Primrose School of Midlothian at Waterford

Primrose School of Midlothian at Waterford

For a pricey preschool this place is severely lacking. We are linked with one of the best teachers…read morewe have ever known. Sadly we catch glimpses of this incredible young lady almost daily falling prey (& thus the stdnts too) to the most toxic mgmt practices we've ever witnessed. If not for this teacher we would absolutely have nothing to do with Primrose Waterford. Teachers are constantly being pulled and moved and the children don't even want to come to school because they never know who will be their teacher. The teacher we deal with we know has been there at least a couple years, and is head and shoulders above every other one we've met or seen and yet seems to always be the one pushed, pulled, and shuffled to the desperate detriment of the kids, but the constant practice has no response from admin. The Primrose newsletter recently said that this most special teacher of all will not be a camp teacher this summer. When the school was asked why, they simply said they didn't know who would be the teachers and that they would pull the information from the newsletter because it must have been confusing. Nope. Nothing confusing about it. As we have come to learn with this place this is standard practice for admin that is regularly not forthcoming with at least some of us parents. We can't speak for anyone else but we know that we find admin and ownership to be highly non-responsive to our concerns. More sadly still, when some parents informed the teacher of the info in the newsletter, she knew nothing about it. Seems admin doesn't even bother telling their teachers where they will be serving--or not serving. We're exhausted by the lack of administrative professionalism at this place, and undoubtedly if we're exhausted by it the teachers must be also--especially the few whose obvious passion is to love and teach the children rather than to engage in damaging inner office politics. Operational integrity is everything to us and administratively we have come to realize that the surface gloss we often see in the administrative scripts, holds no resemblance to the operational practices of the school. Any owner, directors, managers who believe they can regularly treat their employees with such open condescension, disdain, and lack of professionalism, and clearly do so even in front of students and parents and other employees, are severely lacking themselves. Such people should be cautioned not to succumb to their own arrogance that such an embattled atmosphere can do anything other than have an equally negative effect on the children (which is starting to be seen). Miss Wonderful-Teacher is a giant of a person and with out her we KNOW this place would be a dark pit for MANY children--and should this teacher ever leave, then our involvement with this school will end, too. We should have known how dysfunctional this place was when we learned parents were required to agreeing that parents are forbidden from having any contact with the children's teachers outside of school hours, and the teachers' jobs can be forfeited by having contact with parents outside of school. DO NOT BRING YOUR KIDS TO THIS SCHOOL.

Skipwith Academy at Westchester Commons

Skipwith Academy at Westchester should be ashamed of themselves. They are closed for the third day…read morethis week for a snow event that occurred on 1/24-1/25/26. Although the storm resulted in residual affects including icy conditions, more than 98% of the surrounding businesses (including a Pediatric Physician Office, restaurants, Target, Chick Fi La, Panera Bread, a major Gym, Banks, etc.) are open with access to the high traffic of their parking lot and foot areas clear. So, why is Skipwith not open? Although parents seek Day Care Services for various reasons, they primarily choose it because they have to work and the children are either not of school age or need supervision after school or when school is closed because again, they have to work. Operating a Day Care that is more inclined to mimic the local school closure schedule does not serve the parents of the community very well. In addition, discounts to the ever increasing tuition for these numerous day closures are usually not offered. This is very frustrating. Safety FIRST should always be the focus and the goal. I have worked in operations for 32 years so I know what that is like and that it can be difficult to balance at times. However, I would expect Managers and Leadership to be more "Proactive vs Reactive", to think more "out the box" and come up with a better contingency plan for their clients than to simply "close" for multiple days. Would it be too much to consider maybe late openings and early evening closures for a couple of days in a time like this? That way, parents could still meet work obligations (everyone does not have the luxury or ability to work from home) vs missing the day all together. Children would be safe while still learning/having fun and all participants (teachers, parents, children, etc.,) would be able to arrive and depart to their designations safely. I am not trying to down Skipwith Academy or think that the establishment should never close in inclement weather. With Virginia's weather being as Bipolar as it is, there will certainly be times that option is most appropriate. With that said, for the most part, the staff do a good job. My little one enjoys going there and has excelled greatly under their teaching and supervision. However, you have to do better. Your parents are your clients too and if you are closed often, this defeats the purpose of them patronizing your business.

I have absolutely no complaints with this place. this was my sons very first daycare experience as I was a stay at home Mom for over a year so for him to just dive right in and play with the other kids and feel comfortable enough, was a huge sign that he is at the right place. the weekly cost is well worth what you're getting in return!! 10/10

My kids attended preschool here and now my son is back for elementary school! I truly cannot say…read moreenough positive things about this school. Overall it has a very upbeat and positive vibe. The kids are given age appropriate levels of autonomy, which has really helped my son thrive. They get the kids outside as often as possible and utilize their great outdoor space, including a wooded area behind the school. One example of this is my son and his class have marked out small squares of land in the woods as part of a science project and they go out there with some frequency to monitor how the land changes over the seasons. I've heard very cool reports home about this. They also just go out there to be kids and to play! The school is doing a really outstanding job of meeting each kid where they are along their social/emotional/academic learning process. For a small school they also have an impressive availability of resources to scaffold the kids where they need help. As my son is currently in 5th grade, I was thrilled to learn they will be having a 6th grade next year (2023-2024 school year) and plan to open a full 6th - 8th middle school the following year! The teachers are top notch - very engaged in designing an individualized educational experience for each child and are highly communicative and supportive with both the parents and kids. They have gotten my son from hating school to telling us about all the cool things he's learning when he gets home. Truly an amazing place!

The teachers are caring with years of teaching experience. The fact that families send all their children to the program and the lack of teacher turnover speaks to the strength of this program. The small classes and personal attention make this school feel like family. Highly recommend.

The curriculum is excellent and very age appropriate. My son loves to go to school every morning, we cannot get there fast enough. I can see it on the other children's faces as well. With every encounter, we have been beyond impressed with the work they all do. Sarah, the director, is involved with each and every student that walks through the door. She helps and cares about each family that attends their school. The teachers are exceptional. Specifically, Miss Terry and Miss Michele take the time to get to know each student as an individual. They take the time to acknowledge strengths and strengthen opportunities. Our daughter knows all the teachers in the building because they all care about all of the students. It is more than a student/teacher relationship... it is a family. We could not have asked for a better school to introduce our little ones to education. Thank you Mt. Pisgah for all you have done and continue to do.
