    Wonderful owner of Groceria Italiana
    Elizabeth B.

Thanks to Richard, Sylvia, Jake, and (as always) Rachel for making this my favorite Yelp event so far! I had been to Bloomfield several times previously for dinner and for Little Italy Days, but this Yelp Event really helped me to learn a lot more about this borough! Our 'Burgh Bits and Bites owner and tour guide Sylvia took us to four different stops - Groceria Italiana, Maria Merante's, Donatelli's, and Angelo's Pizzeria - with a couple brief architectural stops along the way. The tour was a nice length of time, and I was definitely full by the end! I really enjoyed our Italian food -- pasta and meatballs, pizza, espresso, pizzelle, and biscotti. I also really enjoyed our second portion of the event with PA Brew Tours. Church Brew Works served up a large amount of beer for our tasting. Though Jake (the owner of PA Brew Tours) was a victim of some unfortunate events, he made the best of the situations, and I learned a lot from him about not only Church Brew Works but also about the history of breweries in the Pittsburgh area. I had a great time! After the event was over, my husband and I picked up ravioli, sauce, and biscotti from Donatelli's and fresh bread from Groceria Italiana. I loved all of the local businesses that I was introduced to today and definitely plan on shopping with them again in the near future! I also plan on looking into both tours in the future when friends are in town!

This event was broken into two parts. The first was a walking tour of Bloomfield courtesy of Burgh Bits & Bites and the second was a beer tasting at Church Brew Works courtesy of Jake of PA Brew Tours. Richard and Sylvia from Burgh, Bits and Bites Tours were absolutely great! I never knew Bloomfield was so interesting and had so much history and I've lived in the Pittsburgh area my whole life. LOL! The walking tour consisted of the following stops, Angelo's Pizzeria, Groceria Italia, Merante's Gifts and Donateli's. While on the tour we learned about the different architecture of the area including dental crown molding and the beautiful St. Joseph's Church. The first stop, Angelo's Pizzeria served us some delicious cheese pizza. (I will be back soon!) The second stop, Groceria Italia a cute little Italian grocery store that has been in the neighborhood for decades was my favorite stop. The fact that they make all of their pasta, sausages and meats by hand is a plus during a time when most things are made by machines. While there we got to meet "Momma" and sample some homemade meatballs and pasta, outstanding! The third stop, Merante's Gifts is a cozy little store that sells Italian among other home decor items. It's the perfect store to find trinkets for your Nana. Maria, the owner who also does cooking classes in the apartment upstairs served us some tasty iced coffee in the kitchen where she does her classes. We also each got a amazing dessert while back in the gift shop. The fourth and final stop of the walking tour was Donateli's, a Italian grocery store similar to Groceria Italia. The main difference between the two is that Donateli's pasta is not homemade and is supplied from another company. While there we got to try a orange and chocolate biscotti and see the "back of house" machines. The Brewery portion was nice also. We got to sample three different beers. I don't drink beer so I can't really say they were all that good. Jake really knows the history of beer in Pittsburgh. The only bad thing that happened was the shuttle bus that dropped us off at Church Brew Works left us stranded and we had to wait for him to come back. Not Jake's fault. Thanks Rachel for another great event.

I went on 2 trips with this group , years ago.... Malory and Bill were very nice, but…read more... My first trip was a cruise. I didn't have a roommate, and I asked to be matched with a roommate. I paid extra to make sure I have a balcony room as I really wanted to enjoy looking at the ocean every day from my bed and getting the breeze off the ocean. I asked to room with someone, something they do if you want to share the cost. I got to my room before my roommate did as both beds are exactly the same both have a night table. Everything is exactly the same in the room. I just picked one bed because I wanted to lay down, so I chose a bed and was resting when my roommate came in and threw a big fit as to why I got to have that bed closer to the window and she proceeded to put all of her things across the common coffee table area and then took her bed spread and pillow and put it on the couch, leaving me with only my bed to sit on because she was now hogging the whole couch when I left the room for activities and came back. She had moved things that were on my night table, lit candles in the room and moved other things of mine as well. At the dinner table., People were approaching me with "is that your roommate?" And "I'm so sorry for you" as my roommate was going from person to person insulting each of them... And I approached Mallory and Bill about her behavior as well as her touching my stuff in the room, lighting candles and not leaving me alone. I had no peace in the room at all. My choices were to stay with her or to move to an inside room which does not even have a window to see the ocean from my room it's just an enclosed box. So, She was REWARDED with the entire room with a balcony TO HERSELF for her bad behavior. Meanwhile, the rest of my trip was in a tiny room with no window, and I was not compensated at all in anyway, and did not get the enjoyment or relaxation which I had OAID FOR and looked forward to (for months). Amazing journeys had let me down. I thought, however I would give it another chance after all what were the chances of being roomed with two horrible people??? So I decided to go to Israel and booked a roommate. This roommate also was a space hog, but not as bad as the first one, she ran ahead of me into the room and tossed her stuff across the entire common area not leaving me 1 inch to even put a hairbrush down. Then when we went out as a group one night, we were all walking, and apparently they had ordered transportation for us which consisted of one large, beautiful stretch limousine, and two small cars without air-conditioning. So the pretty people ran ahead into the limousine and myself and a handful of others were stuck in two cars, following two small smelly cars with no air-conditioning... This was disappointing to say the least you don't expect to be treated this poorly when you're on your vacation. For these reasons I will never book with amazing journeys again it shouldn't be a matter of if you're popular or you can run and elbow your way in front of other people to get the best... Very disappointing. The idea of it is great.... but personally, I would never go with them again unless they compensated me in a meaningful way for all that I've been through on those two trips.

Overall, my trip was truly fantastic, but there were two things that weren't…read more.. First of all, for a singles trip, I expected roughly half & half, but there were only 5 men on my trip. We had 32 people total. Also, I took the trip when I was 53, and I was told that the age range was 50 and up. It turned out that I was the youngest by about 10-15 years. Most of the people were in their 60s & 70s. They were all wonderful people, but I would have liked to know both things before I signed up. Next time I'll know the right questions to ask.

The place was bustling in the middle of the afternoon, and I was lucky to secure the last stool at the bar. The espresso martini drew my eye, and I thought I should have a snack to go with it. I ordered the $12 Devil's Eggvocate. Four deviled egg halves were topped with smoked paprika, pickled jalapeño slices, and bacon jam made with their own coffee liqueur (Photo 9). It was a bit top heavy for me, but then I never reject a deviled egg. If I wasn't driving, I might've considered trying a whiskey tasting, but it just wasn't in the cards. I was immediately blown away with the foyer! At check in, there is fruit infused water to quench your thirst. Make sure you keep your room key in hand because you will need it to operate the elevator (once in, hold it against the black box until light turns green and quickly select your floor). The hallways were incredible! And still had their old charm! I even picked up the old fashioned telephone and it rings the front desk! You can use it shall you need something ... if for some reason you cannot enter your room, just pick up the black phone in the hallway and they will come to you (this didn't happen to me, but just a tip if it does). I stayed in room 1470 and absolutely love my view of the gothic architecture of the Union Trust. I looked out my window a million times! The size of my room was huge! I could have done cartwheels all over the place! The WiFi is complimentary for guests. There's cable TV. Maybe other options too but I didn't have my tv on much to know. The water pressure deserves its own special shout out! Holy moly it was heaven! And the brand of washes they had was nice! Usually the conditioner isn't good enough in hotels for my hair but this was just fine! And there's a good blow dryer on the back of the door (I still used my own because I have a lot of hair and it's long BUT had I forgotten it, their hair dryer would have been just fine at 1875 watts. There's a tag on your door that you can hang if you'd like to skip housekeeping for a day and the hotel will donate a meal for doing so .. check out the tag for more info! There's also cards you can put on your bed if you want your bedding changed. I was never bothered in my room by housekeeping. I was never bothered by noise. I never experienced a phony phantom call to my room. (All things I've experienced at other places). You will get a free drink at checkout you can get a beer at the tap room or a coffee at Mellon Square (on site). It is not good for the speakeasy ... and yes, it's a real speakeasy that existed in the 1920s you could access thru tunnels under the city! So cool! On checkout day, the event I attended was going to start early and finish after checkout time. Since I was up late the night before, the front desk said I was welcome to bring my bags down now for bellhop to hold, but they also put me for a late checkout at 1pm so I could come down late the next day too. So partway thru the event just before 1pm I brought down my bags and they held them for the next 90 mins I was there. I parked across the street at the Mellon square parking garage ... Apple GPS marks the garage in the wrong place FYI ... it marks it about a block away but it is directly across the street from the hotel, with the entrance to it being on the cross street. I paid $44 to park there from Thursday around 5pm to Sunday around 3pm. Not bad. They do have valet parking at the hotel too but that is $55 per day I believe. Leaving was sad. I would have liked more time to enjoy this place. I would love to come back sometime! I have nothing bad to say about this place. Wonderful staff and incredible hotel! Thank you for this amazing stay!
