History
Established in 2006.
Brazil in Chicago was founded in January, 2006 by Marcelo Jarmendia. After teaching languages in Brazil and the United States for over six years, he decided to open in Chicago a school that would not only teach his native language, but also share with Chicagoans his passion for his culture. Thanks to his relations, he was able to build a network of professionals working with all aspects of Brazilian culture, allowing our students to venture into capoeira, samba, music, and Brazilian cuisine.
We are located at 2212 W. Sunnyside Ave, 1st Floor, in Lincoln Square - one of the coolest neighborhoods in Chicago. After four years in business and with over 450 students of 35 nationalities, we have now grown to three classrooms and a study room/library. And Marcelo is no longer alone: Marco, Maristela, Bradley, Ariani and Iris are helping him to spread the language and culture of Brazil (and Portugal!) and in Chicago.
Meet the Business Owner: Marcelo J.
Marcelo is from Sao Paulo, where he lived until his graduation from high-school. He spent the next year in Florida studying English as second language. Back in Brazil, Marcelo was admitted into the University of Sao Paulo where he later majored in Social Sciences, with a focus on Sociology, Anthropology, and Political Science. That same year he started teaching Spanish at a number of businesses in Sao Paulo. Two years later he started teaching Portuguese to Spanish speakers, mostly professionals temporally located in Sao Paulo.
Five years later, still teaching languages but now holding a college degree, Marcelo decided to return to the United States, this time choosing Chicago. Here he has been teaching languages since the third week of his arrival. In addition to his private students, Marcelo has also worked with the Spanish Language Center and the Brazilian Cultural Center prior to starting organizing his own group classes in August of 2006.
