But, as cemeteries go: this one is…read morejust off of Cooke Road on Edgartown, and his resting place for the past 9 years is on a tranquil grassy hill. Its the "newer" of the two cemeteries with same name: only dates back to the 1700's Both are historic and many notable people have been lain to rest there. The "original" is at capacity, and this was close to it at time of plot purchase. It is also close to the Volunteer Fire Department, so his best friend can visit when he chooses. It was the best choice during a difficult time. The water where we spent so many blissful times is a short walk away; when the trees shed their leaves in fall/winter you can see it. The Island carries so many beautiful memories for us, this "last" one is difficult to this day; and imagine it will be until I take my last breath. If there was a place my beloved would have chosen to rest, I'm sure it would be here. Just like on Pesach, I often leave a place or a drink for him during special occasions. My heart's greatest wish is that we will be reunited, somehow at another time and place beyond my comprehension. Until then, know that you are remembered, loved and missed: not just on 26 April, but daily. Peacefully tucked within an oak…read moregrove, it dates back to 1849 (making it surprisingly recent for New England, the same year John Marshall found gold in the American River) There's an array of statuary- embodiments of grief, angels of all kinds (from cherubic children to stunning beauties) There are obelisks, mausoleums, family plots in neat rows. Graves of those who served in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, both World Wars, the Civil War, all have a peaceful resting place. It's a beautiful, reverent place. It's the final resting place of Falmouth-born poet Katherine Lee Bates who penned "America the Beautiful." A beautiful cemetery indeed. Fitting.

Songs and angels…read more The Oak Grove Cemetery was founded in 1849 but has graves that have been relocated from other, smaller graveyards that are much older. Lots of Revolutionary and War of 1812 veterans are buried here as well as many affluent Falmouth residents. In total there are probably over 3,000 residents including Katharine Lee Bates who wrote the famous America the Beautiful. The cemetery was enlarged many times through the years and is now over 22 acres. Most of the memorials are simple with few obelisks or huge and massive gravestones. Some are old and worn while others are fresh and new. Some unique and creative memorials including lighthouses, little fairies and probably the sexy angel I have ever seen. A very cool old graveyard that offers a variety of different memorials and gravestones in a very bucolic and peaceful setting.

It's on a main thoroughfare in Hyannis, among businesses, restaurants, apartments. Many of the gravestones are from the early 18th century, some have worn away to ancient rocks. Even in the sunlight, it gives off an eerie aura. Many of the graves are now anonymous due to the ravages of time and weather. It's been restored somewhat, it has a new sign. It could use some more upkeep. It looks forgotten, tho Hyannis' South Street is a main drag. It is a somber, sober place to remember those who have passed. A piece of history in busy downtown Hyannis.

Old and worn…read more The Ancient Hyannis Cemetery also goes by the names, South Street Cemetery, Paupers Cemetery or just The Old Cemetery. Makes it a bit confusing but whatever you call it the ancient graveyard is definitely old. Really, really old. The type of place that is spooky as hell, not because of ghosts or any phantasmagoric imagery, but because this place literally looks old, smells old and most of all feels old. It was wet and foggy when we went and I can't imagine the sun every shining here. The late Oct weather made things even more morose but I suspect it's not exactly a cheery place even in may. Many of gravestones are very worn, just down to just nubs or covered in various forms of lichen. I did manage to make out some from the mid 1700s but just barely. The stones are mostly very soft sandstone and didn't hold up well to the brutal weather. In fact most of the people buried here didn't have any headstones or memorials at all. Simply buried in the cold dirt. A very cool and very old and simple graveyard that is a vivid reminder of how things use to be.

An endangered…read moregraveyard The Bay Side Historic Cemetery is a small and very modest old graveyard that has most of it's memorials dating from the 19th century. It was started back in 1832 and is sometimes referred to as the Waquoit Cemetery. The cemetery is located very close to a salt marsh and has a number of endangered plant species growing in it and there are signs warning people not to mess with them. All the trees and plants growing in and around the cemetery gives it a very rustic and casual appearance that blends in well with the environment. It's quite easy to go right up to it before you realize it's a graveyard. Most of the memorials and stones are very simple and plain but some do have interesting designs and carvings. A very interesting graveyard that has become part of the natural habitat.

Old and peaceful…read more The North Falmouth Burying Ground was established in 1804 and hasn't accepted new customers in a long, long time. Most of the gravestones and memorials are simple and look like they were all carved from the same quarry. Not a lot of variety here, no obelisks or huge crypts, just a whole lot of plain and simple stones with a few larger and more elaborate gravestones scattered around. Many of the stones are well worn and difficult to read, no surprising considering the soft stones and harsh Cape Cod weather. The old graveyard is quiet and peaceful and a nice reflective place to walk around. Lots of plants and trees growing between the gravestones and the entire area is well maintained and quite attractive. A nice cemetery that gives a glimpse of a simpler and less complicated time.

The home is beautiful, bright, and comfortable and did not feel like a stuffy funeral home. Members of the family and visitors commented on the calming atmosphere of the home. One unique offering is their comfort dog Rosie who visited when we were making arrangements and responded with affection to those of us overwhelmed by emotion. I cannot say enough nice things about Jay Rojas who handled our arrangements and John and Jodi Blute who also helped us along the way. Rolling hills and…read moreDeath heads The Lothrop Hill Cemetery is one of the very oldest graveyards on Cape Cod. The oldest readable gravestone goes back to 1683 but there are undoubtable unmarked graves that are much older. The ancient graveyard is lovely with rolling hills and some great old and creepy trees scattered around. None of the memorials are especially large but there are some really weird looking crypts and several very cool memorials that are just natural boulders. The graveyard is well maintained but many of the old gravestones are impossible to read. But others have intricate and morose death heads carved into them that are both incredibly cool and spooky as all hell. This is a amazing and fascinating graveyard that is a cool place for a nice walk while in Barnstable. A wonderful slice of the town's history that is well worth visiting.
