It has a park like feel to it and tall and mature pines trees scattered throughout it. Unfortunately most of the gravestones were made of softer stones and the harsh Cape Cod winters did a job on them. Some are lying on the ground, others are broken in half and many others are now impossible to read. The oldest ones I could find date to the early 1800s but I suspect some are much older. I names and dates and now lost forever. A beautiful place to take a walk, the graveyard has lots of rolling hills and although you can't see the harbor from the cemetery when the wind is right you can get a sniff of it. A scenic if morose cemetery that will one day become part of the earth again.

The oldest readable gravestone goes back to 1683 but there are undoubtable unmarked graves that are much older. The ancient graveyard is lovely with rolling hills and some great old and creepy trees scattered around. None of the memorials are especially large but there are some really weird looking crypts and several very cool memorials that are just natural boulders. The graveyard is well maintained but many of the old gravestones are impossible to read. But others have intricate and morose death heads carved into them that are both incredibly cool and spooky as all hell. This is a amazing and fascinating graveyard that is a cool place for a nice walk while in Barnstable. A wonderful slice of the town's history that is well worth visiting.

Not a big cemetery but one that seems more spacious that the average 19th century graveyard because the graves aren't crushed together. Many of the older stones are getting difficult to read but I did see a couple from the 1820s. Most of the memorials are simple with only a couple of larger and more elaborate ones. The Falmouth Poorhouse was located near the old graveyard and most of the unfortunate people that lived and died there were buried with only a number on their grave. However some volunteers recently searched the old records and found names for many of the poorhouse deceased and placed a small memorial in their honor. Just a little graveyard that has a whole lot of history and memories. A simple cemetery that reflects the simple lives of the people of this area.

It was started back in 1832 and is sometimes referred to as the Waquoit Cemetery. The cemetery is located very close to a salt marsh and has a number of endangered plant species growing in it and there are signs warning people not to mess with them. All the trees and plants growing in and around the cemetery gives it a very rustic and casual appearance that blends in well with the environment. It's quite easy to go right up to it before you realize it's a graveyard. Most of the memorials and stones are very simple and plain but some do have interesting designs and carvings. A very interesting graveyard that has become part of the natural habitat.

That's unfortunate because the area has some fascinating and interesting things about it. The old graveyard is pretty modest and most of the memorials are plain and simple. A few large gravestones but most are old and well worn. The ubiquitous yellow lichen that is so common on Cape Cod covers most of them and the whole cemetery is surrounded by ancient and impressive stone walls. One of the very cool things about this cemetery is that the rare Cape Cod prickly pear cactus can be found here in fairly large numbers. Many people are surprised to learn that an indigenous cacti can be found in parts of New England and although the cactus is uncommon, certain areas around Wellfleet and Provincetown still has fairly large colonies. One of those colonies of cacti happens to be in this cemetery. A small and inconspicuous old graveyard that offers a historic perspective of humans as well as an unique natural environment.
