I prefer an exercise routine at a gym that I can count on for consistency and positive environment (clean facilities, working equipment and good staff). I've found that at BAC. I have been a member of BAC for 11 years. Joined initially to play tennis, and played both drop-in and on the Central Valley Tennis League team. Been taking Pilates onsite for 5+ years to help strengthen after a foot injury (addition fee for Pilates reformer classes that's well worth it) only 5 reformers in the room, so more individual attention (I take from instructor Brenda). Also, started doing 1/2 hour/week private training sessions with trainer Denise several years ago to target my workouts, which has definitely strengthened my body. I also use various exercise equipment for warm-ups or targeted exercise. Highly recommend Brenda for Pilates (she also has a great mat Pilates class in larger room) and Denise for private training. BAC staff is great (always helpful, friendly and keeping the gym clean and in working order). Highly recommend BAC. read more

I have been a member here for many years. The personnel at the front desk are so friendly and always greet everyone as they come and go. There are many classes to choose from with really great instructors! Gabby is an amazing trainer and runs a challenging class with multiple times available. She plays great music and her workouts are challenging and always different. The facility is well kept. The workers are always cleaning floors or wiping equipment. The only thing that is hard is they stopped providing day are for kids after the pandemic. My kids grew up at this gym. The employees all were so wonderful and many have had the chance to see my children grow over the past 9 years. This gym feels like home. read more

This is a beautiful facility, more like a private club than a gym in its appearance, yet has all the offerings of any full-on gym.

i cancelled my membership and nobody ever responded. When I called to follow up I found out they charged me for continued membership and they refused to refund me. They had no explanation as to why it was not handled timel. I also asked to speak with a manager, her name is Yesenia. She never called me back and basically avoided any accountability. When I finally spoke with her and asked to speak to her manager, she told me there isn't one. Only the owners and they do not deal with customers. I was never treated like a customer, only a number, and money that they took and shouldn't have. Never again will I deal with Brenda or recommend this unprofessional gym to anyone. read more

Because we had the day off and most businesses are closed in observance of Memorial Day, we were blessed to have Brenda Athletics open and Gabby offer a class. I think this was the only class on Memorial Day and everyone was grateful. There were around 32 in the class! This shows how good Gabby is. She was able to give us the full body workout we needed to kick off our day and it was fun to see others from the various classes. Great atmosphere, weather, and equipment. This is the worst gym I've ever been a member of. Machines are constantly broken. Sauna is constantly out of order. There are employees mopping and cleaning windows, but that is the extent of their cleaning process. The machines, windows sills, and corners of the rooms are dusty, covered in debris or show what I assume are dried sweat stains. Water bottles left scattered everywhere, as well as paper towels. Even the vending machines don't work. They will have you sign a contract but they will still raise your membership fees despite that contract (most recently May 2022). Forget trying to contact a manager. I've asked to speak to this manager, I get told they aren't there. I email the manager, no response. Which is why I'm here now. Lastly, the crowd here is has no gym etiquette. There will be girls chatting, sitting on the machines, not using them. People will use machines, like the squat rack, and will not rerack the plates. Dumbbells are often out of place or not reracked at all. Step benches are left out. I spend my valuable workout time reracking other people's weights. You would think the 5 employees they have at any given time would encourage members to follow the gym etiquette procedures they have posted by the front desk, but they are so enthralled in their conversation, I rarely see them leave the front desk area to check machines, deep clean machines or even help pick up gym equipment. This gym is consistently welcoming and always helps me out when need be. Ever since I started the gym they've only seemed to improve.

The main reason I wanted to get into this gym, was they had offered personal trainers. At the time it took over a month for a trainer to finally get back to me, which really put me in a bad mood about whether I should write this review or not. I decided to stick with them and see if they would change the way they handled everything. Over few months it got much better, I started trying out the classes. Each trainer is different and has a different style of what they do with the members. I began loving going here. For my schedule, I do love that they offer classes early morning but also some later in afternoon, its not all stuck around same time like most gyms I was signed up with. I do notice a lot of members are pretty cool, so they usually clean up after them selves and that's kind of nice that's its not a super fancy gym but its a respectable one at the least. If I could say something they could improve on, Possibly just the enthusiasm they show towards members and communication between the employees. Staff: Welcoming, informative, attentive, friendly. Personal Trainer: Adrian is awesome. Helpful, detailed, informative, flexible with work out schedule. He knows his work outs and plans. He teaches how to do each work correctly so that you're getting the right exercise. Cardio Room: well maintained, clean, spacious. Treadmills, bikes, elliptical trainers, stair climbers. Weight Room: clients could do better at putting the weights back on the rack and in order, but the overall areas are clean and maintained. Different weight machines and dumbbells available. Would not recommend a long term commitment to the Turlock gym. The men's sauna is broken every other week and they take forever to fix it. It gets broken one day and then the next day it will work and the day after, it will be broken again. The staff do nothing to fix it. They have taken longer than 2 weeks to fix it in the past. How hard is it to get someone to take a look at it and diagnose the problem that keeps happening for the sauna to break. They sometimes blame it on the wait time to get a certain part to get delivered. Well why not order multiple parts that they might need to have in stock when it breaks in the future. Or just get a whole new sauna unit itself. With the amount that people pay for rates (which keep going up), I know they can afford it. The sauna has been broken for a week now again and they still haven't fixed it. Some primarily choose this gym because of the sauna but if it is never working then what is the point. Also, the staff here are very rude. A friend of mine was once told by one of the male staff wearing a hat "I'm going to have to kick you out" while he was in the sauna. It was about 4 minutes from closing time and he had every intention of getting out before closing time came. They don't have any rules which state you have to get out of the sauna a certain amount of time before the gym closes. When he was out of the sauna and changing in the bathroom, the worker kept standing there staring and waiting for him and asked if he was ready yet, when it was about 2 minutes to closing time. The worker should not be pressuring when it was not even closing time. Theres not rule that says you have to be out of the bathroom a certain time before closing. Rather try out InShape in ceres since it is the closest other gym that has a sauna and was also recently revamped. read more

I would see why it's easy to turn down this fitness club. It's old and shabby and is in serious need of repairs and updates. When we were first shown around, an area of their carpet was soaked from leaks brought about by the rains. I could tell how embarrassed the representative was. Their aerobic room has squeaky floors and needs better lighting, in my opinion. Their jacuzzi is out of order often and their pool still has the old style concrete floors. But we signed up anyhow because we liked the fact that they provide daycare on site, they have tennis courts and racquet ball rooms to use, their pool is heated and all in all, the club is generally family-friendly. I've had no problems with any of the staff. The daycare attendants are very friendly. And the trainers are really nice and non-intimidating. Unlike many of the gyms and clubs I've been to, this is a place where there is true diversity-- young and old, beginners and pros, simple and flashy. You can see that people come just to be fit and healthy. They have another branch in Modesto which is newer and has more classes, even for the kids. I just hope that the BAC is working on any renovation plans. They do have a new building across the main, but it's meant for Pilates and other more advanced training. read more

First thing I remember about the Brenda athletic clubs was sitting in the back of a Jazzercise class as a little kid while my mom exercised. This was 34 years ago. I put on a lot of weight during my late elementary and junior high years, thanks to video games, and knew very little about healthy eating or working out in my early youth. It wasn't until I was so frustrated with myself that I decided to start working out at 14. My parents were members of the gym, so they added me to their family pass -- which was a good deal. I started to learn how to eat right, and started working out whenever I had time. With a lot of hard work, I saw results in time; which motivated me to work out harder. After a year of hard work and good eating, I had lost 50 pounds. I was lean, and had some muscle. People at the Modesto club were awesome. It was such a family oriented gym in my youth. By working out regularly, and being friendly and respectful to others in the gym, I met tons of great people! After graduating from high school; I had more free time around my early college schedule, so I started learning about body building, taking training and nutrition classes, and reading books. I put on a lot of muscle, and did some training for friends and people at the gym. The regulars that worked out there made it that much more fun; since I had been there for a while, I got to know a lot of people, and we knew each other well enough to joke around while working out and have a good time. I moved to Turlock in 2000 after graduating from MJC, and started working out at the Turlock gym. I didn't know anyone there, which was a huge difference from where I left. Turlock's facility was more a combination of college students and older people. However, I loved working out, so I got in there and started a consistent schedule. I smiled a lot, was respectful to others, shared equipment, and communicated politely. The funny thing about being a regular someplace, and making an effort to care about those around you is that it doesn't take long before others ask your name, and you become surrounded by people that enjoy being around you as much as you enjoy being around them. As I finished my bachelors, masters, and teaching credential, and stayed consistent with my workouts at the Turlock Brenda's, I knew most of the regulars at the gym. I loved the people that worked at the Turlock club -- they were just as awesome as the Modesto club was. As I got my first teaching job, I started working out with a teacher buddy of mine. We worked out together at the Turlock club throughout our 20s and early 30s. And while many of the faces changed both at the front desk and of the members over this span of time, there were still a lot of amazing people there. While the gym wasn't cheap once I was off the family plan of my teens; the people that worked out there could all afford to work out there. In my 26 years at the Brenda clubs, I never got my car broken into, never got anything stolen from me, and never felt unsafe; even with leaving the gym at early or late hours. There were a few times in my 30s that the gym made a few decisions that were more about making a profit than it's current members; such as when CSUS was having their gym worked on; or when Turlock Fitness Club shut down; or when Fitness Choice also closed; and overcrowding took place on these occasions. But no gym is perfect. Throughout most of my 30s, the Turlock gym was still great; with great members, and great staff. I've always been very impressed with the Turlock club's hiring of staff. Aubrey Brenda, who managed the Turlock club for a long time was an absolute sweatheart. One of the most laid-back and friendly people I've ever met. And Esme is just as cool. In my mid-thirties, I had my son. He's done swimming lessons at the Turlock club from 2 onward. Trusting your child to strangers is never easy, but all of his instructors were wonderful. He had Taylor first (for multiple years), Sara, then Nolan. All were former Turlock/Pitman high swimming/water polo team members. And all were extremely patient, and did an awesome job with him. He's an excellent swimmer now, and we swim together at the club during the warmer months regularly. My little guy has also played in child care at the club, and all the girls that work there have been awesome. They play with the kids the whole time they are there. My son has never complained about playing in there; and also really enjoys playing with some of the other member's kids. I seem to have reached my character limit before finishing my full story. But to sum it up, while the gym isn't perfect, it has some great people that work out there, and that work there. If you decide to become a member, please smile, be polite and respectful to others, and share the gym. Get to know people, and you'll soon realize that it's the best gym in town -- not because of the facilities, but because of the people. read more

BRENDA'S swimming pool is the only option for an outdoor club pool in town. The jr college not open nor highschool pools available. So with sadness, I write this review because my life right now interrupted. After all, the pool is unfit for habitation! FOR ANY PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS... BUYER BEWARE---- especially swimmers who might instead join elsewhere during this period of time to be safer than sorry....... THIS IS WHAT HAS HAPPENED... For a few weeks, the pool pump and filter were not working. MANAGEMENT did not put up any signage and alert swimmers that the filter system was out. The pool got muckier with each day. And put swimmers at risk for disease. Public health and the police were alerted by a few swimmers. Then it got fixed. One problem was solved. So we thought. Then as the weather started to change the pool got colder and colder. Apparently what seems to be the issue of the pump and filter, also involves the heating system. Outcome. THEY-- THE MANAGEMENT AGAIN DID NOT PUT SIGNAGE UP AND SWIMMERS STARTED TO COMPLAIN...... We found out the heating system is now an issue and THEY WERE WORKING ON IT!!!!! For two weeks in early October, many of us asked what was happening. We were told by their young inexperienced frontline work staff that someone had checked the pool and they were waiting for parts. ....Then the last week of OCTOBER ( after most of us continue to pay our monthly fees) a young woman stated that another company was coming out the next week to check the pool again ( A DIFFERENT COMPANY) and that she did NOT have any idea when the pool would open. TODAY we were told that it would NOT BE UNTIL NEXT YEAR THAT THE POOOOOOOL will be ready for swimmers and heated. I don't think the management is responsible, nor is the owner. FIRST AND FOREMOST the public health issue that they took the risk by not alerting and advising their customers put us at risk for more disease. THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE SIGNAGE STATING HEALTH RISK --- cleaning the pool properly is necessary for PUBLIC HEALTH. SECOND, the management leaves the MESSAGING TO its YOUNG INEXPERIENCED FRONT STAFF "KIDS" doing their first jobs in life... SHOULD THEY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MESSAGING AND TAKING THE HEAT FROM UPSET CUSTOMERS. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!! Management should 1) decide on the bottom line and make some arrangement of discounting for those who SWIM--- why should we pay our fees when there are NO SERVICES PROVIDED. 2) a letter explaining and offering an apology should be sent to our emails and snail mail telling us honestly about the issues being faced by the organization. 3) I believe the owner is taking his 'fricken time' to say it nicely trying not to spend money. In other words, he is being cheap and doesn't care that his customers are at risk.. he cares ONLY ABOUT HIS BOTTOM LINE... I KNOW THIS IS A TIME OF COVID. BUT--------MY GOSH MANAGEMENT..... might you be more honest in your business dealings and act responsibly. As far as I am concerned you are lucky no child who has swum in the pool with their grandparents has gotten an AMOEBA....... (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amoeba) and died. This is can be one serious consequence of a pool not filtered and cleaned properly. LET alone if an elder caught Pneumonia because they got in and found out the pool was only 68 degrees ( as it has been ) and because of signage were unaware. By the time a senior gets in and out slowly, the damage is done. A possibility is a long awful illness or heaven forbid death. I am NOT a drama queen but a medical professional who has swum in this pool for many years and seen management not acting properly. I am tired of their lack of interest in keeping the community safe. Brenda Athletics of Turlock is in a very convenient location for me, some of the trainers are very nice and welcoming, unfortunately the upper management and some trainers are extremely rude and unwelcoming. I work out with my sisters and cousins, we print workouts from Pinterest... we were push out of the club because of this. We were told by upper management that us working out together jeopardizes the livelihood of their trainer and were no longer allowed to workout in a group at their facility. We are very supportive of local business however when the business treats people so poorly we can no longer support! Brenda's is a relic of gyms of old. The days when people spent 3 hours at the gym, playing racquetball or tennis, going for a swim, joking with the guys. Those days are over. I used to spend a lot of time at Brenda's and it amazes me that they stay open in today's market. The parking is cramped, the equipment mediocre, the customer service average, equipment just ok. I'm running out of different ways of saying average, but you get the point. My favorite thing about this place was racquetball, which last time I checked was reduced to one court while the others were converted to some personal training bs. The days of a club med type spot is dying I think. People want to stay in shape but are short on time and short on cash. With planet fitness and fit republic in town Brenda's is on notice. read more

This is a long overdue post. I use to be a member of this club so I have first hand knowledge of what I am about to talk about. I am no longer a member for he reasons listed below. I will be quick and short. First of all this club lies to their customers. They opened the new gym on Monte Vista with all new equipment but then close it due to lack of customers. Basically they said they were losing $ and closed it. So they close this club just to open up a personal training type facility in the same spot? I thought BAC was losing $? Can you see why I said lies? This Turlock facility is old and wormed down. A lot of the new equipment at the time was never moved from the new place to the old place. Pathetic! read more

The Brenda Athletic Club in Turlock is as solid an investment as one can make in his/her health. The facilities cater to a very wide range of activities, form aerobics to tennis to racquetball to swimming and much, much more. The facilities are clean and serviceable, and the post-workout options (a large whirlpool and spa, a TV lounge, a tennis center and more) are excellent. Most importantly, however, is the attitude and competence of the staff. They are singularly impressive, and always helpful. Their rates are also surprisingly reasonable. After 10 years we finally ended our family membership. We even supported them through the pandemic, but place is not great anymore. Initially we wanted the membership for the tennis courts. The courts are horrible. Most of them are cracked up and not taken care of. We reserved a court and were playing when a group of people came over and started playing basketball on our reserved court. We moved, but other courts have equipment on them and we picked that court because it had the least amount of cracks! The swimming pool in the summer consists of young families hanging out and treating it like a country club. If that is what you are looking for, then great. If you are looking to go in and swim laps you really have to go early or late in the summer and avoid the families. There is also no accountability for members. People use equipment and leave it wet with sweat. Just disgusting! We now play tennis at public courts that are superior and purchased work out equipment for us and our friends. Already almost breaking even on cost and we will wipe the sweat off of the equipment! read more

I joined this club for the outdoor pool, however the maintenance here sucks. The pool seemed to be closed every other week, ducks would crap in the pool, and the weeks that it was apparently open they would lease it out for parties. Furthermore, one of the members also told me that we are also not suppose to be using our membership for longer than two hours in a day, So I asked the front desk and they said it's true. There was also this old lady that would go around harassing people telling them her Keyes were stolen. Therefore, this gym doesn't value its members in any way. read more

Zero stars for customer service. They raised my monthly dues to $50 without my consent. When I went in and complained about it, they simply stated that in the fine print of my contract it says they can raise it at any time as the wish, without my consent. Also, to cancel you need to give them at least a 30 day notice. That means from the moment you cancel, you will still have to pay the current month and the next, even if your contract is up. Otherwise you will have to pay that, plus a buyout fee! No thanks. There are other gyms to choose from, don't go here. read more

I want to start off by saying this gym is disgusting. I was a member before and the gym needs to be remodeled. They have mold in certain places of the gym. Also don't get me started they have build up of dust everywhere. My cousin who goes to that gym just told me they are moving out doors. How desperate is this gym to stay open. Be careful everyone my cousin informed me that they already had Covid-19 cases but have kept silent. If I can give this gym a 0 I would. When being a member I encountered This lady with a hoodie and headband which was very weird and made me feel uncomfortable. As soon as I walked in I would try to by pass her quickly. While this gym does have a variety and equipment, the staff can be really unfriendly. Never knowing whether you are going to be greeted or just ignored on your way in or out makes the experience of going a bad one at times. I was a member here for about a year, I liked it because of the friends I made however half the staff are friendly and the other half aren't. Same with the members. I've gone to this gym a few times where I would put my things down on an equipment letting others know that I am going to use it and grab a weight. Then someone takes my spot as soon as I turn around and they look at me like I'm stupid. That's the environment here. At least "frat" boys respect other people lifting. Have been a member at the Modesto Club for several years. The place has never been clean. It's been cosmetically redone but the locker room has pink and black mold. Today I saw used toilet paper on the floor in the locker room. Taking a shower some nasty brown stuff dropped on me from the air vent. Keep hoping things will get better because I really like the water exercise class and instructors but we were informed today that water exercise will no longer be in the heated pool as of Sept 1st. read more

From the first time I started coming here I felt uncomfortable with a lady standing in the front I believe her name is Esme. She is always eyeing people and making them feel uncomfortable. I don't know if she is a manager or not but she definitely needs to be retrained. When you go to the gym you want to feel welcomed and not judged and judging someone and assuming is exactly what she does. She is definitely racist and likes to assume. I will definitely be speaking to someone above her because this was not okay. She has questioned me and my step mom multiple times which is not okay to assume someone's personal life at all especially if you are some sort of "manager". Extremely rude staff. I am not kidding when I state I was harassed by a Front Counter employee. I left and went to another gym it was so bad. On top of the that the facility is aging poorly and is not very clean. Several times I saw young children in the Jacuzzi with a regular diaper on. No one is enforcing the rules when it comes to that.
