The weather was beautiful for sitting outside. I wish I had gotten our server's name because he was outstanding. Friendly, witty, and willing to help navigate the menu - he made our dining experience even better. We started with a couple of local wines that were amazing - a red and a rosé. Some bread and butter came to our table with our escargot starter and side salad. The bread and starter were delicious. Our snails were hot and garlicky with plenty of juice to sop up. The side salad was also very tasty and fresh. For our mains I went with the Schnitzelbank Platter and my lady went with the Pepper Schnitzel. My platter came with a local delicacy called saumagen, as well as roasted pork, sausage, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut. The saumagen was the highlight for me. Our server was also excited we got it. It is a local offering consisting of various meats and other items wrapped up in a stomach and served as a loaf-style meat. The pepper schnitzel was also outstanding - the sauce was indeed peppery, but it didn't smother the schnitzel, which was breaded nicely and not dry, as some schnitzels can be. And after all that food, still, an apple strudel. This was so worth it. I don't even like sweets in the USA, but in Europe, they are something else. This was something else. We had a lot of great meals on our trip, but this was probably the best. Not just for the food, but for the overall experience, it's easy to see why this is the shining star in Heidelberg.

I came across this hidden gem through reddit. This restaurant is nestled up on one of the side streets more in an alleyway. I ordered an aperol spritz as well as a full order of the Braised onion soup which had franconia onion sauce and delicious homemade potato balls *chefs kiss* my mother had the same but half the portion including the wine soup which she loved! Definitely wish I could've ordered more off the menu! The portions are very generous, loved the cozy ambiance and the unique charm this place had! In Germany, particularly in Bavaria, stricter COVID-19 Prevention Health Measures Ordinance went in effect in early November 2020. The immediate affect was the closing down of all non-essential businesses including restaurants, retail stores, etc. I still remember how disappointed I was by this since it happened just as I arrived in Germany. Today we actually had a sit-down meal for the first time! Yay, things are finally getting closer to the new normal in Bavaria! There were several restaurants and cafés set up with outdoor seating on this visit. It wasn't a particularly warm day, and there was a little breeze to make it feel chilly. We chose Gasthaus zur Sonne because it was a little set back from the busy street. Just as our drink order was served, they turned overhead heaters and made it more comfortable for us. Service was very pleasant...maître de/cashier lady was very cheerful (perhaps almost over the top), and took our food and drink order right away as we were seated. Young female server was somewhat quiet perhaps keeping balance with gregarious older lady, yet very pleasant and courteous. Our food was very good. It wasn't anything fancy...just bratwurst and salads (beneath the pile of lettuce, there were assortment of typical Franconian pickled vegetables which we really like). Sauerkraut was very good, too. It was altogether a very enjoyable meal. They have both German and English menus.

The outdoor dining area looked like one of the best in town with great lighting, flowers, and lots of tables - would have been a prime spot for people watching and enjoying the nice weather. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, especially since there seemed to be a small discrepancy between the English and German menus provided. I ordered a seasonal special with chanterelle mushrooms, a cream sauce, and bread dumpling. It was very rich without being overly filling. Portions were fairly large and typical compared to most places in Germany. The rest of my family enjoyed their meals, wine and beer, although I can't recall what anyone else ordered - I was too focused on my own dish! I'd definitely eat here again if I make it back to Dinkelsbühl.
