French Toast with candied bacon, brûlée bananas, lemon curd and cherry tomatoes
    Brooke R.

Definitely one of my favourite meals! Walked into Breakfast Thieves with no expectations, it was just close by, but I promise I'll be back again soon. What a lovely surprise. Pretty sophisticated menu, not at all what I had expected from the outside. I had French Toast with candied bacon, brûlée banana, lemon curd & cherry tomatoes. I thought the cherry tomatoes were a lil out of place, however cherry tomatoes with lemon curd & banana, WOW!!! The whole meal, WOW! I feel so happy just remembering this meal. The crispy bacon and fresh French toast... Breakfast Thieves do breakfast right!! But they also pull off a great burger, as full as I was I couldn't resist trying a little bit of my friends and it was equally impressive. Put this great food together with friendly service and a cosy little atmosphere, Breakfast Thieves deserves 5 stars.

The Breakfast Thieves is in this quaint little corner on Gore Street close to the Rose Street Artist Market in Collingwood. As you approach the cafe, it feels like you're transported to a quiet street lined with trees that doesn't feel like Melbourne at all. My friend and I came at about 10.30am on a Saturday and the wait was less than 5 minutes. She had a smoked salmon benedict, and I had corn fritters. They were both really well seasoned and tasty. Table service was really good too. All in all, I would recommend going to Breakfast Thieves for a brilliant brunch in a gorgeous location.

Queens birthday celebration began with breakfast thieves on a Monday morning around 11am. There was a 20 minutes wait to sit indoors and no way did we want to sit outside. Located off the main street, there is plenty of street parking for patrons at breakfast thieves. Their menu is extensive with options like the spicy baked eggs with chorizo, peas, mushrooms, feta and pumpkin and it comes with garlic bread, French toast, three kinds of eggs benedict (ms omega lol), and the usual breakfast bircher etc. Their hot chocolate is interesting as it uses strong cacao powder with coconut sugar. Definitely for those who are against refined sugar. Not for my friend who thought the hot chocolate was quite bitter and dark. I got the baked eggs and my oh my they were quite delicious and unique. Peas, pumpkin, chorizo and feta what a wonderful combo. And accompanied by garlic bread instead of plain old sourdough. Wowee. Definitely a "legend"ary dish. My friend got the ms omega with generous helpings of trout (so fresh, so deliciously red), poached egg, large thick slices of sourdough and broccolini. So spoilt. Service was great. They noticed my friend had trouble cutting up the toast so offered her another sharper knife. Seriously more cafes need to provide adequate cutting utensils for their artisan toast. Coffee was average. Quite robust. And slightly acidic. They don't split bill and you can't Take away leftovers. Hello shortage of food by 2050. Need to go back to try the gypsy king and the leprechaun.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how do you steal breakfast? It will come to me sooner of later, but at this time I am completely stumped. Anyway, this is another of those discoveries that I made while persuing the internet at work (yes, I know, I'm supposed to be working, but sometimes a little break can put your mind back in order). Anyway, I decided that any place that goes by the name 'Breakfast Thieves' is certainly some place that I had to check out. Anyway, it was pretty cool - one of those hip and trendy cafes hidden away in an old factory in Fiztroy. It certainly was popular and their bircher muesli was pretty cool. They also made my tea the way I like it. Oh, I should also mention that they do have a list of specialties, and while the standard fare is always available, why not try something new?

A near perfect breakfast experience on our first visit to this lovely gem. Perfect items: flatwhite coffee, Geisha and French Affair, scrambled eggs, sauteed mushrooms, beetroot/gin cured trout. Near Perfect: Croissant (it had the perfect flavour but the texture was slightly on the tough side). V happy with the service too! Plus v clean restroom and free wifi! #HighlyRecommended!

I loved this place. The service was great, the food was exceptional and the restaurant is adorable. I got the breakfast chain, which consisted of two soft boiled eggs, English cheddar soldiers, passion fruit & mango trifle with granola and Apple & blueberry almond crumble. So really you're getting everything you could ever want from a breakfast and all perfectly portioned. Highly recommend, if I was staying longer I'd want to try each item on the menu.

The French Toast - beautifully presented and delicious

Not typical breakfasts you would see and taste at most cafes in Melbourne but the chefs have put them well together. Watching them pumping the foods out with skills is really inspiring. I particular like The French Toast, which is beautifully presented. Their coffee is spot on too, right temperature with good froth. And of course those wait staffs are attentive and friendly. I am impressed with the overall experience there and would recommend you guys to check this cafe out.

It's feel-good food with a feel-good outcome. The space is large and airy, the perfect place to unwind over breakfast, lunch or dinner. I came for breakfast, but it appears they've got a few beers on tap and a bar so I am keen to check out their evening offerings. For breakfast I was torn between their 'Yeusli' (Organic puffed quinoa, chia seeds, activated buckwheat, figs, goji berries, pomegranate seeds, coconut flakes, almonds, currents, raw cinnamon, your choice of milk on the side) and one of their incredible looking smoothies. I opted for the Yeusli and had no regrets. Delicious, super-charged with raw food goodness and a reasonably-sized, filling portion. No overload of oats and yoghurt like most cafe muesli offerings. Normally I don't give 5 stars if the coffee isn't amazing, but I loved the different food offering and concept enough to bump it back up. Coffee is totally fine but the black coffee is not amazing. If you're a latte drinker you probably won't notice at all and there's the bonus of being able to choose different milks if you're not into soy or lactose. The staff were friendly and accommodating, all menu items were well priced and can feed you for $15 or less. Winner.

And I ventured back again the other day when I was in the area and hunger struck. And boy am I glad I did. They have lots of options: sandwiches, wraps, focaccia & a selection of hot food. None of which I have tried because of the incredible range of super tasty salads on offer. And these aren't your boring green tasteless salads. Think falafel, brown rice, roasted sweet potato, Greek, tuna, quinoa, freekah, potato, tabouli, beetroot and more! Choose your size (small or large), to have in (for an extra $1) or take away and then pick which ones you want. They load them into your container and away you go. I've tried many different ones, this last time included 4 types: roast sweet potato, freekah, tabouli & falafel salad - a bit of a middle eastern slant, totally delicious and healthy to boot, getting in a good couple of serves of veggies for lunch! I couldn't finish the whole thing (large takeaway container) so I ate half and saved the rest for alongside dinner that evening. Delish! I've also heard great things about the coffee, but haven't tried it myself. They are only open Monday to Friday, but they open super early (pre 6am) for your pre work coffee. There are a few outdoor tables that are good for a sunny day, but no room inside to sit and eat so you might need to takeaway if the weather ain't great. Friendly & efficient service tops it all off. Highly recommend you check it out if you work in the area or are passing through!

But the one of the biggest lessons I learned was that Australia's coffee game is on a whole. 'nother. level. Regardless of where I went to eat or just chill, the establishment would have a ~$6000 espresso machine ready to go. Aunty Peg's, however, was the only place that I saw espresso machines without steam wands. My cousin, Jeremy, told me that they specialize in coffee in it's purest form, and thus, would never need steam wands (since they're never steaming milk). Jeremy and I are both fond of filter coffee, so we both decided to get a flight of V60s. This was a terrible idea. We didn't realized that that meant we would both have to drink ~800 mL of coffee each. Caffeine doesn't really do anything to me, but Jeremy was starting to get jittery by the end of the flight. If you're coming here with someone else, share the flight. However, if you're getting a flight of espresso, then yeah, it would make perfect sense to have your own. The flight included three different types of coffee each processed a different way. We tried a single origin, a honey processed single origin, and the gesha. I wish they offered the honey processed coffee for purchase, because that one was my favorite. It was so smooth and tasted like mangoes. The gesha reminded me of an Earl Grey tea, which was a weird since it's, you know, coffee. Regardless, all three of the coffees were delicious. The staff at Aunty Peg's was great too. The barista was laser focused while making the drinks. Once he finished making our flight, he was super chill and fun to talk to. I had a great time here. Everything about Aunty Peg's is what I want to see more of in Oklahoma city. I'm especially glad that I bought some coffee to take home. Try the Humbler, it tastes fantastic!

Many months in the making, the rumour mill has been rife with what was going on at their Collingwood site. Finally it is open, presenting itself in the form of a roastery, cafe, shop, warehouse and training centre. From the moment of walking in the front door the warehouse nature of the venue is apparent with large open spaces. Located directly in front of the door is the front counter with a delicious selection of pastries and cakes, freshly baked upstairs. Next to the counter are the large, ornate, dresser-style shop shelves with a vast array of brewing equipment, beans, merchandise and books for sale. The coffee bar is the centrepiece with a sweeping array of custom single group heads, grinders, filter brewing equipment and what appear to be beer taps. But they're not beer taps in the sense that they pour beer. Pioneering a new technique of cold brew coffee, a local Geelong-based brewery has been enlisted to brew coffee in cold water which is then kegged and poured on tap with the help of some nitrogen. Served in a beer glass to complete the experience, it almost similar to Guinness in body. A delicious apple and raspberry tea cake matched surprisingly well. It should also be noted that this is a black coffee-only cafe, there is no milk available. This has been done to better highlight the qualities of the many coffee beans on offer. Next to the bar are a number of benches with demo brewing equipment for prospective customers to try out with an endless supply of beans. The stars of the show, the roasting machines, are visible further back in the warehouse. It is clear that Aunty Peg's is all about bringing quality coffee and its origins and various brewing techniques closer to the general public. A must visit for anyone interested more in coffee or just to taste some good coffee and tasty cakes and pastries. But above all else, visit for the cold brew.
