Last night's performance of "Grandiloquent" by GARY GULMAN at the The Grand Opera House was…read moreintelligent, deeply human, and masterfully crafted, the show draws heavily from his book "Misfit"--and brings its spirit to life on stage. Gulman is like a modern-day Scheherazade, spinning stories that hold the audience spellbound. He pulls you in so completely--you're laughing one moment, moved the next, and before you know it, the show has ended and you're left wanting more. His narratives are intricately interwoven with a mix of obscure and familiar references that reward attentive listeners. Gulman manages to be hilarious, self-deprecating, vulnerable, and razor-sharp all at once. Beneath the humor, you always sense his compassion and commitment to social and economic justice. My only reservation was a small but noticeable shift in tone: he used the F-word a handful of times. What makes Gulman so distinctive is that his comedy has always been brilliantly intelligent and genuinely funny - without relying on cursing. It felt slightly out of step with his otherwise clean style. That said, it did little to diminish what was, overall, a truly memorable and deeply affecting evening. Strongly recommend the show! A brief note for the venue itself: it might be worth considering a slightly delayed start--just a few minutes past the stated time--to allow late arrivals to settle, followed by closing the doors once the performance begins. The steady trickle of people finding their seats was distracting not only for the audience but undoubtedly for the performer as well. Additionally, a clear, firm announcement at the outset about refraining from cellphone use would go a long way. During the show, a guest in the front row was scrolling on her phone, and the glow and movement were quite disruptive to those nearby--one can only imagine how noticeable it must be from the stage. Small adjustments like these would help preserve the immersive, attentive atmosphere that a performance of Gulman's caliber truly deserves. Beautiful venue, comfortable seats, great acoustics and ambiance. Very affordable tix. The view from Orchestra, Row D, Seat 6 was OUTSTANDING!

Please upgrade your wine selections -we'll pay.The 'wine' currently on offer is something high school kids would sneak then have a life-long disdain for wine.We love the venue and the parking is good.The patrons can afford better wine-spotlight a few really good mid-priced selections and show patrons where they are available.Money maker? Just saw Mel Brooks "the Producers". First was the dinner. It has been a long time that we were somewhere that our server was also in the play and seemed so genuinely glad we were there. Food was surprisingly good. Served hot and well cooked for all of the offerings. Service was fun every time someone came to the table. Oh by the way there is an excellent bar with a bar tender that certainly has earned his stripes. Now the Show. This has always been one of my favorites, a go to for on demand. Being in this theatre, watching these talented actors made the time go by so fast we wanted more. I found myself leaning in to the dancing and singing and it was spectacular. The sets, the props, the costumes, the lighting, the sound, and being able to just plain enjoy made the night. They have special one night performances as well. These show are such a fantastic value. By the way seating is one of the things I really liked. We were seated with 4 other people that we left as our new friends.

You can look up the menu on their website before you come. Started off with a salad and shrimp cocktail. Then the main meal has several entrees. You can get all of them or tell your waiter what you don't want on your plate if you know you dont like something or to keep it lighter. Follow that with a dessert or 2, coffee and tea. All included. During intermission, they did a 50/50 raffle. The show was good, and the performers all had such good vocals. It must be popular. They told us most upcoming shows are sold out. I would return.

We went to the Darlington Arts Center last night because our daughter was a participant in the…read moreCongressional Art Competition that was held there (it features the work of area high school students). We had only ever been there twice before - once for a children's birthday party and once for an art class. It was a bit crammed last night since a lot of people were there, and the building just isn't really set up to accommodate a whole group at once, but it worked out okay so I won't complain. P.S. My daughter won 2nd place in the Mixed Media category. Proud Momma right here! :)

We had 4 balcony…read moreseats for 4 people. 2 of the patrons are thin and around 5'5", my wife is 5'7" and I am 5'11", but due to no legroom we almost left. Ultimately one of our group found a folding chair, I sat on the steps (others did too) leaving the 4 seats for our wives. They had to sit side saddled due to the lack of legroom. We have seen other shows here without a problem. It is my understanding that these are new seats and they apparently don't fit well. We will not attend future shows.
