It is the perfect balance of movement, breath, and presence. I always leave feeling stronger, clearer, and completely reset. I honestly wish they offered this class more than once a week because it is that good. I came for a drop in class from out of town. The studio is a beautiful space, however the teacher, who opened the studio, did not arrive until about 4 minutes before the class started. It is considerate, professional and standard operating procedure to have the studio and space open for 15 minutes before class. Students need time to use the bathroom, settle in, grab props, and take a few quiet minutes to themselves before beginning practice. Instead, [[HIGHLIGHT]]there were 7 of us standing outside by the door waiting in the sun and it was a very odd dynamic when the teacher parked and arrived to let us all in because the teacher should ALWAYS arrive before the students if there is no open door/front desk.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The teacher did not mention specifically which props to have for practice, so every time we did a movement with a new prop, about half of the students had to get up and grab them from the prop room which is very disruptive to practice. Lastly, the teacher guided students into trying Handstand without making space for alternatives like Dolphin or Headstand, and more importantly without any of the basic energetic cues for hands, elbows, and shoulders that are strictly necessary to provide students for this posture in order to protect your neck and shoulders. read more

Good little yoga spot on the island. The classes are $20 a piece if you drop in. From what I've seen they have 2-3 classes per day. For example, today they Vinyasa at 5pm and Katonah Yoga at 6:30pm. Each class is 75 minutes long, which is delightful. Sometimes a 60 minute class is just too short. The teachers here do a great job adjusting the difficulty for the different skill levels in the class. Breathing Room is a real oasis-- Aviva the owner and her collaborators have created a beautiful space, clean, filled with light, and beauty that provide a wonderful environment for unwinding, going inward, stretching oneself. And all classes I have gone to over the past couple of years have thoughtful, highly trained teachers, attuned to different techniques, and different people's abilities and needs. Many bring important spiritual perspective or introspection as well as work on the physical (as opposed to some studios that have turned yoga into an exercise or gym-type class). Aviva herself is a gifted teacher and her Vinyasa/flow classes have been a wonderful way to ease back into yoga after surgery. I've been coming to this studio for over 5 years, and it's truly become my home away from home. The studio has always been great, but it blossomed when Aviva and Liza took it over in 2020. The space is clean, bright, and filled with beautiful plants. There are lots of props available to modify your practice in whatever way you need (which is encouraged by all teachers). There are classes for everyone - from restorative to vinyasa flow. This is a great studio for beginners and experienced yogis alike. All those years ago, I took my very first yoga class here with no experience and no idea what to expect, and I never left! I've been practicing here at least 5 days per week since then. The instructors are all warm and welcoming, and so are the students - there's none of that clique-y competitive vibe that you sometimes come across at urban yoga studios. Most classes are also available both in-person and online which provides flexibility for students. Regarding the recent review criticizing the studio for stating that the prenatal class is for pregnant "people" rather than pregnant "women" - not everyone who can get pregnant identifies as a woman, and the studio doesn't limit its prenatal classes to those who do. It's pretty obvious that this woman-owned studio has the utmost respect for the bodies and experiences of not only women but ALL genders. The fact that their prenatal class is open to pregnant people of any gender just goes to show how inclusive Breathing Room is. I'm confused as to why this would be a downside for anyone! read more

I am so incredibly thankful that I found Leela Yoga and Beth! I started prenatal yoga while I was about 6 months pregnant and wished I would have started earlier as the community building was invaluable, and I'm confident that the classes helped set me up for a successful pregnancy and birth experience. They make it easy by providing mats and all of the props needed to be able to do the classes at a level suited to your ability. I always felt stretched out and relaxed after class and took home tips to help ensure I stayed that way throughout the rest of the week. I also gained so much knowledge along the way as Beth is a pelvic floor specialist and has "been there done that" with pregnancy and kiddos three times over. This was so helpful to me as I navigated through my first pregnancy with no clue what I was in for. The studios are clean and spacious and the teachers are all kind and capable and provide guidance so that everyone can get the most out of their class. There is also a good variety of class times. The birthing partners class that Beth puts on for moms-to-be and their partners was super helpful as well. My husband even enjoyed it and said he got a lot of useful information from it and felt more ready for the whole experience. After baby was born we switched to the "Mommy and Me" yoga class and it was such a sweet time for me and my baby. Beth is so good with the moms and the babes and even has a "baby wrangler" to help ensure that mama still gets a workout in if babies are fussy. We do some poses and stretching and then some fun interactive songs to get baby engaged. I will forever cherish that time at Leela, those classes, the incredible mamas I met along the way (who are now some of my closest friends and my "village" through motherhood), and Beth Zygielbaum, who is the Mastermind behind it all and just an all-around wonderful human being. I have been taking class at Breathing Room for the past several years. I find their prenatal classes especially lovely. It's so comforting to have my personhood honored when going to class. I am a person who identifies as a woman, but I know people who can get and are trying to get pregnant who do not identify as a woman. To be in a class where all of my uterus having friends can share in the healing experience of prenatal yoga, makes me feel more comfortable in that space. II am so grateful that Leela Yoga has been able to provide online Zoom classes during the Covid Pandemic. Being an at risk person, i need to stay sheltered but its classes like Cindy Berks "Early Like Sunday Morning" class that keeps me feeling relaxed and fit. Cindy provides excellent explanation, variation and themes for her classes. She takes the time to observe the students with video enabled and offers corrections, which i find very helpful. She teaches every Sunday at 8:45am. The class is taught at a level that is perfect for a Sunday morning. After class is finished you will feel refreshed and invigorated to start your stay I highly recommend this class for all. read more

I found a Groupon for this studio that allows me unlimited classes for a month for $61. Often enough, Groupon will have code that allows an additional 20% off, which comes out to be only $49! But this Groupon is for first timers (or customers who haven't been to the studio for 6 months) and must be redeemed within 180 days. I called the studio and was able to be in touch with Lisa who was able to set up my account with my Groupon, that way I can start signing up for classes online, which is quite convenient! I've attended 5 classes now and so far each class has around 5 students. Here are the pros about this studio so far PROS: + Free un-metered parking in front + Free supplies to borrow (mats, blocks, blankets, bands, sandbags, eye pillows, etc.) + They accept credit cards! + You can leave your mats there too if you like + Changing Room in the back + Water and Tea provided + Free cubbies to keep your belongings in + Clear info. on classes available online + Classes specific to pregnant and/or women with small children available + All levels available throughout the day + Open everyday and latest class ends at 9:45pm + Super friendly and welcoming staff/instructors + Classes run for 1 hour and 15 minutes! CONS: - Although there is a restroom, I find it difficult to use because you're not allowed to wear shoes throughout studio (which makes sense). So to me it feels icky walking into a semi-public restroom with my bare feet, heh. - So far it seems not even expired groupons are honored, but perhaps that depends on who you speak to. My aunt kept calling the studio and no one seemed to be able to help with her Groupon, yet I had zero trouble. :( I really hope more people attend this studio. It's a place I'd love to continue to support and see it thrive. Drop-in rate is $16 (or $25 for 3 classes) $10 is for students/military/seniors I really can't say much about the classes since everyone is different, but I will say there are lots of variety here and so far all the staff have been pretty good. :) read more

Recently decided to (re) check out breathing room. I had attended when it was Leela yoga ages ago. TBH haven't been really going to in person classes all that much since 2020 for multiple reasons. Happy to have given this studio a shot as the space is beautiful, with nice high ceilings and plenty of room to practice. I have been attending Ashlees classes on Thursday evenings and I love them. Ashlee is such a welcoming instructor, who provides good instruction, and well sequenced classes. While I feel encouraged, I never feel pushed in my practices. I feel welcomed wherever I am I at in my practice that day. In addition, I love how Ashlee asks for consent for adjustments in every class. One of my favorite things about Ashlee is that she is an astrologer and weaves in a bit of astro themes into class in a way that is appropriate and not over done. Will keep taking with Ashlee and try out some other instructors as well. read more

I came back not expecting to go to yoga, but my body felt really stiff...so, I started searching for some classes in the bay area and Leela's class list looked promising. I went to a Vinyasa flow class with Beth and my body is back on track to being yogi-limber. Beth was so attentive, it really threw me off (in a good way). My instructor back in Los Angeles would do gentle adjustments while he does verbal instructions, but Beth's verbal instructions were so detailed, i felt the immediate difference in my body for each move. Since I didn't bring my yoga mat back with me, I couldn't buy a new one in time for my first class with the studio. Glad that the studio provides free yoga mats, blocks, blankets, eye sandbags, straps and bolsters for students to use. While I was in LA, with a much crazier schedule, I treated yoga as a back of the mind method to stay toned and went through the motions, doing the poses and looking the part; but it wasn't until classes here that I finally feel the stretches I was meant to feel with every pose. I always walk out of every class feeling mind and body different. Aviva is patient, knowledgeable and will help you adjust your body to the appropriate moves during forrest yoga. Danielle Szuch's vinyasa flow class was my favorite; the positions all literally flow into one another effortlessly, my friend and I left feeling incredibly stretched out and serene. Craig is attentive and passionate about yoga; he has a lot of insight on the history and practice of yoga along with the intended therapeutic and physical effects of each pose. Sandy is patient, gentle and incredibly experienced. Jenae is strong, understanding and can get you to work up a crazy sweat for vinyasa flow. This place has definitely convinced me to take a deeper commitment to my practice of yoga, which I intend to continue when I'm back in LA. Having the privilege to finally feel the intended effects of practicing more accurately pushes me to make sure I make yoga a daily routine to balance out the tumultuous lifestyle that's developed since law school. read more

Taken classes here and there and I just don't feel any real training here. The poses and transitions seem out of sync and rushed or even the polar opposite sometimes and it makes no sense. There tends to be no mind, body and spirit connection and it makes for a listless and yearning for more class. A little yearning for the breath and peacefulness and journey that these "yogis" fail to bring one on. Not certain where they get their teachers, or training, from or if they even know what they are truly doing, but it's obvious that they're soulless and just want your money. I came here because of a Groupon, and after hemming and hawing over the expensive monthly membership, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and go. I like the abundance of classes I like at least 3 of the instructors here (Paola, Troy, and Liza). I like that I feel as though I'm getting stronger and improving. I like the abundance of supplies you can use. I'm not a fan of all the "omming" and "thanking your inner self / third eye" stuff and some of the instructors are a miss... but if this place makes me want to come more than 3x a week, it's worth more than a cheap gym membership... because I actually work out. read more

Leela in Sanskrit translates roughly to "God's play" and if you have some sort of stigma to the word "God", then consider it "the divine nature of the universe's play". That is precisely the vibe that I got while attending a yoga class here. The room feels like a big giant space to be playful and roll around the floor and walls doing yoga. When I walked in I noticed a little desk off to the far right in one huge room, along with changing rooms, a restroom towards the back. The room was very clean and somehow welcomng, although it seemed fairly plain. The floors were dark laminated wood, the walls pastel colored, and the windows had little shoe cubbies alongside the bottom half along with a ledge to sit as well as hold several flyers for upcoming events. As I was removing my California winter shoes (flipflops with legwarmers), I read a little sign that said "In an effort to keep the space in order and to find your belongings later, please keep your shoes in the purple cubbies along the floor and your other personal belongings in the baskets provided." Beside this sign were several very small baskets that were barely big enough to hold more than three tea light candles each. Ha! I thought this was a joke. I left my belongings on the ledge, against their request. During class, while in the middle of doing my Adho Mukha Svanasana (Down Dog), I catch a glimpse of the big wooden shelf in the back of the room, that have baskets in each cube. Ah ha! So for those of you whom are newcomers, the baskets to put your belongings in are in the back of the room to the left of the desk. The one teacher I have experienced thus far, seemed knowledgeable about the poses and form. She didn't do hands-on-adjustments, in which I'm not a big fan of anyway, but rather verbal cues (and corrections). There was a good blend of knowledge, mysticism (for the mystics), structure and fun ("Leela"). I felt like the 5:30pm Friday class was a nice easy series of movement and semi-basic poses with a couple options for intermediate to advanced towards the end. I was happy to have found a place, on the island, ready and available to teach near the event I attended after. I've got plenty of gratitude lingering from Thanksgiving for having yoga classes where ever I happen to find myself, no matter where that is!
