If I've got time to sit down, the pie comes with fresh cream. The staff aren't always the friendliest bunch, but it doesn't bother me much. They're quick and professional at what they do. The cafe is always clean, although it is a little dark but it's a warm darkness, like the inside of a hug. The car park is another massive positive for this place (car parking in Mt Barker is an ongoing battle) it's big and there's plenty of turning room. I'm always able to get a park. Many of the cakes are decidedly German - Black Forest, Sacher, Bee-sting cakes. They are certainly worth paying for - these are the kinds of complex layered cakes that take a whole day to make. There really is no point doing it yourself. As well as cakes they have pastries, berliners, pasties, pies and bread rolls. While some things are certainly better than your usual chain-store cake, others could do with a little more special attention. The Black Forest could do with more kirsch IMHO, and their breads aren't particularly special. The cake decorating style is a little old-fashioned for my taste - all cream swirls and chocolate flakes. Or big ostentatious shards of chocolate on the birthday cakes. Rheinland definitely make good cakes - but not *great* cakes.

My nutella croissant looked beautiful and perfect with a line of nutella that wrapped through the pastry. It was not soggy either. It almost hardened with the pastry like a chocolate crust.
