I am a current parent of a 3rd grader and a 5th grader. My kids both started here in kindergarten…read more A couple of years ago we switched my oldest to another school, Skinner West, but we brought her back to Franklin this year. We realized during that two years that there is so much that is truly unique and special about this school, and that the environment here cannot be beat. We just love this school. It had a principal change in 2015, and while that can be scary to parents it has been a wonderful experience. The teachers are caring and collaborative, the education is deep and differentiated, and the administration keeps everything moving safely and strongly. The principal and assistant principal are truly advocates for the teachers and staff, as well as the children and families. This makes the learning environment feel like a natural partnership, with everyone doing their parts in a well-oiled machine. The Friends of Franklin, a fundraising not-for-profit group, raises enough money to pay for kindergarten and early primary grade aides, as well as much needed infrastructure to keep the school competitive in these rapidly changing times. This year's addition of Promethium boards shows how much this small school's parent groups work together to ensure their children's' education is prioritized above all. This school has strong teachers, administrators and families. We truly "won" the CPS lottery when our kids were offered spots here.

The school encourages individual identity within a community, helping each child discover who they are and how they fit into the world around them. They have a fantastic outdoor curriculum including gardening and stewardship of the common areas and excursions into the neighborhood for various projects. Music, art, theatre, martial arts, yoga, and mindfulness are all interspersed with science, math, English, history, and social studies, helping to enhance the idea of interconnectedness through all our experiences. The whole school community is extremely welcoming and encourages regular interaction between parents, administrators, and teachers to make sure everyone is working towards the best outcome for each child. I consider my family incredibly lucky to have found such a supportive and nurturing environment that focuses on long term goals and intends to prepare children to be successful global citizens who can see how and why things work together rather than simply teaching facts. If you have considered or are curious about Montessori schooling, I highly recommend contacting the school for a meeting. It has been an absolute joy watching my son grow.

There is almost no turnover in the preschool faculty, who (quickly) become extended family to your children and you. The elementary/middle faculty are likewise excellent. We chose Akiba because we wanted a secular education that would prepare our kids for any high school, immerse them in a second language from 1st grade (Hebrew), and provide a thorough education in Judaic studies. No easy task, but Akiba excels on all fronts. Kids learn in small, multi-aged groups, and learning is infused with Jewish values. And our modern lunar-themed playground gives students the well-deserved chance to let loose.
