an accessible playground, renovated basketball court, outdoor fitness equipment, benches, picnic tables, shaded areas, pavilions, and an open play area. The renovation was estimated to cost $345,000, including $225,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funding. The project took a little longer than originally planned, with the reopening delayed while the new asphalt basketball court was completed and allowed to cure before its surface was painted. What I especially like about this renovation is how much was accomplished in such a small space. The improvements make the park more functional and inviting while giving nearby residents a place to play, exercise, relax and spend time outdoors. Pride Promoters Park is a great example of how even a tiny neighborhood park can have a big impact. With its new amenities and welcoming design, this little pocket park has been elevated into something truly special for the Coral Springs community.
